The risks and cleaning methods vary by model, so use the care instructions for your exact headphones or earbuds. The eight points below are practical hazards, not a scientifically ranked or exhaustive list.
1. Leaving sweat or rain on your headphones
Sweat and rain can affect surfaces, metal parts, microphones, ports, and charging contacts. Sony warns that on the WH-1000XM6, moisture left on the headphones can rust metal parts and deteriorate or mold the earpads. Its broader care guidance also warns that sweat or raindrops left on metal parts can cause corrosion and surface deterioration. Sony’s WH-1000XM6 care guidance and general headphone maintenance tips describe these risks.

After a workout or exposure to rain, wipe the headphones using the method approved for that model, then let them dry thoroughly at room temperature before storing them. Water resistance does not mean a wet device is safe to charge.

Moisture around charging contacts or inside a port can cause malfunction. Sony advises checking the headphones, charging case, USB port, and cable for moisture or dirt, then letting wet parts dry completely at room temperature before charging. It says this warning applies even to waterproof or moisture-proof models. Sony’s charging guidance explains the precaution; Sony UK’s headphone care guidance also warns that charging with sweat or other moisture present can cause malfunction.

Inspect the charging area before connecting power. If anything is damp, disconnect it and wait until it is fully dry. Don’t assume a water-resistance rating makes charging while wet safe, or apply a universal charger rule: electrical requirements depend on the model.
3. Cleaning with the wrong product or tool
A cleaner that works on one headphone surface may damage another. Sony warns against solvents such as alcohol, thinner, and benzene on the cited products. Apple likewise advises against aerosol sprays, solvents, and abrasives on Beats, and gives different cleaning directions for ear cups, mesh, and cushions. Sony’s model-specific instructions, Sony UK’s guidance, and Apple’s Beats cleaning guidance illustrate why there is no universal cleaner.

Check the manual for your exact model and component. Use a soft cloth only if the manufacturer recommends it, and avoid abrasive tools or indiscriminate alcohol wipes.
4. Letting oils and debris build up on pads or tips
Skin oils, sweat, and debris can wear removable parts or interfere with their fit. Sony says prolonged contact with sweat, hair oil, or sebum can contribute to earpad cracking or peeling, and recommends regular gentle cleaning. Audio-Technica says buildup around eartip attachment areas can allow tips to detach; its ATH-TWX7 guide also warns that moisture left on charging contacts can cause corrosion. These are manufacturer care observations, not failure rates for every product or material. See Sony’s maintenance tips and Audio-Technica’s ATH-TWX7 cleaning guidance.

5. Storing headphones in direct sun or extreme temperatures
Heat can be a concern for products containing batteries, while direct sunlight and extreme heat or cold can harm some headphones. Apple advises keeping Beats away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures; Bose safety material warns against excessive heat for products with batteries. Neither source establishes one safe storage temperature for every headphone model. See Apple’s Beats care guidance and Bose’s safety instructions.

6. Pulling the cable instead of the plug
Repeated strain at the cable or connector is avoidable. Apple’s instruction for Beats is direct: “Never pull on the cable itself.” Apple’s care guidance advises grasping the plug to disconnect it. Hold the plug housing when unplugging, rather than yanking the cord.

7. Leaving headphones loose where they can be crushed or knocked
Loose storage exposes headphones to dust, scratches, and accidental impact. Sony recommends using a case or protective bag to help protect ear cups, the headband, and cable. Sony’s maintenance tips support that precaution, but do not establish a universal case standard or comparative drop-test results.
Choose a case that fits the exact model, close it before placing it in a bag, and avoid putting heavy objects on top. A case helps with everyday exposure; it is not a guarantee against damage.
8. Treating loud listening as a hardware-damage issue
High volume is a hearing-safety concern, not a proven way to ruin headphone hardware. Bose advises: “To avoid hearing damage, do not use your headphones at a high volume.” Bose’s safety instructions support keeping playback at a level that does not risk your hearing. The cited guidance does not establish a numeric listening threshold or show that loud playback physically damages the headphones.
