Decide what counts as a spoiler for you
Before changing settings, set your boundary. You might only want to avoid major plot twists, or you may also consider character names, locations, party members, bosses, late-game mechanics, leaked footage, and datamined material spoilers. The wider your boundary, the more game-related content you will need to avoid.

Where a service lets you mute or hide words, add the game’s full title, abbreviations, alternate spellings, known character names, and terms commonly used for leaks. Revisit the list as official marketing reveals new names. Word filters depend on the terms you enter, and they may not catch images, misspellings, or untagged posts; community advice supports muting terms generally, but does not establish how every service handles them.
Choose how much access you want to trade for protection

These are practical choices, not tested protection levels. There is no established statistic here for the chance of encountering a pre-release RPG spoiler on current social media, and no approach guarantees protection across the internet.

Reduce exposure in feeds and communities
If you want a buffer, mute or leave the game’s subreddit, forum, Discord channels, hashtags, and creator communities before launch. Turning off related notifications can reduce prompts that lead back into those spaces. Avoid searching for the game if you are trying to keep it out of your recommendations: community users suggest that searches can lead to more game-related exposure, but this is anecdotal advice, not a promise about how recommendation systems work.
Leaving spaces is a user strategy, not a platform filter. It can reduce what appears in your usual feed, but it cannot prevent a friend’s post, a trending topic, or an unrelated account from surfacing spoiler material.

Can Reddit hide spoilers?
Reddit’s spoiler tag is helpful when a post is tagged correctly. Reddit Help, updated October 21, 2025, says tagged posts have blurred thumbnails and hidden previews so users can choose whether to reveal the content: Reddit spoiler tags.
Do not treat title wording as a universal detector. Reddit says titles containing “spoiler” or “spoilers” are automatically tagged, but “no spoiler” and “no spoilers” are not. Moderators can also enable spoiler tagging for a community; tagged media and text remain hidden until revealed. Both mechanisms still rely on tagging, so an untagged post can get through: Reddit’s spoiler-tag guidance and Reddit’s moderator guidance.

Keep video titles and thumbnails out of the way
Video recommendations can expose a twist in a title or thumbnail before you choose to watch anything. While avoiding spoilers, do not search for the game or open related videos. If an unwanted recommendation appears, community users suggest marking it “Not interested” and repeating that action as needed. That is anecdotal user advice—not a guarantee that YouTube will remove every related recommendation or provide a comprehensive pre-release spoiler filter.

Publisher rules may discourage leaks, but they do not filter your feeds
Square Enix’s material usage policy says unofficial content from its games—including leaked content and content released without permission before an embargo date—must not be posted online, especially before the official release date. It also asks creators to use clear spoiler warnings and encourages verbal warnings at the start of videos. Those are rules for Square Enix material and creator behavior, not a user-side filter or a guarantee that posts elsewhere will be tagged: Square Enix’s material usage policy.
Do not rely on fan wikis or archived pages as spoiler-safe
An archived page is not automatically a safe way to look up a game without seeing later story details. A 2015 paper, “Avoiding Spoilers in Fan Wikis of Episodic Fiction,” studied 16 wiki sites for popular television shows. In that study, 38% of sampled pages were unavailable in the Internet Archive, up to 66% of archive access attempts under the studied conditions could encounter a spoiler, and 19% of sampled actual Wayback Machine requests for wikia.com pages ended in spoilers. These are historical results about sampled TV-fandom wikis and archive requests—not odds for modern RPG wikis or today’s social feeds. The study does not establish that an archived RPG page is safe.
