A sale price does not tell you whether a game includes a free upgrade. Check the exact game and edition: on PS5, inspect the upgrade offer on the game hub; on Xbox, look for the Smart Delivery icon on that title’s store page or packaging. Then confirm the fee, eligibility conditions, and whether your console can use the disc.
Does this PS4 game have a free PS5 upgrade?
PlayStation’s upgrade terms vary by game: an upgrade may cost nothing, require a purchase, or be available only for a limited time. Check the offer for the specific game before buying; a PS4 game running on PS5 through backward compatibility does not by itself mean a separate PS5 version is included. - Find the exact game and edition you plan to buy, including whether it is a disc or digital copy.
- On PS5, open the game’s hub and inspect the PS5 upgrade offer. Read the displayed price and any deadline or other conditions.
- For a disc edition, confirm your PS5 has a disc drive and check that the disc’s country or region matches your PlayStation account region.
- Compare the edition’s price plus any upgrade fee with the cost of buying the PS5 edition outright.
Check disc and account restrictions
A PS4 disc upgrade requires a PS5 with a disc drive. After upgrading, you must keep the PS4 disc inserted to play the PS5 digital version. A PS4 disc cannot be used on PS5 Digital Edition. PlayStation also says PS4 games redeemed as a PlayStation Plus benefit are not eligible for an upgrade unless it specifies otherwise. See PlayStation’s upgrade conditions.

Look for the Smart Delivery icon on the exact game’s Xbox store page or packaging. Xbox says that when a title displays the icon, the upgraded version is free when available. Developers decide whether their games use Smart Delivery, so do not assume an upgrade is included just because the game is discounted or runs on a newer Xbox. Xbox’s 2020 announcement put that choice with developers outside Xbox Game Studios as well: “it will be up to the individual developer to determine whether they take advantage of Smart Delivery.” Read the Xbox announcement.
Separate compatibility from an optimized upgrade
Some Xbox One games can run on Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility. That only establishes that the game can run; it does not establish that a distinct optimized version is included. Xbox Series S is digital-only, so it cannot play physical Xbox game discs. If the discounted copy is a disc, it is not usable on Series S.
What to compare before paying

A historical example is not proof of current eligibility: PlayStation’s 2020 FAQ named Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Sackboy: A Big Adventure as then offering no-cost PS5 upgrades.
