To automate website screenshots in Pipedream, connect a trigger to either a Node.js step that launches a headless browser or a managed screenshot action/API. Then save or pass the resulting image to a downstream step, such as storage or a notification. Use browser automation when you need browser-level control; use an API action when its documented fields fit your workflow.

Choose the capture method that fits your workflow

Method Best fit What to plan for
Puppeteer in a Node.js step You need browser automation or custom orchestration inside the workflow. Chromium runs within the workflow step. Pipedream’s Puppeteer package page recommends 2 GB of workflow memory for best results and says to close the browser before the step ends. Pipedream Puppeteer package documentation
GetScreenshot action The documented managed capture fields cover your needs. The Pipedream integration supports a URL, PNG/JPEG/PDF output, optional email delivery, an optional DOM selector, and additional parameters. It uses API-key authentication through a connected Pipedream account. Pipedream GetScreenshot integration
Another hosted screenshot API You want a managed capture request and have confirmed the service supports your required controls. Check the current API’s request format, output handling, pricing, and service terms. The available vendor tutorial illustrates calling an API from Pipedream and writing image bytes to temporary storage, but does not establish current Pipedream file limits. Site-Shot’s Pipedream tutorial

Pipedream also lists an HTML to Image MCP service for website screenshots and HTML/CSS conversion to images or PDFs. Its listing does not provide enough detail to compare its capture controls with the GetScreenshot action. Pipedream HTML to Image MCP listing

Build the workflow around trigger, capture, and delivery

  1. Choose a trigger. Use a schedule for recurring captures, a webhook for an external request, or an app event when another service should initiate the capture. Pipedream’s cited package and integration pages establish capture options, not the exact setup for every trigger.
  2. Set the page URL. Take it from the trigger’s data or configure it directly. For the GetScreenshot action, the URL field expects an address beginning with http:// or https://.
  3. Capture the image. Choose Puppeteer in a Node.js step for browser automation, or configure a managed screenshot action/API.
  4. Persist or hand off the result. Send the file to the storage or service your workflow uses, or pass it to a later step. A successful capture is not the same as durable storage.
  5. Optionally notify or deliver. Add a downstream step to share a link, send a message, or use the integration’s optional email delivery if that matches your needs.

Capture a screenshot with Puppeteer in Node.js

Pipedream’s Puppeteer package documentation supports using headless Chromium in a Node.js code step. This minimal pattern opens a page, saves a PNG, and closes the browser in a finally block so cleanup also runs if navigation or capture fails. Confirm the package import and code-step configuration against Pipedream’s current package instructions before deploying.

import puppeteer from "puppeteer";

const url = event.url ?? "https://example.com";
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();

try {
  const page = await browser.newPage();
  await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: "networkidle2", timeout: 60000 });
  const image = await page.screenshot({ type: "png", fullPage: true });

  // Use Pipedream's supported file or storage mechanism in a later step.
  // Avoid returning raw image bytes as ordinary step output.
  return { url, captured: true, bytes: image.length };
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

The example returns capture metadata, not the PNG itself. Decide how the binary image will reach its destination using Pipedream’s current file and storage facilities. The cited vendor tutorial recommends writing API response bytes to /tmp and passing a path downstream rather than returning raw PNG bytes as a step export; treat its claims about platform limits as vendor guidance, not verified Pipedream rules.

#1 Best Overall

Adjust capture behavior deliberately

  • Full page: fullPage: true captures beyond the initial viewport; use false for viewport-only output.
  • Wait condition: networkidle2 is one navigation choice, not a guarantee that every page’s dynamic content has finished. For a page with delayed content, wait for a page-specific selector or a known delay before capture.
  • Output type: Puppeteer supports screenshot settings through its browser API; choose a type and options that match your downstream use and check the current Puppeteer documentation for details.
  • Memory: Pipedream’s package page recommends setting workflow memory to 2 GB for best results with browser automation. That is a recommendation from the package page, not a claim that every capture requires that amount.

The package page specifically instructs users to close the browser at the end of the Node.js step because leaving it open can keep the step running. See Pipedream’s Puppeteer package instructions.

Use Pipedream’s GetScreenshot action or another screenshot API

Configure the documented GetScreenshot action

  1. Add the GetScreenshot app action to your workflow.
  2. Connect the account and store its API key through Pipedream’s connected-account authentication rather than placing a secret in code or logs.
  3. Map the page URL into the URL field and select PNG, JPEG, or PDF output.
  4. Set an optional DOM element selector or additional parameters if needed; the action also exposes optional email delivery.
  5. Inspect the action’s output and configure a downstream step to persist or deliver the result.

The integration page documents these fields, but does not establish every API’s binary-output behavior or every option’s semantics. Confirm the current action configuration and the selected service’s terms before relying on a specific output format or delivery behavior. GetScreenshot on Pipedream

Use an API directly when the action does not fit

A direct API request can be useful when you need a service’s specific capture parameters or want to control the request in code. The Site-Shot tutorial shows a pattern of writing returned image bytes to temporary storage and passing a file path to later workflow steps. Verify current Pipedream file-handling guidance and the API provider’s response format before implementing that pattern. Do not assume the tutorial’s stated payload or file limits are current platform limits.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-call API can return an image or PDF, avoiding the need to run Chromium in your Pipedream step.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo says it accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Handle image data and credentials safely

  • Keep image bytes distinct from metadata. A screenshot is binary file data; a URL, status, or byte count is not the image. Configure downstream steps to receive a file or stored object in a format they support.
  • Use temporary storage only as a handoff. A temporary path can help move data between steps, but do not treat it as durable storage. Confirm retention and availability in Pipedream’s current documentation.
  • Protect API keys. Prefer connected-account credentials or the platform’s supported secret mechanism. Avoid logging full request URLs if credentials are passed as query parameters.
  • Limit capture scope. Only capture pages you are authorized to access. Avoid embedding private page content or sensitive URLs in logs or notifications.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The Node.js step keeps running The browser was not closed. Put await browser.close() in a finally block so it runs after success or failure, as Pipedream’s package page advises.
Browser launch or capture fails under load Workflow memory may be insufficient for the browser workload. Review Pipedream’s recommendation to increase workflow memory to 2 GB for best results with browser automation, then inspect the actual step error.
The screenshot is blank or misses late content Navigation may have completed before the page rendered the relevant content, or the target URL may not have loaded as expected. Check the URL and step output; wait for a meaningful selector or appropriate page condition before capturing.
A downstream step cannot use the image The workflow may be passing bytes where the next action expects a file, path, or URL. Inspect the action’s output type and use a supported storage or file handoff. Do not assume that returning raw image bytes as step output is interchangeable with a stored file.
The API action rejects the request The URL format, connected API key, output selection, or optional parameter may be invalid. Confirm the address begins with HTTP or HTTPS, reconnect or check the credential, and compare fields with the current integration documentation.
Capture works but delivery does not Capture and persistence/notification are separate workflow stages. Check the downstream step’s input mapping, destination permissions, and whether it expects a file or a link.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations

Browser automation puts Chromium work inside the workflow step, so memory use and cleanup matter. A hosted API moves the capture request to a provider, but its price, quotas, regional behavior, failure handling, and service terms vary; the cited Pipedream integration and tutorial do not establish those details for all providers. Compare the current plan and output behavior for the service you select rather than inferring cost or speed from the integration alone. For scheduled captures, test representative pages and decide what your workflow should do on a timeout, failed load, or missing output before enabling recurring runs.
