Before paying for a Pokémon TCG preorder, verify who is selling it, what exact product is promised, when it should ship, and how you can get your money back if it does not arrive. Buy through an official Pokémon channel or a seller you can independently verify, keep payment on-platform, and treat unusually low prices and requests for direct transfers as warning signs—not proof on their own.
How Pokémon TCG preorder scams work
A preorder listing may offer a product the seller does not have and may never deliver. In a January 2, 2026 bulletin, Singapore’s ScamShield described buyers paying deposits for Pokémon card preorders through online platforms, then discovering the product did not arrive or the seller could no longer be reached. ScamShield reported at least S$958,000 lost to e-commerce scams involving Pokémon trading cards in Singapore since October 2025. That figure covers the stated location, category, and period; it is not a global preorder-loss estimate.

ScamShield advises buyers to purchase Pokémon trading cards only from authorised sellers on online platforms and in physical stores. Pokémon’s support pages identify some official and retail channels, but do not provide a complete whitelist for every region or certify every third-party listing.

Pokémon Center says selected merchandise can be preordered before release. Its stated checkout process requires a valid credit card: it may place a temporary authorization, then charge the card when the item ships. A canceled preorder is not charged, although a pending authorization may remain until the financial institution releases it. Pokémon Center also says it cannot guarantee the canceled item will remain available to preorder. These terms describe Pokémon Center, not every retailer or marketplace.

For Pokémon TCG cards, Pokémon Center Support names Pokémon Center, its automated vending machines, limited-time deals with major retailers, and existing mass-market retail partnerships. Availability varies by region and can change, so check the official Pokémon site for the channel relevant to your location rather than treating an unfamiliar seller as approved.
High demand can affect stock. Pokémon says it is working to increase production and replenish impacted products at participating retailers; Pokémon Center may also use a virtual queue during periods of increased traffic. A queue or temporary stock-out does not validate an unrelated seller’s preorder.

How to check a listing before you pay
- Verify the seller and sales channel. Start with Pokémon’s official site or a retailer whose identity and channel you can confirm independently. Read recent seller feedback across more than one source when possible. Ratings alone are not enough; ask questions through the marketplace and save the replies.
- Check exactly what is being sold. Read the listing title, description, product language and edition, quantity, release date, estimated delivery, and return terms. Confirm whether it is genuinely a preorder or whether the seller claims to have the item in hand. When condition or possession matters, look for photos of the actual item; stock images do not prove the seller has it or show its condition.
- Compare the product and price. Compare packaging with Pokémon’s official product images and check the price against suggested retail. Pokémon Support says that a pack priced dramatically below suggested retail is a near-certain counterfeit warning, and puts it this way:
As a general rule, if the price of a pack seems too good to be true, it probably is.
A low price is a reason to investigate, not conclusive proof that a particular listing is counterfeit. - Keep payment within the platform. Prefer a credit card or a secure marketplace payment system with buyer protection. The FTC advises:
Don’t buy from anyone who wants you to pay outside the marketplace’s payment system.
It also warns against gift cards, cash reload cards, cryptocurrency, and wire transfers for these purchases. An “https” address only indicates an encrypted connection; it does not establish that the site or seller is legitimate. - Be wary of unprotected deposits. The Singapore cases described by ScamShield involved PayNow or direct bank-transfer deposits. Avoid irreversible direct transfers to a seller you have not verified. A deposit request is not automatically fraudulent, but the payment route and the seller’s identity matter.
- Save the evidence before checkout. Keep the listing URL or screenshots, seller identity, product description, promised release and delivery dates, order confirmation, and messages. These records can help if the listing changes or a dispute arises.
How to assess a suspicious price or possible counterfeit
Use official product images as a reference, but do not assume that a photo alone authenticates a product. Pokémon warns that counterfeits—especially fake booster packs—can be difficult to distinguish. It suggests holding a suspect card up to a bright light and asking a shop specializing in trading cards to evaluate it. Treat the light check as a clue, not a conclusive test, and do not declare a sealed pack genuine based on one visual check.

For an unopened product or a listing that uses stock photography, the seller’s track record, payment protection, return terms, and the platform’s review process are particularly important.

What to do if the order does not arrive or looks counterfeit
- Preserve the transaction details. Save the listing, screenshots, order record, seller information, shipping details, and all messages. Do not wait to collect evidence until the listing disappears.
- Contact the seller and marketplace through the original order. Use the marketplace’s transaction or dispute workflow, and check its deadlines before waiting for a seller reply. If the seller does not resolve the problem, the FTC recommends contacting the marketplace. If you paid by card, contact the card issuer about disputing the charge when appropriate.
- Follow the specific platform’s counterfeit process. TCGplayer’s Safeguard states that protection applies to presale orders that do not arrive or are not as described. For a counterfeit claim, the buyer must submit a claim with order details, and the suspected item must be received by TCGplayer for review to qualify for a refund. TCGplayer’s refund policy says counterfeit claims must be reported within 30 calendar days of the estimated delivery date. Confirm the current terms and follow the live order workflow; other marketplaces may have different requirements and deadlines.
- Get an independent card evaluation if needed. Pokémon suggests asking a specialist trading-card shop to examine a suspect card. Keep the platform claim moving while checking the marketplace’s instructions and cutoff dates.
Compare listings on the details that affect your risk
When two offers appear similar, compare them on the same practical points. No single one guarantees a safe purchase.
| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Seller | Identity, recent history, contact details, and whether the sales channel can be independently verified. |
| Product | Exact item, language, edition, quantity, and whether photos show the actual item or stock art. |
| Price | How it compares with suggested retail and whether an unusually low price has a credible explanation. |
| Availability | Whether the seller says it has the item in hand or is offering a future preorder, plus the release and estimated delivery dates. |
| Payment and returns | Whether payment stays on-platform, offers recourse, and is covered by clear return terms. |
| Disputes | The marketplace’s complaint deadline and any special counterfeit review or return requirements. |
Apply these checks to retail options available in your region as well as marketplace offers. A platform’s general reputation does not establish that a particular seller or listing is trustworthy.
