Track service health, output quality, and user or business outcomes; compare them with meaningful baselines; and make sure alerts lead to investigation and action. Production monitoring matters because real-world inputs and operating conditions can differ from controlled pre-deployment tests.
What AI system monitoring should cover
A useful monitoring plan connects technical signals to the system’s intended use. Availability and latency can show whether a service is responding, but not whether its answers remain useful or safe. Likewise, a quality score alone will not reveal a failing dependency, an overloaded GPU, or an operational incident.

- Service health: availability, successful request rate, errors, latency (including percentile latency when relevant), request volume, throughput, and performance against service-level objectives (SLOs).
- Capacity and efficiency: CPU, GPU or other accelerator use; memory; network and storage pressure; scaling behavior; throughput; and infrastructure or model API cost. Tie each measure to a capacity limit, user outcome, or operating budget.
- Model and application quality: task success or accuracy, relevance, factual-error or hallucination indicators where measurable, harmful-output measures, and failures in retrieval or tool use.
- User and business outcomes: feedback, task completion or resolution, productivity, cost savings, revenue, or automation efficiency when relevant and responsibly measurable. A proxy metric is not proof of impact.
- Risk and incident response: relevant incidents, escalation ownership, detection and response times, and whether the response restored service and addressed the cause.

1. Map the system and its intended use
Document the components, users, operating environment, limitations, and plausible harms. Include the paths through the application—such as retrieval, external tools, and model APIs—because an issue in one component can affect downstream behavior. The NIST AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF) is voluntary guidance organized around Govern, Map, Measure, and Manage; NIST says the framework is being revised: NIST AI Risk Management Framework.
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
2. Set baselines and user-centered goals
Record relevant pre-deployment results and define production goals around the experience or outcome users need. Controlled tests are useful reference points, not a guarantee of production behavior. Choose targets for the service and use case rather than copying illustrative SLO examples as universal benchmarks. NIST’s AI RMF Playbook says in Measure 2.4: “The functionality and behavior of the AI system and its components – as identified in the MAP function – are monitored when in production.” NIST AI RMF Playbook: Measure
3. Instrument every layer
Collect operational telemetry alongside application and model indicators. Depending on the workflow, useful signals can include model-specific errors, input and output token counts, retrieval quality, grounding, and feedback. For retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), evaluate whether retrieved context is relevant and whether the response is supported by that context.

Preserve enough version and request context to connect an output to the model, prompt, knowledge source, and service path that produced it. Apply privacy, access-control, and data-retention requirements when collecting or retaining that context.

4. Compare observations and investigate changes
Compare production measures with baselines and watch for meaningful changes in inputs, operating environment, service performance, or outcome quality. “Drift” is a useful umbrella term, but a change in the data distribution is not automatically evidence that the model has degraded. Investigate where the change occurred and whether it affected the intended outcome. Consider how upstream changes can propagate through the system or create feedback loops.

- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
5. Make alerts actionable
Set thresholds or detection rules for conditions that warrant attention, route alerts to a named owner, and connect them to a runbook or decision path. Monitoring without a response process can identify a problem without helping anyone resolve it. NIST recommends assessing response times and response quality; its 2026 report also describes challenges in combining automated monitoring with human validation. NIST: Challenges to the monitoring of deployed AI systems
6. Review the monitoring loop
Check whether alerts identify real issues, whether responses are timely and effective, and whether the metrics still reflect the system’s risks and user outcomes. Revisit the plan when the environment, system, or use changes. There is no universally correct monitoring cadence or metric set established by the cited guidance; choose and document an approach based on risk, rate of change, and the ability to detect and respond.

How to detect and interpret model drift
Use production monitoring to notice changes, then distinguish their causes before deciding on a remedy. A shift in incoming data, a change to an upstream service, degraded infrastructure, and poorer task outcomes are different problems, even if they appear together.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Compare input and operating conditions with the baseline, using measures appropriate to the system and its data.
- Check service health and dependencies to determine whether errors, latency, or capacity pressure explain the change.
- Evaluate task quality and relevant user outcomes to see whether the change is materially affecting results.
- Trace the affected model, prompt, knowledge source, and service path where permitted, then investigate upstream changes and possible feedback loops.
- Use human review when automated quality or safety scores are imperfect proxies and the consequences of a missed problem are material.
A change in a drift indicator is a signal to investigate, not by itself a verdict that the model has failed. Monitoring cadence and methods should fit the risk and the system’s rate of change; NIST identifies these as areas where open questions remain.

Choosing a monitoring approach
A cloud-native service, a specialist observability platform, or custom instrumentation can each be suitable. Compare approaches against the whole workflow rather than a single dashboard feature.
- Coverage: Does it span infrastructure, application traces, model behavior, and user outcomes?
- Operations: Can the team define and evaluate SLOs, configure alerts, and manage response workflows?
- Traceability: Can an output be connected to model, prompt, data, retrieval, and service versions?
- Integration: Does it fit existing telemetry, identity, and incident-management systems?
- Governance: Can it meet privacy, access-control, retention, and oversight needs?
- Total operating effort: Account for telemetry volume, evaluation workload, infrastructure or service cost, and staff time.
- Fit: Match the approach to the team’s risk level, deployment scale, and ability to validate automated evaluation signals.
The cited cloud guidance provides operational examples, not independent comparative product testing. Validate that an approach works for the system’s requirements before relying on its automated signals.
What the evidence supports—and what it does not
NIST’s report, published March 6, 2026, describes categories, barriers, gaps, and open questions in monitoring deployed AI systems. Its summary emphasizes validating real-world operation, tracking unforeseen outputs, and providing visibility into unexpected consequences. The NIST AI RMF and Playbook provide a voluntary risk-management foundation, while AWS and Google Cloud offer practical operational examples.

The cited sources do not establish a universal reliability or efficiency gain from monitoring, nor one correct set of metrics or review schedule. Treat example SLO values as illustrations, not observed results or recommendations for every service. Automated quality and safety scores can also be imperfect proxies, so use human review and incident processes where the stakes warrant them.
