These are practical hazards, not a ranked list: manufacturer guidance does not quantify how much any one habit shortens a drive’s life, and a drive can still fail despite careful use. Follow the instructions for your exact model.
1. Dropping, jolting, or moving a drive while it is running
Impact can damage a drive or cause read/write errors, but one bump does not guarantee failure. Western Digital advises against handling or moving supported desktop drives while they are powered on and recommends minimizing shaking during transport. A Samsung external-drive manual also warns that impact may lead to bad sectors and read/write errors.

Set a desktop drive on a stable surface before connecting it, and leave it there until it is no longer in use. When carrying any drive, secure it so it cannot slide around or collide with other objects. A padded case can help protect a portable drive in transit, but it is not a guarantee against damage.

2. Heat and blocked airflow
Heat can be a concern when a drive is enclosed, placed near a heat source, or used with its vents obstructed. For the desktop models covered by its guidance, Western Digital recommends a well-ventilated location with at least one inch of clearance and unobstructed airflow.
Western Digital lists an operating range of 5°C to 35°C for the external 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch drive categories shown in its temperature guidance. Those are model-family figures, not a universal limit for every external drive. Check your specific drive’s data sheet or manual for its operating conditions.

3. Moisture and unsuitable storage
Keep a drive away from damp locations and protect it from water. Western Digital warns that water, high humidity, and high salinity can damage drives in storage, and recommends a cool, dry place. Seagate likewise advises avoiding damp areas, while a Samsung manual warns that prolonged moisture exposure can corrode components.
The cited manufacturer guidance does not establish one humidity threshold that applies to all external drives. Use the storage conditions in the documentation for your model, and do not assume a drive is protected from moisture just because it is unplugged.

4. Disconnecting while the computer may still be using it
Unplugging a drive during a transfer or other activity risks data corruption and file-system damage. Western Digital also documents that unsafe removal can leave a drive in a read-only condition. This is a data-integrity risk; the cited guidance does not establish that every unsafe disconnection physically shortens a drive’s life.
Safely remove a drive in Windows
- Wait for file transfers and applications using the drive to finish.
- Use Windows’ “Safely Remove Hardware” option for the drive, then disconnect it when the system indicates it is safe.
Eject a drive in macOS
- Wait for file transfers and applications using the drive to finish.
- Eject the drive in Finder, or use the eject control beside it, and disconnect it after it disappears from Finder.
For operating-system-specific instructions, see Western Digital’s safe-ejection guidance and Seagate’s instructions for safely removing an external drive.

5. Incorrect power or strain on cables and connectors
For a drive that uses a power adapter, follow the manufacturer’s power requirements. Seagate advises using the included supply or one with the same specifications. Western Digital recommends a surge protector for external drives that use a power adapter; that advice does not apply in the same way to every bus-powered portable drive.

Quick Recap
Best Value
- SATA DRIVES ONLY — 2.5in & 3.5in: Works with SATA I/II/III hard drives and SSDs. Does NOT support IDE/PATA, M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, SAS, or drives already in a USB enclosure. Check your drive's connector before ordering — a bare SATA drive has a wide flat L-shaped edge connector, not a ribbon cable or a small M.2 gold-finger card.
- USB TYPE-A HOST CABLE — NOT A USB-C PORT: The included host cable ends in USB Type-A and plugs into a USB 3.0 Type-A port. If your computer has only USB-C ports, you will need a USB-C to USB-A adapter, which is not included. For stable operation plug directly into the computer — USB hubs and USB 2.0 ports may cause intermittent disconnections.
- REAL-WORLD SPEED, NOT INTERFACE MATH: USB 3.0 with UASP support (UASP-capable host required). Typical mechanical HDD transfer speeds are 100-160 MB/s, which is the drive's own limit, not the port's; SSD speeds vary up to the USB interface maximum. Backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.
- 12V POWER ADAPTER INCLUDED — REQUIRED FOR 3.5in DRIVES: A 12V/2A AC power adapter is in the box and a wall outlet is needed. 3.5in HDDs cannot run on USB power alone — without the adapter the drive will fail to spin up or drop out during use. 2.5in drives are generally bus-powered, but the adapter is recommended for stability.
- PLUG AND PLAY, TOOL-FREE, HOT-SWAP: No drivers on Windows 10/11, macOS, or Linux. Lay-flat bay accepts a bare drive without tools, swaps without rebooting, and an LED shows power and activity. Note: S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics are not passed through the USB bridge, and on macOS a drive may need remounting after sleep. Drive not included.
How to make an external drive last longer
- Keep important files backed up in separate locations. Western Digital advises keeping backups in at least two separate places, and Seagate also recommends backing up important data. Careful handling cannot prevent every failure.
- Keep a powered desktop drive stationary, and secure drives during storage and transport.
- Give desktop units the clearance and airflow their documentation requires.
- Store drives in a cool, dry place within the conditions specified for that model.
- Wait for activity to finish and safely eject before disconnecting.
- Use the specified power supply and avoid straining cables or connectors.
