Compute Engine’s VM automatic-restart policy addresses certain VM-level events; it does not relaunch an FFmpeg process that exits while the VM remains running.
A restarted encoder may reconnect to YouTube, but that alone does not prove the live stream has recovered or that the same live event continues. Check both the service logs and YouTube Live Control Room after a restart.

Choose recovery for the failure layer
There are several distinct failure points. Match the recovery mechanism to the one that failed; no single restart setting covers all of them.

For a persistent Linux VM running FFmpeg, use a guest process supervisor such as systemd. Use Compute Engine’s automatic restart policy as a separate layer for eligible VM events, not as a substitute for process supervision. Google’s guidance on instance scheduling options describes the VM-level policy.

Run FFmpeg as a systemd service
Keep FFmpeg in the foreground so systemd can observe when it exits. A shell wrapper that backgrounds FFmpeg can make the service manager track the wrong process. The unit’s exact user, paths, inputs, and FFmpeg options depend on your Linux distribution and stream source.
1. Create a unit for your stream
After installing FFmpeg and deciding how the service will receive its input and YouTube credentials, create a unit such as /etc/systemd/system/youtube-ffmpeg.service. Adapt the executable path and command for your deployment:

WantedBy=multi-user.targetINPUT is intentionally not a universal command: it could be a file, camera, network feed, or generated media, and each needs appropriate input and encoding options. Confirm the actual FFmpeg command works in the foreground before relying on systemd to supervise it. Restart=on-failure asks systemd to restart after a failure, while RestartSec=5 inserts a short delay rather than retrying immediately. Choose an appropriate delay and retry behavior for your workload.
2. Protect the stream key
Get the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube describes the key as what tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it; treat it like a credential. Do not commit it to source control or put it in a broadly readable file or diagnostic output. One deployment pattern is a root-owned environment file with restrictive permissions, readable by the service only as required; a managed secret-delivery mechanism is another option. If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

3. Load, start, and enable the unit
After saving the unit and arranging permissions for its input and environment file, reload systemd, start the service, and enable it so it starts at boot:

sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-ffmpeg.service
sudo systemctl status youtube-ffmpeg.serviceenable --now both enables the unit for boot and starts it immediately. Check the status output for a running service; a running service is not by itself proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.

4. Test both process recovery and boot behavior
- Confirm the service starts and the expected stream appears in YouTube Live Control Room.
- In a controlled test, stop the FFmpeg process or service and verify systemd starts it again. Inspect the journal for the exit reason and restart.
- Separately verify the unit is enabled and test the reboot path in a safe maintenance window. A process restart test does not validate VM restart behavior.
- Check YouTube’s incoming preview and stream health after each test. YouTube recommends testing beforehand with similar audio and motion and monitoring stream health during the event: YouTube encoder settings and stream health guidance.
Configure and verify YouTube ingest
Use the stream URL and key associated with the intended YouTube live stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Match the encoder’s output to the selected stream settings and the network capacity available from the VM. There is no single safe FFmpeg command or bitrate for every source and deployment; the input, resolution, frame rate, codec, and available encoding resources all matter. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings recommendations rather than copying settings intended for different stream conditions.

After FFmpeg restarts, inspect the preview and health messages in Live Control Room and confirm the intended broadcast is actually receiving video. Diagnose a stream that did not recover
- FFmpeg exited again: Read the service journal for the exit code, input errors, and repeated restarts. Check that the source is available and the command uses valid input and output options.
- The service is inactive after a failure: Inspect the unit and systemd status for configuration errors, permission problems, or a restart policy that does not cover the exit condition. Confirm the unit was reloaded after edits.
- The service runs, but YouTube shows no incoming video: Check the stream URL and key, the selected YouTube stream, network access, and output configuration. Review Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health messages; service status alone cannot establish ingest health.
- The stream worked until the VM rebooted: Confirm the unit is enabled at boot, its input and credential files are available to the service, and network-dependent startup ordering suits the deployment. Separately check the VM’s lifecycle and scheduling policy.
- The VM itself stopped or rebooted unexpectedly: Investigate instance logs and Cloud Monitoring dashboards for shutdown or reboot events. Google’s Compute Engine reboot troubleshooting guidance covers VM-level diagnosis; it is separate from checking whether FFmpeg is healthy.
- Cloud Run keeps failing after retries: Its restart policy is not an unlimited retry loop; Google documents up to three sequential attempts. Do not treat the offline FFmpeg transcoding tutorial as confirmation that continuous live-streaming is a supported drop-in use case.
- You need protection against encoder or network failure: A separately configured backup encoder is a different recovery path from systemd. Follow YouTube’s failover guidance and test the player’s rollover behavior before depending on it.
