Before moving to another Android phone, check that your Pixel’s Google Account backup is current and confirm that photos, contacts, WhatsApp chats, and mobile service are handled separately where needed. If you still have the Pixel, the new phone’s setup transfer is usually the most direct route; if you do not, restore from the cloud backup during setup.
Check the Pixel backup before you start
- On the Pixel, open Settings and find Google services > Backup. Menu names can vary by Android version. Review the backup details, confirm the correct Google Account, and check the last backup status.
- You can also check device backups in Google Drive under Storage > Backups.
- Check Google Photos and Google Contacts separately. Google notes that photos, videos, and contacts may sync through their own services rather than being fully represented by the device backup.

Choose how to move your data

Google’s setup instructions note that steps vary by device. A backup made on a higher Android version cannot be restored to a phone running a lower Android version. Google also documents an after-setup restore path for Pixel 9 and later; that path is limited to one previous device. Prepare both phones for direct transfer
- Charge both devices and connect them to Wi-Fi.
- Make sure you can unlock the old Pixel and sign in to the Google Account used for the backup.
- Back up the Pixel before beginning setup of the new phone.
For a wired transfer, Google’s Pixel instructions describe connecting the phones with a cable. Use a compatible, data-capable cable for both devices; a USB-C cable is only needed for this wired route, not for wireless transfer. Back up and restore WhatsApp separately
- On the Pixel, open WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat backup and create a current backup.
- On the new phone, install or open WhatsApp, use the same phone number, and follow the offered transfer or cloud-restore option.
- Open the chats on the new phone and confirm the conversations you need are present before wiping the Pixel.
Google cautions that a WhatsApp transfer is not guaranteed to succeed. Follow Google’s WhatsApp transfer guidance and treat verification on the destination phone as essential.
Set up your SIM or eSIM independently
Moving personal data does not itself move mobile service. Automatic SIM or eSIM transfer depends on carrier and device support. Google’s stated conditions for the transfer include Android 12 or later, current Google Play services, and a screen lock on both phones. Verify the new phone before erasing the Pixel
Keep the old phone intact until you have checked the destination device. Confirm that the items you rely on have arrived or are accessible, especially:
- Photos and videos in the expected photo service
- Contacts and text messages
- Important app data and sign-ins
- WhatsApp conversations
- Calls, texts, and mobile data through the SIM or eSIM
Some app-specific data, manufacturer features, or service-sync items may not be included in a general Android transfer. Check critical apps and the destination phone’s supported transfer categories before resetting or trading in the Pixel.
