The deployment model that works for WordPress
A WordPress release contains two different kinds of change: reproducible code and changing site data. Git and a CI/CD pipeline are excellent for custom themes, plugins, configuration templates, build files, and deployment scripts. They are not a safe substitute for a content migration plan for posts, pages, media, comments, orders, form submissions, or other live records.

Organize the release path so every change follows the same gates:
- Pull request: a developer proposes a change in a feature branch.
- Automated validation: linting, PHP tests, JavaScript builds, security checks, and packaging run before merge.
- Staging deployment: a merge to the staging branch deploys the exact merged commit automatically.
- Staging verification: browser, integration, plugin, and WP-CLI checks run against the staging URL.
- Production preparation: the operator confirms the release, exports a database backup, and verifies that files and rollback assets exist.
- Approved promotion: a protected production environment permits one release at a time after a reviewer approves it.
- Post-deployment tasks: migrations, URL replacement where needed, cache flushing, and health checks run through WP-CLI or an equivalent deployment script.
GitHub describes deployment environments for production, staging, and development, with protection rules, environment secrets, branch restrictions, and concurrency controls. Those controls let you keep staging fast while making production deliberately harder to change.

What belongs in Git—and what must stay as data
Commit anything required to rebuild the code portion of the site from a clean checkout:
- Custom themes and child themes.
- Custom plugins and must-use plugins.
- Composer manifests and lock files.
- Node package manifests, lock files, and build configuration.
- WordPress configuration templates with secret values removed.
- Deployment scripts, database migration files, and health-check scripts.
- Block patterns, theme.json files, and other source assets that are part of the product.
Keep credentials out of the repository. Host keys, SSH private keys, API tokens, salts, and database passwords belong in GitHub environment secrets or the hosting platform’s secret store. A template can define the variable names that a deployment needs, but never commit the values used by staging or production.
Editorial and transactional content needs an explicit synchronization decision. Posts, pages, media attachments, comments, customer orders, memberships, form entries, and user-generated data live in the database and often change after staging is created. Replacing production with a complete staging database can erase new content and transactions. Decide whether a release needs a one-way migration, a selected-table import, a content freeze, or no database movement at all.
| Asset | Recommended treatment | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Custom PHP, JavaScript, CSS, and templates | Version in Git | These files must be reproducible and reviewable. |
| Plugin and theme build manifests | Version in Git, including lock files | Builds should resolve the same dependency versions in CI. |
| Configuration templates | Version the template; inject secrets at runtime | Reviewable settings are separated from credentials. |
| Posts, pages, media, comments, orders, and form entries | Keep in the database; migrate selectively | They are live content or transactions, not deployable code. |
| Uploaded media files | Use a documented media-sync or backup process | A code checkout does not contain production uploads. |
Prepare the repository and environments
Use a branch model that matches the release path
Keep a protected release branch for production and a staging branch for continuous integration. Feature branches merge through pull requests. A common arrangement is:
feature/*for individual changes.stagingfor the branch that deploys automatically to staging.mainor another protected release branch for production.
Whatever names you choose, configure the production environment to accept deployments only from the protected release branch. Require review before merging and keep the commit deployed to staging visible in the release record.
Make a clean checkout deployable
The deployment job should be able to start from an empty workspace and produce the same artifact every time. Commit dependency lock files, define the PHP and Node versions used by the project, and document the commands that install dependencies and build assets. Exclude local configuration, logs, caches, and generated files that are rebuilt during deployment.

Pin third-party GitHub Actions to a reviewed major or full version rather than floating references. Test action upgrades on staging because GitHub Actions interfaces, WordPress core, plugins, themes, and hosting controls change over time.
Create separate GitHub environments
Create environments named staging and production. Store staging credentials only in the staging environment and production credentials only in production. For production, add required reviewers, restrict the allowed deployment branch, and enable any available wait timer or other protection rule that fits your change process.
Build the GitHub Actions workflow
Use different triggers for validation, staging, and production:
pull_requestruns checks without changing a server.pushto the staging branch deploys the merged commit automatically.workflow_dispatchstarts a production release when an operator is ready.
A minimal structure can look like this; replace the deployment commands with those required by your host:
name: WordPress deployment
on:
pull_request:
push:
branches: [staging]
workflow_dispatch:
jobs:
validate:
runs-on: ubuntu-latest
steps:
- uses: actions/checkout@v4
- name: Install dependencies
run: composer install --no-interaction --prefer-dist
- name: Build assets
run: npm ci && npm run build
- name: Run tests
run: composer test
deploy-staging:
if: github.event_name == 'push' && github.ref == 'refs/heads/staging'
needs: validate
runs-on: ubuntu-latest
environment: staging
concurrency:
group: wordpress-staging
cancel-in-progress: false
steps:
- uses: actions/checkout@v4
- name: Deploy to staging
run: ./deploy/deploy-staging.sh
- name: Verify staging
run: ./deploy/health-check.sh https://staging.example.com
deploy-production:
if: github.event_name == 'workflow_dispatch'
needs: validate
runs-on: ubuntu-latest
environment: production
concurrency:
group: wordpress-production
cancel-in-progress: false
steps:
- uses: actions/checkout@v4
- name: Export backup and deploy
run: ./deploy/deploy-production.sh
In a real workflow, the production job should deploy the selected release commit rather than whichever branch happens to be current when a button is clicked. You can require a release tag or pass a commit SHA as a workflow input, then record that identifier in the deployment log.
Keep validation proportional to the site
At pull-request time, run fast checks: PHP syntax and coding standards, static analysis, JavaScript linting, unit tests, dependency vulnerability checks, and a build. Staging checks can be slower and closer to real usage:

- Check browser console errors, PHP error logs, HTTP status codes, and basic response times for regressions.
Use test credentials and isolated integrations in staging. A staging deployment should never send customer email, charge a payment method, or mutate a production API unless that behavior is explicitly required and protected.
Handle the WordPress database without overwriting live content
Choose a migration direction
Most code releases need no database copy. If a plugin or theme adds tables, options, or schema changes, ship an idempotent migration with the release and run it once on staging before production. Record the migration version so a rerun does not duplicate data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen staging needs representative content, create a sanitized snapshot from production and refresh staging on a schedule that suits the project. Remove personal data, payment information, private comments, and secrets before the snapshot is made available to developers. Never push a full staging database back to production merely because staging was refreshed from production earlier.
For editorial changes created in staging, use a deliberate method: export selected content, use a migration plugin or WP-CLI command designed for that content type, or schedule a short content freeze and replace only the affected records. Document how media URLs and attachment metadata are handled.
Back up before touching production
Export the production database and preserve the files required to restore the previous release before running migrations. A backup is useful only if the team knows where it is stored, how long it is retained, and how to restore it. Test restoration on a non-production environment periodically rather than discovering a permissions or compatibility problem during an incident.
Use WP-CLI for repeatable operations
WP-CLI’s official documentation describes it as a tool that “turns WordPress into something you can automate.” Run commands through the same deployment account and PHP version used by the site. Typical operations include:

wp db export backup.sql
wp search-replace 'https://staging.example.com' 'https://example.com' --all-tables
wp cache flush
wp db export creates a pre-deployment SQL backup. wp search-replace updates URLs across tables and is designed to account for serialized data; review its output and scope before running it. Use the command only when the environment actually needs a URL change, because an unnecessary replacement can alter stored links or integration settings. Run cache flushing after code or option changes that would otherwise leave stale output.
Require approval for production
Production deployments should normally be manual even when staging is automatic. WordPress.com recommends automatic deployments for staging and manual deployments for production; that split gives developers quick feedback while keeping the live release an explicit decision.
Configure the production environment with:
- Required reviewers: at least one person who did not author the change approves the deployment.
- Branch restrictions: only the protected release branch or approved tags can target production.
- Environment secrets: production credentials are unavailable to jobs that have not passed the environment gate.
- Concurrency: set a group such as
wordpress-productionso a second release waits or is rejected while one is active. - Deployment visibility: record commit SHA, migration version, operator, approval, start time, and result.
Concurrency matters because two overlapping releases can apply migrations in the wrong order, invalidate each other’s caches, or leave the server running a mixture of files. Decide whether a queued release should wait for the current one or be cancelled when a newer release supersedes it; for database migrations, waiting is usually safer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Promotion, rollback, and post-deployment checks
Promote the same artifact tested on staging
Do not rebuild production from a moving dependency range after staging passed. Build once, retain the artifact, and promote that artifact or commit. Before approval, compare the planned database migrations, confirm maintenance or content-freeze requirements, and check that the backup completed successfully.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Run post-deployment tasks in order
- Put the release files in place using the host’s atomic or otherwise documented deployment method.
- Run database migrations with a lock or other mechanism that prevents duplicate execution.
- Perform URL search-replace only when the environment change requires it.
- Flush page, object, opcode, and application caches that are affected by the release.
- Run WP-CLI health checks and HTTP smoke tests.
- Inspect PHP and web-server logs for fatal errors, failed cron tasks, and unexpected redirects.
Define rollback before the first release
A code rollback can restore the previous artifact, but it does not automatically undo a database migration. For every schema or data change, provide a backward-compatible path or a tested reversal procedure. If a release cannot be safely reversed, keep the old code compatible with the new schema until the migration is proven in production.
If a smoke test fails, stop further deployments, preserve logs, and decide whether to roll back code, disable a feature flag, or repair the data forward. Restore the database only after confirming the backup timestamp and understanding what content arrived after that backup; restoring it may delete legitimate new orders or editorial updates.

Self-managed Actions versus managed WordPress deployment
A managed service can remove server plumbing, while a self-managed pipeline offers finer control. Compare the operational details rather than choosing on a feature checklist alone.
| Capability | Self-managed GitHub Actions | WordPress.com GitHub Deployments | WP Engine documented capabilities |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repository and deployment integration | You design the workflow, runner, packaging, and transport. | Connects a repository and deploys plugin, theme, or full-site code to staging or production. | The 2026 developer whitepaper describes Git and CI/CD integrations. |
| Staging creation and refresh | Depends on your host API and scripts. | Supports staging deployments; exact limits depend on the service configuration. | The whitepaper describes one-click staging and development environments; verify plan and region limits. |
| Production approval | GitHub environments provide reviewers, branch rules, secrets, and concurrency. | Documentation recommends manual production deployments. | Use the host’s controls together with your CI approval gate. |
| SSH and WP-CLI | Available only if your host exposes them and your workflow is configured securely. | Availability depends on the selected WordPress.com setup. | The whitepaper lists SSH Gateway access and WP-CLI. |
| Database migrations and cache clearing | You own scripts, ordering, backups, and failure handling. | Run the migration approach supported by the connected site. | The whitepaper describes post-deployment scripts for migrations, cache clearing, and feature activation. |
| Observability and rollback | You must assemble logs, backups, alerts, and artifact retention. | Use the service’s deployment history plus your application checks. | Confirm current backup, rollback, and monitoring behavior for the plan and region. |
| Total operating cost | Includes CI minutes, engineering time, hosting, storage, and monitoring. | Depends on the WordPress.com plan and deployment needs. | Depends on plan, region, environments, and usage; vendor capabilities are not performance guarantees. |
WordPress.com also documents Studio Sync as an alternative when Git version control is not available or required. It is a different operating model: use it when a site needs synchronized development without adopting a repository-based release process.
Security controls that prevent an automated incident
- Use short-lived credentials or deployment keys with the smallest required scope.
- Keep production secrets unavailable to pull-request jobs from forks.
- Review third-party actions and pin their versions.
- Require protected branches and code review for workflow files themselves.
- Separate staging services, email, payment gateways, webhooks, and API credentials from production.
- Mask secrets in logs and prohibit commands that print environment variables.
- Limit SSH users to the deployment directory and required WP-CLI operations.
- Retain deployment logs and database backups according to the site’s legal and operational requirements.
Troubleshoot the failures you will see most often
The workflow succeeds but the site still serves old code
Check that the job deployed to the expected document root and commit, then flush the relevant page, object, opcode, and CDN caches. Confirm that the web process can read the new files and that a symlink or release directory switch completed.
A migration runs twice
Add a migration version table or an idempotent option check, acquire a deployment lock, and use the production concurrency group. Inspect whether a retry started a second job before the first had finished.
Staging tests affect production
Audit environment variables, DNS, webhook endpoints, cron targets, and plugin settings. Replace production credentials with staging-only values and disable outbound integrations that are not needed for the test.
The URL replacement breaks a serialized option
Use WP-CLI’s search-replace command rather than a raw SQL substitution, limit the tables deliberately, review the dry-run or reported replacement count, and keep the pre-deployment export available for recovery.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A production release is blocked waiting for approval
Open the repository’s deployment or environment view, identify the required reviewer, and confirm that the workflow is targeting the allowed branch. If the release is obsolete, cancel it rather than approving an unneeded commit.
Quick Recap
Implementation checklist
- Repository contains all custom code, lock files, configuration templates, migrations, and deployment scripts.
- No passwords, API tokens, private keys, or salts are committed.
