Sometimes, for specific tasks—but AI-generated experiments are not self-validating. Benchmarks show useful capabilities alongside substantial failures in reproducing research, discovering results from data, and operating laboratory instruments. Whether an AI-generated experiment is trustworthy depends on what it was asked to do, how much human help it received, and how success was measured.
What does “reliable” mean for an AI-generated experiment?
Reliability can refer to several different things: proposing a plausible plan, writing code that runs, reproducing a published result, drawing a sound conclusion from data, or safely carrying out work with physical equipment. Success at one does not establish success at the others.

Computational experiments use code, data, and software environments; laboratory experiments also involve instruments, materials, calibration, and physical hazards. The studies below test different parts of this landscape, so their percentages are not directly comparable and do not yield a universal AI success rate.
What benchmark results tell us
| Evaluation | What it tests | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| PaperBench (2025) | Replication from scratch of 20 ICML 2024 Spotlight and Oral papers, scored across 8,316 gradable subtasks | Best tested agent setup averaged 21.0% | Measures performance on an end-to-end replication benchmark, not general scientific reliability. PaperBench proceedings |
| ScienceAgentBench (2025) | Data-driven discovery tasks drawn from 44 peer-reviewed papers across four disciplines; 102 tasks | Best reported agent solved 32.4% independently and 34.3% with expert-provided knowledge, with three attempts per task | Tests generated programs and execution against benchmark tasks; expert assistance and repeated attempts affect the result. ScienceAgentBench proceedings |
| CORE-Bench (2024) | Computational reproduction using existing code and data; 270 tasks based on 90 papers in computer science, social science, and medicine | Best agent reached 19% accuracy on the hardest task level | Shows that reproducing computational results remains difficult even when a study’s code and data are provided; it does not test novel physical experiments. CORE-Bench paper |
| AFMBench with the AILA framework (2025) | Atomic force microscopy workflows involving design, tool coordination, decisions, execution, and data analysis | GPT-4o had a 29% total error rate in the reported evaluation | This is a result for that system, instrument, workflow, and study conditions—not a general error rate for laboratory AI. Nature Communications study |
The first three benchmarks address computational work in different ways: PaperBench asks for replication from scratch, ScienceAgentBench evaluates data-driven discovery programs, and CORE-Bench supplies existing code and data for reproduction. A separate language-modeling benchmark, LMR-BENCH, contains 28 code-reproduction tasks derived from 23 papers and reports continuing limitations in scientific reasoning and code synthesis. It adds evidence about computational methods, not a rate for science as a whole. LMR-BENCH paper

Can AI conduct scientific experiments?
AI can assist with parts of experimental work, including generating code or helping coordinate instrument workflows. The AFMBench study demonstrated five practical atomic force microscopy experiments, including graphene imaging and microscope calibration. But a demonstration of specific workflows does not establish dependable performance in unfamiliar situations; the study notes that performance on novel scenarios beyond established or repeated protocols remains an open concern.
For physical work, instrument commands and procedures have consequences beyond whether a program runs. A qualified operator should review the planned actions, materials, hazards, calibration, and stop conditions before an AI-controlled workflow begins.

Can AI reproduce a research paper?
It can attempt to, but the benchmark results show why a plausible explanation or working script should not be mistaken for a successful replication. PaperBench asks agents to understand a paper’s contributions, build a codebase, and run experiments; its rubrics were co-developed with paper authors. CORE-Bench instead supplies code and data, yet reports only 19% accuracy for the best agent on its hardest level.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThese tasks differ in what is supplied and what counts as success. A failed attempt also does not automatically identify the cause: the challenge may involve the agent, the implementation, the environment, or the details of the original work. The scores describe performance under the benchmark conditions, not a verdict on every paper or every AI system.

How to assess a specific AI-generated experiment
- Review the design. Treat the proposal as a draft. Check the hypothesis, controls, variables, sample-size rationale, measurement method, and analysis plan against relevant literature and domain expertise.
- Inspect computational work. Check data provenance, dependencies, code, configuration, random seeds where applicable, and execution logs. Run the experiment and verify the outputs directly rather than relying on the model’s description of what it supposedly ran.
- Have a qualified operator review laboratory work. Confirm instrument commands, materials, hazards, calibration, and stop conditions before execution. Do not treat a plausible workflow as evidence that its physical actions are safe or correct.
- Separate execution from inference. A script or instrument may run successfully while the design is flawed, measurements are poor, or the conclusion goes beyond what the data support.
- Seek independent review for consequential results. Where the claim matters, have another qualified person inspect the method or reproduce the result. Keep a record of the model and version, prompt, code, data, parameters, and changes so the work can be examined.
This is a practical set of checks, not a validated universal checklist. The appropriate review depends on the domain and the consequences of an error.
How to compare claims about AI experiment performance
Before comparing systems or headline scores, check whether the evaluations actually test the same thing. Look at the task type, autonomy and expert assistance, number of attempts, success criterion, domain, and novelty of the task. A rubric score for recreating a paper, a program’s benchmark accuracy, and successful instrument operation measure different abilities; ranking them together would be misleading.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I trust AI-generated research results?
Not on the AI’s explanation alone. Check the design, execution, data, and inference independently; consequential results warrant expert review or independent reproduction.
Is there one success rate for AI-generated experiments?
No. The cited evaluations cover distinct computational and laboratory tasks with different conditions and success criteria, so they do not establish a universal rate.
