Before buying, pause long enough to confirm the exact item, its full delivered cost, the seller and the return terms. Decide what you need before looking at the discount: a ticking clock or a bold sale badge is not a substitute for checking whether the product fits your requirements.
Choose what you need before judging the discount
Write down the features you will not compromise on and set a maximum budget that includes delivery costs. For example, if you need a particular phone storage capacity or appliance size, treat that as a requirement—not a detail to trade away because another version is marked down. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises shoppers to determine which features matter and compare products before buying in its Online Shopping – Security Tips guidance.

This order matters: first decide whether the item is right for you, then decide whether its price and terms make the purchase worthwhile. A discount on a model that lacks a must-have feature is not a good deal for your needs.

Check the listing against the exact item you intend to buy. Record or copy the manufacturer and model number, then verify the size, color, condition and included components. A product-family name, photograph or discount badge may not identify the specific version being sold.

- What is included: Check whether accessories, parts or other components are included, sold separately or available only in a bundle.
Read the full product description rather than relying only on the headline or image. If a key detail is missing or inconsistent, ask the seller to confirm it before paying; do not guess under time pressure.
Compare the full price, not just the sale price
Work out the total payable amount, including shipping, handling, taxes, other fees and any required bundle or add-on. A listing with a lower item price can cost more once those charges are included.

If you are comparing listings, compare the same model and condition across them. Check what each seller charges to deliver it, what is included and whether the seller’s return terms change the value of the offer. Price-comparison sites and alerts can help you find alternatives, but a ranking is not proof that a price is fair: the FTC warns that some comparison sites may promote paid results in its online shopping guidance.

Confirm who is actually selling the item, especially on a marketplace where the platform and seller may be different. Look for identifiable seller and contact information, review the delivery promise, and understand what protections the marketplace does—and does not—provide. An encrypted connection (HTTPS) protects information in transit; it does not establish that a seller is legitimate.

Before checkout, find the return policy that applies to this specific listing. Sale and clearance goods may have different terms. Check:
- Whether the item is eligible for return or exchange, and any exceptions.
- The return deadline and how it is calculated.
- Who pays return shipping and whether a restocking fee applies.
- How to start a return and whether marketplace protections have limits.
There is no universal rule that every sale item can be returned. Rights and policies depend on the jurisdiction, seller and purchase context; consult your local consumer agency for rules that apply where you live. New Zealand Consumer Protection advises shoppers who are unsure not to proceed in its Check before you buy online guidance.

Treat urgency as a reason to verify, not proof of a scam
A countdown timer or “last chance” message can make a decision feel more urgent. New Zealand Consumer Protection identifies fake discounts and countdown timers as possible pressure tactics, but that does not mean every limited-time offer is false. Use urgency as a prompt to check the seller, exact item, total price and terms rather than as a reason to skip those checks.
Ask yourself whether the deadline changes the value of the item or is simply making you feel rushed. If an essential detail or return term remains unclear, pause, ask the seller or choose a listing from a seller whose information and policies you can verify.

A quick checklist before you pay
- Need: Have I named the exact item and the features I will not compromise on?
- Match: Does the listing match the model, size, color, condition and included components?
- Total: Have I added shipping, handling, taxes, fees and required extras?
- Seller: Do I know who is selling and fulfilling the order, and what marketplace protections apply?
- Exit: Have I checked return eligibility, the deadline, shipping responsibility, fees and exceptions?
- Pressure: Would I still choose this item if the timer or “last chance” message were not there?
- Uncertainty: Can I verify any missing detail before checkout?
Keep records and act promptly if there is a problem
Save the listing and product description, order confirmation, seller messages, receipt and the return-policy details shown when you buy. If the item that arrives is wrong or defective, contact the seller promptly and keep a record of the communication. Depending on the transaction and where you live, you may also have payment-dispute options or other remedies; check with your payment provider and relevant local consumer agency rather than assuming one remedy applies everywhere.
