How to Back Up a Computer to a UGREEN NAS

Use UGREEN’s desktop client and Sync & Backup to copy selected computer folders to a NAS. Learn the setup steps, recovery limits, and Mac Time Machine alternative.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To back up selected folders from a Windows PC or Mac, use UGREEN’s desktop client and UGOS Pro’s Sync & Backup > Back up & Restore > Add > Backup this computer workflow. Choose the computer folders and a NAS destination, then run the task. Keep the computer awake and the client open while it works. This creates a selected-folder recovery copy, not a complete system image.

Before you start

  • Confirm your NAS model and download its client. On UGREEN’s Download Center, select your exact model to see the available Windows or macOS client and documentation. Model-specific support and downloads can vary.
  • Make sure the NAS has room. The destination needs enough free capacity for the folders you select.
  • Use an account with write access. The account used for the task must be able to write to the chosen NAS folder.
  • Plan for the computer to stay active. Sleep, shutdown, or closing the desktop client interrupts work; the computer and client need to be running for the backup to proceed.

How to back up selected folders from a Windows PC or Mac

  1. Install and open the UGREEN desktop client. Sign in to your NAS. If Sync & Backup is not installed, install it from the UGOS Pro App Center.
  2. Start a computer-backup task. In the app, open Back up & Restore, click Add, and choose Backup this computer.
  3. Select the folders to protect. Choose the specific locations you need, such as Documents, Photos, tax records, or creative projects. This task backs up selected folders; it should not be treated as a full-disk or bare-metal image.
  4. Choose a NAS destination. Select an existing personal or shared folder, or create one. Consider using a separate destination for each computer so the copies are easy to identify.
  5. Choose when the task runs. UGREEN describes real-time and manual task policies. With a manual policy, you must remember to run the task yourself.
  6. Review the settings and run it. Check the selected paths, destination, filters, policy, and task name. Keep the computer awake and the desktop client open during the initial run, then check the task status to confirm it completed.
  7. Validate recovery. UGREEN recommends restoring test files and opening them to verify they work. A backup is more useful when you have confirmed that its files can be recovered.

Backup this computer or Sync this computer?

Choose based on whether you want a recovery copy or folders that stay aligned. UGREEN’s computer-backup workflow leaves a file at the NAS destination if you delete the original on the computer. It does not provide a version list for rolling back an overwritten file, so do not assume it can recover earlier versions of changed files.

Sync is intended to keep active folders current between the computer and NAS. In two-way sync, a deletion on either side can propagate to the other, so sync is not a substitute for an independent recovery copy. UGREEN explains sync behavior in its computer and NAS sync guide.

Workflow Purpose What happens to deletions? Overwritten-file history Computer and client need to be running?
Backup this computer Keep a one-way copy of selected computer folders on the NAS. A source-deleted file remains at the destination. No version list for rollback is provided by this workflow. Yes, for the backup to proceed.
Computer sync Keep selected active folders aligned between computer and NAS. Two-way sync can propagate a deletion from either side. Not stated in UGREEN’s cited sync description. Not stated in UGREEN’s cited sync description.

Mac alternative: use Time Machine for backup history

If you want Mac Time Machine’s backup history, rather than only a selected-folder copy, UGREEN documents a separate Time Machine-over-SMB setup. Its guide, published November 27, 2024, states support for UGOS Pro firmware 1.9.0.0035 or later and macOS Monterey 12 or later. Check current compatibility and interface labels before setting it up, since software support can change.

  1. Enable SMB and Bonjour in UGOS Pro.
  2. Designate a shared folder on the NAS for Time Machine.
  3. Choose the NAS destination in macOS Time Machine settings.

Time Machine encryption encrypts the network backup before it is stored on the NAS. Preserve the encryption password securely: UGREEN warns that losing it can make the backup unrecoverable. See UGREEN’s Mac and Time Machine setup guide for its configuration details.

How long will the first backup take?

UGREEN’s 2025 guide gives roughly 110 MB/s on 1GbE under favorable conditions as a practical estimate, not a guaranteed or independently measured speed. Wi-Fi, many small files, computer sleep, and other network activity can affect transfer time. Leave enough time for the initial run and check its status rather than relying on the estimate.

A NAS backup still needs another copy

A computer-to-NAS backup protects against problems with the original computer, but it does not protect the NAS copy from NAS failure or other loss affecting that device. UGREEN recommends keeping another copy on an external drive, in cloud storage, or on a second NAS. Its external-drive backup guide describes a NAS-to-drive workflow; UGREEN says that backup is packaged and restored through UGOS Pro, so do not assume it is an ordinary folder that any computer can open.
