OpenAI and Anthropic both sell AI through consumer products, business subscriptions and developer platforms, but their public business narratives differ. OpenAI explicitly describes a mix of subscriptions, advertising and commerce-supported free access, and usage-based APIs. Anthropic’s public growth story puts more emphasis on enterprise customers, developers, Claude Code and Claude for Work. Neither is simply a chatbot company, and the available company-reported financial figures are not a clean, independently audited comparison.

For a buyer, the useful comparison is practical: which products fit the work, connect to the right systems, meet governance needs and cost less at the expected usage level?

What do OpenAI and Anthropic sell?

Each company has consumer-facing AI, business offerings and a platform for developers. The product names and surfaces overlap, but the products are not interchangeable: a chat subscription, an enterprise workspace and an API deployment serve different needs.

Product surface OpenAI Anthropic
Consumer AI ChatGPT, with free access and paid subscriptions. Claude, with consumer plans.
Workplace products Business subscriptions, including team and enterprise offerings. Claude for Work, including Team and Enterprise, with Claude Chat, Claude Code and Cowork included in Enterprise, according to Anthropic.
Developer access OpenAI API for text, image, voice, code and agent workflows. OpenAI describes the Responses API and Agents SDK, with tools such as web search, file search and remote MCP servers. OpenAI API Platform Claude Platform/API, as well as Claude Code. Anthropic describes access through its platform and cloud providers. Claude Enterprise
Business integrations and controls OpenAI describes connections between agents and business systems, plus enterprise controls including data and privacy options, SSO/MFA, role-based access, usage and billing controls, and encryption. Anthropic describes workplace connectors and enterprise deployment options. It says Enterprise prompts, data and results are not used to train its models by default.

These feature descriptions come from the vendors, not an independent evaluation of quality or security. A feature list does not establish whether a particular integration, control or model will satisfy a buyer’s requirements.

How do Claude and ChatGPT make money?

OpenAI: subscriptions, ads and commerce, and API usage

OpenAI says it began with subscriptions and now uses a multi-tier model: consumer and team subscriptions, a free tier supported by advertising and commerce, and APIs billed according to use. The company frames its strategy as investing in compute and model capability, expanding adoption and revenue, then reinvesting. Its stated principle is that “our business model should scale with the value intelligence delivers.” OpenAI’s business-model statement

Anthropic: subscriptions, enterprise adoption and developer use

Anthropic’s public account of growth emphasizes enterprise and developer adoption. Its Series G announcement names Claude API, Claude Code and Claude for Work as entry points that can expand across organizations. That describes the company’s stated growth strategy; it does not mean subscriptions or consumer use are absent. Anthropic’s Series G announcement

What do the companies’ reported revenue figures show?

The figures below provide scale, but they should not be read as a ranking. OpenAI reported annual recurring revenue (ARR) for particular years; Anthropic reported run-rate revenue in a 2026 funding announcement. These are different measures and disclosures from private companies, not audited side-by-side financial statements.

ARR and run-rate revenue should not be converted into recognized revenue or treated as equivalent without matching definitions, periods and accounting details. The Associated Press has noted that these private companies do not publicly disclose sales in the way a public-company filing would; the figures above are what each company chose to report, not a complete comparable financial picture. How do Claude and ChatGPT pricing models compare?

Consumer and workplace subscriptions generally charge by plan or seat; APIs charge according to use. Those structures make headline prices poor proxies for total cost: compare the plan limits, model, input and output volume, caching, tool calls, overages and contract terms for the workload you expect.

Deployment can also affect procurement: Anthropic says Claude Platform/API is available through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI and Microsoft Azure. How should a business choose between Anthropic and OpenAI?

Use the same representative tasks, data and acceptance criteria to compare both vendors. A small pilot is more informative than assuming a winner from marketing claims or a general benchmark.

  1. Define the work. Select realistic tasks such as coding, writing, analysis, multimodal input or agent execution. Decide what counts as a correct, useful and safe result before testing.
  2. Test the workflow. Confirm which tools and data sources each product can reach, what actions an agent can take, and where human review is required.
  3. Estimate full usage cost. For subscriptions, check limits and seat types. For APIs, model the expected input and output volume, model choice, caching, tools and any overage or contract terms.
  4. Validate governance. Compare data handling, retention, training defaults, identity and role controls, auditability, and the compliance terms your organization actually requires.
  5. Choose the deployment and procurement route. Compare direct purchase, API access and cloud marketplace options against regional requirements, support needs and existing cloud commitments.

OpenAI Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser described the company’s enterprise ambition as “building the best enterprise platform for all industries, all segments,” while Anthropic CFO Krishna Rao said its funding would support “enterprise-grade products and models” customers depend on. Those statements explain each company’s positioning; they do not replace a task-level evaluation. Associated Press · Anthropic Series G announcement
