A sale is worth judging by the price you will actually pay—not the size of the discount badge. Check the product’s recent price history, compare the same item across sellers, identify what the crossed-out price represents, and account for fees and eligibility conditions before buying. Price rules vary by country, so the EU’s 30-day reference-price rule should not be treated as a global standard.
How can I tell if a sale is real?
Start with the current final price and ask whether the advertised comparison is meaningful. A large percentage off can be calculated from a reference price that is not the seller’s genuine recent price, or from a recommended retail price (RRP) that shoppers were not actually paying. A discount figure alone does not establish that you are getting a bargain.

Check the price history over a useful period, including the weeks before a major sale event. Price-history websites and browser extensions can help reveal whether the “was” price and sale price fit the product’s recent pattern. Their records may not cover every seller, region, or product variant, so use them as evidence rather than a guarantee.
Then compare the same model, size, bundle, and delivery terms at other retailers and the manufacturer’s official site. If two offers compete, compare the final payable price, product match, historical prices, reference-price meaning, mandatory fees, eligibility conditions, and credibility of any urgency claim.

How do I check if a price was inflated before a sale?
- Confirm the exact item. Match the model number, size, colour, storage capacity, included accessories, and bundle. Similar-looking products may not be comparable.
- Look at its price history. Check a period that includes the weeks before the sale, not just the day before it. Note the seller and variant shown in the history, since records may be incomplete.
- Compare current offers. Check the same item at multiple retailers and the brand’s official website, including delivery terms.
- Identify the reference price. Ask whether the crossed-out amount is the seller’s previous price, an RRP, or a competitor comparison. Those are different claims; an unclear comparison is not proof of savings.
- Calculate the payable total. Include unavoidable delivery or service charges, and account for any membership, subscription, or other requirement to receive the advertised price.
Keep a screenshot or note of the offer, seller, price, terms, and date if you may need to raise a complaint. This is a practical record-keeping step, not a legal requirement established by the guidance cited here.
Is the crossed-out price genuine?
Not necessarily. The seller should make clear what the reference figure represents, and the comparison should be current and accurate. A previous selling price, a manufacturer’s recommended price, and another retailer’s price are not interchangeable. If the page does not explain the basis for the comparison, do not assume the crossed-out number proves that the sale price is a saving.

The rules for announced reductions depend on where you shop. In the EU, the reference is generally the lowest price the trader applied during the previous 30 days. For successive reductions, ECC-Net describes the reference as the price before the first reduction. See the European Commission’s Price Indication Directive guidance and ECC-Net’s price-indications guidance for details. This EU rule is not a universal standard.

In the United Kingdom, CMA guidance focuses on clear, complete, accurate upfront total prices, including unavoidable charges; do not assume the EU’s 30-day reference-price rule applies there. Relevant provisions of the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers (DMCC) Act on unfair commercial practices apply from 6 April 2025 and address misleading actions and omissions by their likely effect on consumer decisions. In the United States, the FTC source cited here concerns its Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees; it is not a general 30-day list-price rule. The FTC says dynamic pricing is allowed when pricing information is not misleading and explains how promotions unavailable to everyone, such as rewards-program offers, should be presented. How can I compare Black Friday prices?
Use the same checks you would for any sale; a major shopping event does not make a discount percentage more reliable. Compare the precise product and bundle, the final payable price, its recent history, and the meaning of the advertised reference price. Check mandatory charges and whether the deal requires a paid membership, subscription, or other qualifying step. Read the terms attached to discounts or cashback, including whether they involve recurring debits.

Price-comparison services and price-history tools can help gather those checks, but neither guarantees complete records for every seller or variant. Verify the offer on the retailer’s own page before you order.

When should urgency claims make me pause?
A countdown that restarts when you refresh, or a “only a few left” message that cannot be independently verified, is a reason to pause and check the offer elsewhere. Do not let a timer make the decision for you; look up the product and price independently before buying.

The European Commission’s 2026 account of its 2025 sales sweep reported that 18% of checked traders used pressure-selling techniques, and more than half of those cases were misleading. In the Commission’s words, “Adding items without the consumer’s consent, displaying prices in a misleading way, falsely claiming a product is running out, or hiding extra fees until the end of the process are illegal practices under EU consumer law.” The statement concerns EU consumer law, not a universal rule. The sweep is a screening snapshot, not an estimate of every retailer.
What did the EU’s 2025 sales sweep find?
The European Commission’s 2026 report page says 23 EU countries plus Iceland and Norway participated and that 314 traders were checked. Its findings give context to the kinds of sale practices worth checking; they do not establish that every suspicious-looking discount is illegal.
- 30% of the 314 checked traders referenced discounts incorrectly.
- 36% attempted to add optional items to baskets; among those traders, 40% did so without clearly requesting consent.
- 34% displayed price comparisons; among those, 60% did not clearly explain the source of the reference price.
- 18% used pressure-selling techniques, with more than half of those cases misleading.
- 10% used drip pricing.
The Commission’s separate summary of the sweep describes 25 participating countries and says it screened 314 traders: 94% advertised discounts, at least 30% did not comply with EU price-reduction rules, another 30% of cases needed more information, and 40% fully complied.
