A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Before opening an established Minecraft Java world in a snapshot, make a separate backup of the entire world folder and test only a copy. Minecraft warns that testing versions can corrupt worlds and recommends backing up or using a different folder from your main worlds. Minecraft’s snapshot instructions also show how to install a snapshot through the Launcher’s Installations tab.
Before you start: protect the original world
Snapshots are experimental testing versions, so a world opened in one may be changed or corrupted. Keep three things distinct: your untouched original, a backup you will not open in the snapshot, and the copy you plan to test. Close the world before copying it; this is a prudent way to avoid copying while the game may still be writing save changes.
The instructions below are for Minecraft Java Edition snapshots. Bedrock backup and export steps differ, so do not apply this procedure to a Bedrock world.
Make a separate backup of the whole world
- Close Minecraft or exit the world. Make the copy after the save has settled rather than while it is open.
- Find the backup location. Minecraft Help describes two routes: in Minecraft, choose Singleplayer, select the world, choose Edit, then Open Backups Folder; or open the Minecraft Launcher’s Installations tab, select the relevant installation, open its folder, and open
backups. The exact folders can vary because installations can use different game directories. Minecraft Help’s Java backup guidance provides these navigation routes. - Copy the entire world folder. Keep the copy outside the active saves location or in a clearly labeled separate folder, such as
WorldName - pre-snapshot backup. Do not rely on older instructions that copy only a few familiar files: Java Edition 26.1 moved some world data intodimensions, players, andresourcepackssubfolders. A whole-folder copy avoids omitting data because of those layout changes. Minecraft Java Edition 26.1 release notes describe the changes. - Leave the backup untouched. Do not open the backup in the snapshot. It should remain available as the recovery copy if the test save is damaged.
Use a separate game directory for snapshot testing
A backup protects a point-in-time copy; a separate game directory adds another boundary between snapshot play and your ordinary worlds. Minecraft recommends running testing versions in a different folder from main worlds. In the Launcher, use the Installations tab to create or configure an installation for the snapshot and set its game directory separately where that option is available. Install the snapshot using the Launcher’s Installations controls, then open only the copied world in that environment.

#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Do not assume one universal filesystem path for saves or backups. Launcher installations may use their own game directories, so follow the folder-opening routes for the installation that contains the world rather than copying a path from another computer.
Choose where to keep the backup
| Destination | Separation from the active save | Portability | Convenience |
|---|---|---|---|
| Separate local folder | Separate from the live save if it is outside the active saves location | Remains on the same computer | Quick to access for a local restore |
| External hard drive | Keeps an additional copy away from the active save | Can be moved to another device | Requires connecting the drive when needed |
Minecraft Help identifies an external hard drive as an option for storing or transferring a Java backup; it is not required to make a backup. Minecraft Help does not establish comparative speed, capacity, or reliability for these destinations.

Open the test copy and recover if needed
- Start the snapshot installation with its separate game directory.
- Copy the backed-up world into the test installation’s worlds location, or use the test copy you prepared there. Confirm you are selecting the test copy, not the untouched original or the backup.
- Open the test copy and evaluate the snapshot. Keep the original and backup out of the snapshot.
- If the snapshot changes or damages the test copy, stop using that copy and restore from the separate backup. Preserve the untouched original rather than treating the altered test save as the original.
