Automate website screenshots by submitting a CloudConvert API v2 job with a capture-website task, then exporting the resulting file. A typical workflow sends a URL and output format to the job endpoint, waits for completion by webhook or status polling, and downloads the export. This guide shows the job shape, a runnable cURL request, ways to handle asynchronous pages and results, and what to check when a capture fails.
How CloudConvert website screenshot jobs work
CloudConvert models an API job as one or more tasks. For a screenshot, a capture-website task renders a URL into a supported output such as PNG, JPG, or PDF. An export/url task can then expose the generated file as a downloadable URL. The operation reference describes the capture operation as converting a website to PDF or capturing a screenshot in PNG or JPG: CloudConvert capture operation.

The API’s generic base is https://api.cloudconvert.com/v2. The example below submits both tasks in one job to POST https://api.cloudconvert.com/v2/jobs. It illustrates the documented task structure; it has not been executed or independently tested here.

Store the key in server-side configuration or a secret manager. Do not put it in browser JavaScript, a public repository, or a client application: requests authenticate with a Bearer token.

Choose the API region in line with your data-location needs. CloudConvert says the generic endpoint selects a nearby processing region by default and documents region-specific endpoints for Germany (
eu-central) and Virginia, USA (us-east). Confirm current contractual and deployment requirements before selecting a region.
Submit a capture and export job with cURL
Set CLOUDCONVERT_API_KEY in your shell, then run this request. It creates a PNG from https://example.com and asks CloudConvert to make the result available through an export URL.

Use the current operation reference or CloudConvert Job Builder to confirm option names and valid combinations for the format and settings you need.
Get the result reliably
Use a completion webhook for recurring automation
For a production workflow, configure a completion webhook and have your service process the finished job when CloudConvert notifies it. Validate incoming webhook requests using CloudConvert’s current guidance, then retrieve the job’s export task and download or forward the resulting file. The CloudConvert quickstart recommends webhooks for completion handling.

Retrieve job status when you need a synchronous flow
For a small script or a workflow that must wait for the result before proceeding, retrieve the job status after creation and continue when the job is complete. Follow the response links or identifiers returned by the API rather than assuming a task finished immediately. Avoid tight polling loops; use a sensible delay and handle transient responses.
Save exports before their link expires
Export URLs shown in CloudConvert’s quickstart are valid for 24 hours. Download the file or export it to durable object storage promptly if it must remain available longer. Do not treat the temporary URL as permanent storage.

Output format
Choose PNG for a lossless raster image, JPG when a lossy image is acceptable, or PDF when the required result is a document. CloudConvert’s capture page covers PDF, PNG, and JPG use cases. Check the operation reference or Job Builder for format-specific parameters rather than assuming every screenshot option applies to every output.
Full page, viewport, and waiting
CloudConvert’s product page describes full-page capture as the default and shows viewport and zoom customization. It also describes waiting for a selector; its example uses a width of 1440 and wait_for_element: "body". These are product-page examples, not a guarantee that the same field names work for every output or operation configuration. Verify the current settings in the Website Screenshot API page and Job Builder.
If a page renders data after its initial HTML load, wait for a meaningful element that appears when the content is ready rather than relying only on a fixed delay. A selector wait can fail or wait unnecessarily if the selector is wrong or never appears, so test the target page and decide how your job should handle that condition.

Protected pages and browser state
The product page describes authorization headers for protected resources. Confirm how to supply the required headers in the current capture operation settings, and treat credentials as secrets. The reviewed documentation does not establish behavior for every login flow, site-specific anti-bot challenge, consent requirement, or access policy. SDK or CLI: CloudConvert lists SDKs for PHP, Node.js, Python, Ruby, Java, and .NET. An SDK can reduce request plumbing, but the underlying job and task design still applies.

No-code automation: CloudConvert names Zapier, Power Automate, Make, and n8n as integration routes. Check that the chosen connector exposes the capture settings and completion behavior your workflow requires.
For recurring captures, decide whether your application can wait for a synchronous result or should use a webhook, whether files need durable storage, and which processing region satisfies your requirements. Those operational choices matter as much as the screenshot format.

Cost, timing, and failure handling
Cost
CloudConvert’s Website Screenshot API page advertises a starting price of $0.008 per file. This is a vendor-published starting price, not a guaranteed quote for a particular plan or configuration. Check the current price calculator and plan terms against your expected volume and settings before estimating spend.
Timeouts and rate limits
The capture operation documentation gives a default task timeout of five hours. Treat that as a documented task timeout setting or ceiling, not a normal expected capture time. The API introduction says some endpoints have dynamic rate limits; job or task creation can return HTTP 429 with a Retry-After header. Respect that header and use bounded retries with backoff instead of repeatedly resubmitting immediately.
Troubleshooting

HTTP 401 or 403: check that the Bearer token is present, valid, and has the needed scopes. Keep the key on the server and rotate it if it may have been exposed.

HTTP 429: slow down and retry after the interval in

Job accepted, but no file URL is available yet: the job may still be processing. Wait for the completion webhook or retrieve status before reading the export task.

Export URL no longer works: the quickstart documents a 24-hour validity window for export URLs. Re-run the job if necessary and move results to durable storage before that window ends.

Screenshot is blank or missing dynamic content: inspect the target page’s load behavior and configure a suitable selector wait or viewport. Confirm the exact setting names for the output format in the current Job Builder or operation reference.

Job runs much longer than expected: check that the page is reachable and that any selector wait can actually complete. The five-hour documented default is not a target latency; set operational alerts and retry or fail according to your application’s needs.

Can I save a CloudConvert capture directly to durable storage?
Yes. The documented workflow can export the result onward; configure a storage export or download the file to your own storage before the temporary export URL expires.
Does CloudConvert automatically get past every CAPTCHA or anti-bot check?
No such guarantee is established by the cited documentation. Site-specific challenges and access policies need to be tested, and captures should be limited to pages you are authorized to access.
