Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallKeep at least two backups in addition to the files on your computer: one on an external drive that you disconnect between backup sessions, and another in a separate location, such as a vetted cloud backup service. That way, a single drive failure, theft, local disaster, accidental deletion, or ransomware incident is less likely to take every copy with it. The setup is a practical use of the 3-2-1 rule—not a guarantee against every kind of loss.
What the 3-2-1 backup rule means
US-CERT describes the 3-2-1 rule as keeping three copies of your data in total: the original plus two backups, on two types of storage, with one copy kept offsite. The point is to avoid depending on a single device or location. It is a rule of thumb, not a promise that data can never be lost. CISA’s device-data guidance also identifies external drives and cloud storage as backup options.

- Three copies: your working files on the computer and two backups.
- Two storage types: for example, a local external drive and cloud storage.
- One offsite copy: a copy stored away from the computer and local drive, such as in a cloud service.
Microsoft Learn repeats this approach in its organizational guidance for protecting against ransomware, describing three copies, two storage types and one offsite or cold copy. That page concerns Azure and organizational recovery planning, rather than recommending a consumer product. Microsoft Learn’s backup and restore plan was last updated July 24, 2026.
A practical setup: computer, disconnected drive and offsite copy
- Keep your working files on the computer. This is the primary copy, not a backup.
- Back up locally to an external hard drive. Use it as a second copy, then disconnect it when the backup is finished and store it safely.
- Keep another copy offsite. A vetted cloud backup or storage service can place a copy outside your home or office. Check how the service handles backup coverage and recovery; do not assume that a folder which merely syncs files is automatically a complete, independent backup.
CISA advises disconnecting an external drive when it is not actively backing up. A connected drive may be reachable by ransomware, which could delete or corrupt its backups. CISA’s guidance on protecting data stored on devices specifically recommends avoiding an always-connected backup drive.

How the options differ
| Option | Where the copy is | Connection and separation | What to consider for recovery | Practical burden |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| External drive | Local, near the computer | Disconnect and store it between backup sessions to reduce exposure to attacks on the computer. | Useful for restoring backed-up files; whether it supports broader system recovery depends on how the backup is configured. | Requires connecting it for backups and storing it safely. |
| Cloud backup or storage | Offsite, in a service provider’s infrastructure | Separate from a local drive, but protection and recovery depend on the service and its settings. | Check what is included, how deleted or changed files are handled, and how restoration works. A sync folder should not be assumed to be a full backup. | Can operate automatically, depending on the service and setup; recovery requires access to the service and its data. |
The cited guidance supports using different media, an offsite copy, disconnected storage and restore testing; it does not establish consumer prices, backup speeds, or how a particular service or drive performs.

Choose a schedule that fits how often files change
Back up often enough that you can tolerate losing the work created since the last successful backup. If important files change daily, a much less frequent backup leaves more recent changes exposed. There is no single schedule that suits everyone; use an automatic schedule where available, and connect a removable drive often enough to keep its copy current.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Test a small restore periodically
A backup is only useful if you can retrieve its contents. Restore a small selection of files to a separate location and check that they open and contain the expected data. CISA’s ransomware guidance recommends checking that backups are available and intact, and keeping offline, encrypted backups. CISA’s ransomware guide covers those precautions.

Protect the copies themselves
- Disconnect the external drive after backup work and store it somewhere safe.
- Use encryption for backups, especially for removable drives or copies that could be lost or stolen.
- Review the cloud service’s backup coverage, retention or version history, and recovery process rather than relying on its sync label alone.
- Keep an offsite copy separate from local hazards such as theft, fire, or damage to the computer and nearby drive.
Common gaps to avoid
- One external drive only: it remains a single point of failure and may be lost, damaged, stolen, or exposed to ransomware if left connected.
- Sync mistaken for backup: synchronization can mirror changes or deletions. Confirm the service’s retention and recovery behavior before treating it as your independent backup copy.
- Never checking restoration: a backup that cannot be opened or restored does not provide dependable recovery.
- Both copies kept together: two devices in the same location may be lost in the same local incident, so keep one copy offsite.
