The extinct aurochs was the wild ancestor of domestic cattle; the extinct steppe bison was a different bovid and an ancestor of modern plains bison. Modern European bison, or wisent, has a more complicated history that includes ancient ancestry from both lineages. These animals are related, but “aurochs,” “cattle” and “bison” are not interchangeable names.
Which animals does “extinct Ice Age cattle” mean?
The phrase most directly describes the aurochs (Bos primigenius), a wild bovine that lived during the Ice Age and later became extinct. It was the progenitor of domestic cattle (Bos taurus), not merely a larger form of a modern farm cow. The Natural History Museum notes that aurochs lived alongside mammoths, bison and humans, and that they became extinct in Europe in the seventeenth century: Natural History Museum: What was an aurochs?

Another extinct Ice Age bovine often included in comparisons is the steppe bison (Bison priscus). It belongs to the bison lineage, not the cattle lineage. Modern plains bison (Bison bison) descend from steppe bison, according to the U.S. National Park Service: National Park Service: Bison.

How do their lineages compare?
| Animal | Identity and status | Relationship to living animals |
|---|---|---|
| Aurochs (Bos primigenius) | Extinct wild bovine; survived in Europe until the seventeenth century, according to the Natural History Museum. | Progenitor of domestic cattle (Bos taurus). |
| Steppe bison (Bison priscus) | Extinct bison species with an Ice Age range that included Beringia. | Ancestor of modern plains bison (Bison bison), according to the National Park Service. |
| Plains bison (Bison bison) | Living American bison. | Descended from steppe bison; it is not domestic cattle. |
| European bison, or wisent (Bison bonasus) | Living European bison with a distinct history from plains bison and cattle. | Ancient hybrid ancestry links steppe bison and aurochs ancestors; it is not simply a modern form of either. |
| Domestic cattle (Bos taurus) | Living domesticated bovines. | Descended from aurochs, with the details of cattle origins and later ancestry more complex than a single simple lineage. |
Why is the wisent’s ancestry unusual?
A 2016 Nature Communications study concluded that European bison ancestry involved hybridization between steppe bison and aurochs ancestors before 120,000 years ago. The authors reported that wisent genomes can contain up to 10% aurochs genomic ancestry. This finding applies to European bison; it should not be transferred to American plains bison. What do ancient aurochs genomes tell us?
A 2024 Nature study analyzed 38 ancient aurochs genomes and identified four population ancestries: European, Southwest Asian, North Asian and South Asian. This reveals substantial population structure within aurochs, rather than one uniform ancient population. It does not, by itself, settle every question about how domestic cattle originated.
Earlier work also points to a complicated history. A 2006 PNAS study supports some aurochs introgression in Italian cattle while discussing competing domestication scenarios and limits in the available sampling. Read together, these studies support a relationship between wild aurochs and domestic cattle, but caution against reducing cattle history to one uncomplicated event. Were aurochs bigger than modern bison and cattle?
The Natural History Museum describes the aurochs as “the largest terrestrial mammal in Europe after the end of the last Ice Age,” quoting Ice Age mammals expert Dr Tori Herridge of the University of Sheffield. That is a qualitative statement about its place in post-Ice Age Europe, not a standardized measurement comparing aurochs, bison and cattle.

So it is reasonable to say the aurochs was exceptionally large in its European context, but these sources do not support a precise ranking against modern bison or a numerical size comparison with domestic cattle.
