To avoid scams when buying a used PS5 Pro, verify the actual console—not just the seller’s claims—before paying: inspect its serial number and seals, test it online, confirm what is included, and use a payment method and marketplace process that give you a dispute route. A PS5 Pro that powers on can still be damaged or unable to use PlayStation services.
Before you contact the seller
Evaluate the listing and seller
Compare the listing’s photos, stated condition, included items, seller history, and return terms. Be cautious if it relies only on stock images, gives vague answers, or is priced implausibly low without a credible explanation. Ask questions in writing and save the answers. The US Federal Trade Commission recommends researching the seller, marketplace, and item before buying: FTC online-shopping guidance.

Check the marketplace’s current rules for this exact kind of sale. Confirm who handles complaints, whether the protection applies to this seller and item, what evidence is required, and how long you have to open a claim. Policies vary and can change; do not assume a private sale has the same coverage as a purchase from a business.
Request evidence of the actual console
Ask for a recent video of the listed unit powering on, showing its ports and buttons, connecting to the internet, and displaying a picture on a screen. If a Disc Drive is part of the deal, ask to see it working too. PlayStation’s buying guide advises: “Ask them to show the product powering on and connecting to the internet (if relevant).” You can ask the seller to include a one-time detail, such as the date or a phrase you provide, in the video; that is a practical way to link the footage to the listing, not an official Sony requirement.

Ask for the model information, a clear list of accessories, and an original receipt if available. Request the serial number privately or inspect it in person rather than asking the seller to post it publicly. Do not share a full serial number unnecessarily.
Protect the payment
Read the platform’s payment and buyer-protection terms before agreeing to a deal. Keep messages and payment on the marketplace when leaving it would void or weaken protection. Prefer a payment method with a dispute process, and check that method’s terms. The FTC warns that gift cards, cryptocurrency, and wire transfers are difficult to recover; do not send their codes or funds to an unknown seller. Avoid pressure to pay through an unprotected route.

Inspect and test the console before paying
Check the hardware and serial number
Whenever possible, inspect the console in person. Compare it with the listing and check for cracks, missing covers, impact or liquid damage, suspicious modifications, and damaged seals. Make sure the serial number is present and has not been altered or defaced. PlayStation’s US buying guide recommends checking the product’s condition, seals, and serial number. A missing or damaged serial number is a strong reason to walk away.

Test operation, image, and online access
Connect the console to a display and check the image, buttons, and ports. Listen for unusual fan noise and watch for overheating or unexpected shutdowns during a reasonable test. Video footage cannot reveal every problem; PlayStation recommends an in-person inspection where possible.

Connect the console to the internet and verify that it can access PlayStation services. Powering on is not proof that a console is in good condition or free of service restrictions: Sony says a PlayStation product reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from PlayStation services. Ask the seller to deactivate the console and confirm they no longer have access. Verify the setup and service access yourself where possible rather than relying only on an assurance.
Confirm exactly what the bundle includes
The PS5 Pro is a 2 TB all-digital console; it does not include a built-in disc drive. PlayStation offers a compatible removable Disc Drive separately, and an internet connection is required to pair it during setup. If physical discs matter to you, confirm whether the drive is included and test it. A digital-only console is not a defect unless the listing promised a drive or you need one.

Check the listing against the actual bundle, including the controller, cables, stand feet, and any optional Disc Drive. Model details and availability can vary by region, so check the exact listing and current manufacturer compatibility information.
Keep a record of the sale
Get a receipt or written sale record that identifies the item, price, date, and seller. Save the listing, messages, payment confirmation, and any test video. For an online purchase, note the return and dispute deadlines as soon as you buy.

Know what warranty and return protection actually apply
PlayStation’s US buying guide says, “Third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by warranty*.” The asterisk distinguishes certified-refurbished PlayStation products, which the guide says do include warranty. These are separate categories: do not assume an ordinary used console is certified refurbished.
Sony’s cited PS5 warranty for the US and Canada is for the original purchaser, lasts one year from the original purchase date, and requires valid proof of purchase for warranty service. It excludes products sold and clearly marked “AS IS” or with faults. These terms do not establish that an original warranty transfers to a later buyer. Check the exact regional policy, receipt, and seller’s return terms before relying on any coverage. Outside the US and Canada, check your local warranty and consumer-protection rules.
A seller’s return promise and a manufacturer warranty are not the same thing. Read the actual platform and seller terms, including who processes a refund and the deadline for reporting a problem. If paperwork is missing, that alone does not prove fraud, but it can reduce your options if something goes wrong.

- The seller insists on moving payment off-platform even though they claim marketplace protection applies.
- The seller refuses a current test video, reasonable inspection, proof of possession, or clear answers about condition and returns.
- The serial number is removed or damaged, seals appear broken without a credible explanation, or the console cannot connect to PlayStation services.
- The seller rushes you, demands gift cards, cryptocurrency, or a wire transfer, or offers an implausibly low price without a credible reason.
- The seller cannot explain what is included, where the console came from, or why a receipt or warranty information is unavailable.
No single missing document proves a scam, but several unanswered questions or blocked checks add up to an avoidable risk. There is no established fair-price threshold here; value depends on date, region, condition, bundle, seller, and return protection. Compare the verified condition and total cost—not just the asking price—with other used or certified-refurbished options.
Quick Recap
If you suspect a scam or the console is misrepresented
- Contact the seller promptly and describe the problem in writing.
- Open a case with the marketplace before its deadline. Keep the listing, messages, receipt, tracking details, and video.
- If you paid by card, contact the issuer and ask about disputing the transaction under its rules.
- In the US, report suspected fraud at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and contact your state attorney general. Elsewhere, use your local consumer agency and payment provider.
