Before paying again, check the first transaction in your UPI app. A “Pending” status means confirmation has not arrived; it does not prove the payment failed. Check the status, amount, recipient or merchant, time, and transaction reference. If the first payment succeeded, do not repeat it. If your account was debited and the transaction remains unresolved, raise a complaint against that specific debit through UPI Help or contact your bank.
What to check before retrying a UPI payment
- Open transaction history in the UPI app you used and select the payment in question.
- Check the details: status, amount, recipient or merchant, timestamp, and transaction ID or reference number. Make sure you are looking at the original payment, not a later attempt.
- Refresh or check the status again. NPCI describes “Pending” as a transaction stuck in processing while confirmation has not been received. Do not treat that status alone as proof of failure.
- Do not make an immediate second payment while the first one is pending or otherwise unresolved. If the status changes to successful, do not pay again for the same transfer or purchase.
NPCI’s UPI Help guidance describes the standard process of selecting a transaction from history and raising a complaint against it. Menu names and screen layouts can vary by app.

My UPI transaction has failed but my bank account has been debited
Keep the transaction reference and check whether the amount returns. NPCI’s FAQ advises contacting your bank if a failed debit has not been refunded within one hour. That is NPCI FAQ guidance; the applicable RBI outer limit for the specified domestic failed-payment cases depends on whether the transaction was a transfer or a merchant payment.
If the payment was a transfer to another person
For a domestic UPI funds transfer where your account was debited but the beneficiary was not credited, the RBI framework requires the beneficiary bank to reverse the transaction by T+1 day if it cannot credit the beneficiary. In this framework, T is the calendar date of the transaction.
If you were paying a merchant
For a domestic UPI merchant payment where your account was debited but the merchant did not receive confirmation, the RBI framework sets an auto-reversal limit of T+5 days. Identify the transaction type before applying a deadline: the transfer and merchant-payment timelines are not interchangeable.
The RBI describes the prescribed turnaround time as “the outer limit for resolution of failed transactions.” Banks and other operators should try to resolve failures sooner. The circular’s framework covers the described domestic transactions where both the originator and beneficiary are in India.

My transaction is showing ‘Pending’. The amount has been debited and not credited. Is there a problem?
Pending means that confirmation has not yet been received; it does not establish that the payment failed. NPCI’s FAQ says a pending transfer can reflect a delay at the beneficiary bank and that funds may reach the beneficiary within 48 hours. Treat that as NPCI FAQ guidance about the described pending payment, not as the RBI deadline for reversing a specified failed transaction.
Keep checking the original transaction’s status rather than sending a second payment just because the recipient has not yet confirmed receipt. If the debit remains unresolved, use the app’s complaint flow for that transaction or contact your bank.

How to report a duplicate debit or unresolved transaction
- Open the payment app’s transaction history and select the debit you are disputing.
- Choose its UPI Help or complaint option, if available, and select the reason that best describes what happened—for example, duplicate or multiple transaction, debit without merchant confirmation, or a failed transaction whose debit has not been returned.
- Submit the complaint and save its reference number. Check the complaint status in the app and keep the original transaction reference and relevant details.
- If the app’s help flow is unavailable or does not resolve the issue, contact the bank or app support with those references.
NPCI’s July 2023 UPI Help guidelines describe raising a complaint after five minutes for eligible transactions. They list duplicate or multiple transactions among the complaint reasons and exclude successful person-to-person transactions from the supported complaint flow. The guide describes a standard journey; it does not establish that every app has identical screens or labels.
RBI reversal limits and compensation
| Specified domestic UPI case | RBI auto-reversal limit | Compensation for delay beyond the limit |
|---|---|---|
| Funds transfer: payer debited, beneficiary not credited, and beneficiary bank unable to credit | By T+1 day | ₹100 per day beyond T+1 |
| Merchant payment: payer debited, merchant did not receive confirmation | Within T+5 days | ₹100 per day beyond T+5 |
These are the RBI circular’s limits for the two specified failed-payment situations, not a promise that every pending payment will be reversed on the same schedule. The circular says applicable compensation should be credited without waiting for a customer complaint or claim.

What to do if the deadline passes
If your bank has not resolved the failure within the applicable RBI turnaround time, escalate the issue through the Reserve Bank–Integrated Ombudsman Scheme. Retain the transaction and complaint references, and follow the RBI’s current official filing instructions. The cited turnaround-time framework is for domestic transactions; if your UPI payment involved cross-border acceptance, ask your issuing bank and payment provider which remedy timeline applies.
