An event causes a state machine to consider a transition; a guard is a Boolean condition that determines whether a candidate path is enabled. Guards can inspect data carried by the event, values stored in the machine’s context or extended state, or both, depending on the framework. When alternatives compete, their ordering and the outcome when none match are framework-specific—not universal rules of state machines.
How events, states, context, and guards fit together
A state describes the machine’s current mode. An event is an occurrence the machine may handle while in that state. The same event can lead to different behavior in different states because each state can have its own transitions.

A guard is a condition attached to a candidate transition or branch. The machine evaluates it when considering that path: true enables the path, while false disables it. As the Spring Statemachine API puts it, guards enable actions or transitions when they evaluate to true and disable them when they evaluate to false (Spring Statemachine Guard API).

An event may carry parameters, while context—also called extended state in some systems—holds data associated with the running machine. A guard may use one or both. The event remains the trigger; the guard does not create an event or independently cause a transition.

What data can a guard inspect?
Available inputs depend on the framework and the way the machine is modeled. For example, Spring’s guard evaluation receives a StateContext, which exposes information such as the event and extended-state variables (Spring Statemachine reference). QM’s documentation describes choice guards that can use state attributes and parameters associated with the triggering event (Quantum Modeler (QM) choice segments).
- Event parameters: values supplied with the occurrence, such as an amount on a payment event.
- Context or extended state: values maintained by the machine, such as an order total or a retry count.
- Current state: the state determines which transitions are candidates; it is not a substitute for event data or context.
Do not assume every notation or library exposes identical inputs. Confirm what its guard API makes available and when those values are read.

An illustrative example: deciding whether payment is complete
Consider an invented checkout example—not observed behavior from a particular product. The machine is in AwaitingPayment and receives a PaymentReceived event. That event supplies the occurrence and might carry the amount and authorization result. The machine’s context contains the order total.

AwaitingPayment. - A guard checks whether the received amount covers the order total and whether authorization is valid.
- If the condition is true, the enabled path may transition to
ReadyToShip. - If it is false, a separate failure or review path can handle the outcome—if the model defines one.
This separates the roles cleanly: the event says what happened, context supplies relevant machine data, and the guard decides whether that particular path is allowed.

How competing guarded paths are selected
When a model has multiple alternatives, knowing that guards return true or false is not enough to predict which path runs. The framework’s rules for choice points, ordering, and conflicts matter.
QM: choice segments behave like an if/else sequence
QM documents choice segments as alternatives evaluated in sequence, much like an if/else chain. A choice action runs only when its associated guard evaluates true. This makes order and branch conditions part of the model’s behavior. QM also cautions that excessive guard use can make the logic harder to follow (QM choice-segment documentation).

Spring Statemachine: avoid overlapping guards at a choice
Spring’s reference guidance recommends making choice guards non-overlapping so that competing paths do not both qualify. It also describes an unguarded transition as a way to provide a path when guarded alternatives do not apply (Spring Statemachine reference). Treat that advice as Spring-specific guidance, not a universal conflict-resolution rule.

The versioned STK SysML documentation notes that SysML permits certain conflicting transitions and leaves the choice to the execution engine. That is a reminder to distinguish what a notation permits from what a particular engine does (STK 13.1.0 documentation).

There is no single answer that applies to all state-machine implementations. The model may define an explicit fallback, the event may remain unhandled, or the framework may propagate it to an enclosing state.
For example, Quantum Leaps’ QP/C reference manual says a false guard disables the relevant transition path; when guarded paths do not handle an event, the event can propagate to a higher-level state for handling (QP/C reference manual). QM documents corresponding implicit propagation when a choice has no explicit else branch (QM choice-segment documentation). These are documented behaviors of those systems, not a promise about every library or notation.
If the application requires a visible failure, retry, or recovery action, model that outcome explicitly and verify whether the framework consumes, propagates, or leaves unmatched events pending. An unhandled event should not be mistaken for a successful transition.
Designing guards and branches that stay understandable
- Keep the trigger separate from the condition. Name the event for what occurred and express eligibility in the guard.
- Make branch boundaries clear. Prefer readable Boolean conditions over deeply nested guard logic.
- Prevent unintended overlap. If only one outcome should be selected, make conditions mutually exclusive or follow the framework’s documented ordering and conflict rules.
- Specify the no-match case. Decide whether a fallback should handle it, or whether propagation or an unhandled event is intentional.
- Check evaluation timing and inputs. In a choice-based model, a guard may be evaluated when execution reaches the choice point; verify which event parameters and context values are available then.
- Use guards selectively. If branching logic becomes difficult to read, reconsider whether the model needs the guard or whether its states and transitions can express the behavior more clearly.
