No single clue—including a high star average, a sudden burst of reviews, or a low price—proves fraud.
How do I know if Amazon reviews are fake?
You usually cannot determine that from a star rating or one suspicious-looking comment alone. Read several recent reviews, including critical ones, and check whether they describe the specific item and features being sold. Consider the reviewers’ histories and whether the comments appear independent or sponsored. Compare what you find with sources outside the product page, while considering whether those sources are independent too. The FTC recommends these checks, but treats them as ways to assess credibility—not proof that any particular review is fake. FTC marketplace guidance
Look at review timing and context
A concentrated burst of reviews over a short period can be a warning sign. The FTC also advises considering who wrote reviews and whether they are independent or sponsored. A timing pattern can prompt closer scrutiny, but it does not establish that the reviews are fraudulent. Fake reviews can be positive or negative. FTC advice on fake reviews
Know what Amazon’s policy prohibits
Amazon’s US review policy prohibits several forms of manipulation, including compensation tied to reviews, reimbursement after a review, sellers reviewing their own or competitors’ products, and reviews by a seller’s family member or employee. It also prohibits selectively soliciting only positive feedback and manipulating unrelated product variations to improve ratings. Amazon says its examples are not exhaustive. These rules describe platform policy; they do not let shoppers conclusively identify a particular review as fake. Amazon’s US review policy

How can I avoid counterfeit products on Amazon?
Evaluate the specific offer, not just the product page’s reviews. Open the offer you intend to buy and check who is selling it, what the listing promises, what the return conditions are, and whether the price makes sense alongside comparable offers. The FTC recommends reviewing seller details and recent buyer feedback, checking the description and photos, and being cautious about unusually low prices—especially for expensive items. None of these signals alone proves counterfeiting. FTC marketplace guidance
Check the exact offer before ordering
- Seller: Review the seller’s contact information and recent buyer feedback for the offer you selected.
- Description and photos: Check that the stated features match what you want. Consider whether images show the actual item or are only stock photos.
- Price: Compare the offer with similar ones. A price far below comparable offers is a reason to investigate, not a verdict.
- Shipping and returns: Check shipping fees, return conditions, refund rules, and applicable deadlines before paying.
- Payment: Keep payment within the marketplace and consider a safer method such as a credit card. The FTC notes that HTTPS encrypts a connection; it does not prove that a site or seller is legitimate.
What Amazon Transparency can—and cannot—check
Amazon Transparency codes apply only to products enrolled in the program. For a participating item with an Amazon-issued code, scan it in the Amazon Shopping or Transparency app and read the result: Amazon says a valid code returns a green check, while an invalid code returns a red cross. This is a check for applicable enrolled products, not a universal authenticity test for everything sold on Amazon. Amazon Transparency program

What to do when the item arrives
Compare it with the offer
Check the received item and packaging against the exact listing and offer you ordered. If it is an enrolled Transparency product and has an Amazon-issued code, scan it in the Amazon Shopping or Transparency app and review the displayed result.
Keep records and act before deadlines
If the item is materially different from what was advertised, contact the seller promptly, then contact the marketplace if needed. Keep copies of the listing details and order records, seller messages, packaging, and relevant photos. Track the return or refund deadlines. If you paid by card, the FTC advises contacting the card issuer about a dispute while it investigates. You can also report a dishonest business to the FTC and, where appropriate, your state attorney general. FTC guidance on marketplace problems

- Use the Report control below the review and follow the steps. The FTC also lists [email protected] as a reporting route.
- Report suspected fraud to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. If the site offers no matching form path, the FTC says to choose “Other” and include “fake review” in the comments.
