To stop future Droplet compute charges, destroy a Droplet you no longer need; powering it off is not enough. A powered-off Droplet still bills because its resources remain reserved. To find charges already on an invoice, inspect the invoice CSV and check for surviving Droplets, excess outbound transfer, unassigned Reserved IPs, and other resources such as those created by Kubernetes autoscaling.
First, know what stops Droplet charges
For bundled CPU Droplets, billing starts when the Droplet is created and ends when it is destroyed. Turning it off does not stop compute billing. DigitalOcean’s cited GPU rules likewise say powered-off GPU Droplets continue to bill. Check the current Droplet pricing documentation for the rules that apply to your Droplet type.

Use the distinction this way: power off a machine you plan to keep; destroy one you no longer need. Before destruction, review its associated storage and backups, because those resources may remain and can have separate charges.

Set spend alerts before investigating a bill
In the DigitalOcean Control Panel, open Billing and configure spend alerts against a monthly budget. Set more than one percentage threshold if you want earlier warnings as usage grows. DigitalOcean says alert emails arrive within an hour after actual usage crosses a configured threshold. A budget is not a spending cap: alerts do not stop resource creation or prevent charges.
#1 Best Overall
- Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Bandwidth projections are a special case. A projected overage does not trigger a spend alert until it is applied to an invoice, so alerts should not be your only way to watch transfer usage. See DigitalOcean’s spend-alert documentation for current setup details.
Check transfer usage and the invoice line items
- Review the team Billing page. Check its transfer overview and compare daily usage with the available projections. Included transfer allowances pool across the team’s Droplets, so a single Droplet’s usage is not necessarily the whole picture.
- Download the invoice CSV. Find the billed product or resource line, then compare it with the resources currently in the account. DigitalOcean’s invoice troubleshooting guidance identifies powered-down Droplets, bandwidth overages, unassigned Reserved IPs, and Kubernetes autoscaling resources as possible sources of charges.
- Check outbound transfer. Inbound Droplet transfer is free. Each Droplet plan includes an outbound transfer allowance, pooled at team level; additional outbound transfer is listed at $0.01 per GiB in DigitalOcean’s pricing documentation, last verified 25 August 2026. Compare that figure with the current pricing page before making a cost estimate.
The transfer rate is not a monthly cap: usage above the pooled allowance can add charges. The team Billing page’s daily usage and projections can help you spot a trend, but a projected overage does not generate a spend alert until it appears on an invoice.

Look for unassigned Reserved IPs
DigitalOcean says Reserved IPs are free while assigned to a Droplet. Its Reserved IP pricing page lists unassigned IPv4 at $5 per month ($0.01 per hour), with billing only after at least $1 accrues per address; unassigned IPv6 is free. Those figures were last verified on 25 June 2025, so confirm the current rate and rules on the Reserved IP pricing page before relying on them.
If an IPv4 address is no longer needed, review whether anything depends on it, then remove or assign it as appropriate. Destroying a Droplet does not necessarily remove other account resources, so check the IP list separately.

Destroy unused Droplets without deleting data you need
- Identify the Droplet. Match the resource in the invoice CSV to the Droplet in your account, including any powered-off Droplets that you assumed had stopped billing.
- Decide what to retain. Before destroying it, check whether you need its snapshots, volumes, or volume snapshots. These associated resources are not destroyed by default when the Droplet is destroyed and may remain independently billable.
- Destroy only the resources you intend to remove. Follow the current steps in DigitalOcean’s Droplet destruction guide. Read the confirmation details rather than assuming attached resources will be removed with the Droplet.
- Recheck the account. Look for retained storage, snapshots, unassigned IPs, or other resources that remain after deletion. Automated Droplet backups remain for four weeks after creation and then expire, according to documentation last verified 13 July 2026; do not treat that retention as a substitute for checking the resources listed in your account.
Use Monitoring to understand activity, not to cap your bill
DigitalOcean Monitoring is free and opt-in. Installing the metrics agent sends Droplet metrics to the Control Panel, where graphs and resource alerts can help you investigate unusual activity or trends. Supported alert categories include CPU, memory, disk, load, disk I/O, and public or private bandwidth. See the Monitoring pricing page, Droplet metrics documentation, and resource-alert instructions for details.
Monitoring and spend alerts answer different questions. Resource alerts watch configured Droplet metrics; spend alerts notify you when actual bill usage crosses budget percentages. Neither prevents billable resources from being created or limits a bill.
