You can loop authorized media files with FFmpeg on Debian and send the output to a YouTube Live event, but a looping command alone does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast. You also need an eligible YouTube channel, a protected stream key, compatible encoding settings, reliable upload capacity, and a plan to detect and recover from failures. This guide covers the self-hosted workflow and its limits.
What you need before starting
- A Debian computer or server that can remain powered on and connected to the internet. No universal CPU or memory minimum is established for this job; load depends on your source files and whether FFmpeg must encode them.
- FFmpeg installed from the Debian package repository for your Debian release.
- Video or audio files, plus any artwork or other media, that you have permission to use on YouTube.
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming and an upload connection with sustained capacity above your stream’s total bitrate.
A self-hosted Debian machine gives you direct control of the host. A VPS is another category of host if you prefer to run the process remotely; no specific provider or machine is established here as suitable. Either approach still depends on the host, network, credentials, and YouTube ingest remaining available.

Make sure YouTube Live is ready
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-streaming activation may take at least 24 hours. Check the channel well before the intended launch rather than discovering an eligibility delay at airtime. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance

- Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream event, then note the RTMPS stream URL and the stream key associated with that event. Use the values shown for the event you intend to broadcast.
- Keep the key private. Do not put a real key in a public configuration file, screenshot, shared shell history, or log. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which sends RTMP over TLS/SSL. Use the RTMPS ingest URL displayed in the Live Control Room rather than assuming an address from an old setup will still be appropriate. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance

Install FFmpeg and inspect the media
On Debian, install the distribution package and check that FFmpeg is available:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install ffmpeg
ffmpeg -versionInspect each input before building the output command. This example reports its streams and metadata:
ffprobe -hide_banner /path/to/authorized-media.mp4Confirm whether the file contains video, audio, or both, and note its resolution, frame rate, and audio format. The output mapping and encoding options must match what is present and what you want to send to YouTube. A compatible source may need less processing than a full transcode, but there is no general host specification that guarantees a particular file and output will run well.

FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 repeats an input indefinitely. The -re option reads file input at its native rate rather than sending it as quickly as the machine can process it. These are input options, so place them before the corresponding -i:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/authorized-media.mp4 [output options] [YouTube RTMPS destination]This is a schematic command, not a complete broadcast configuration. The output options must specify appropriate stream mapping, video and audio codecs, any needed filters, bitrate, keyframe interval, and the event’s RTMPS destination. Do not run it with bracketed explanatory text; replace the placeholders with values appropriate to your source and event.
A single-file loop repeats at the file boundary; it is not a scheduled playlist and does not provide a smooth transition between different tracks. Listen and watch across loop boundaries, and monitor the actual YouTube preview for gaps, abrupt joins, or unexpected silence.
Choose YouTube-compatible output settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. A straightforward SDR setup commonly uses H.264 video with AAC audio, but the right bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate. See YouTube’s encoder settings

These are YouTube recommendations from its encoder settings page accessed in 2026, not independent performance tests or guarantees. For other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs, use the corresponding entry in YouTube’s current settings rather than extrapolating from these two examples.

Set the encoder to CBR and configure a two-second keyframe interval where the chosen encoder exposes that setting. The precise FFmpeg options depend on the video codec, encoder implementation, and source; do not copy a generic option into a command without checking that it applies to your selected encoder. YouTube’s published limits and recommendations are the reference for the event’s output configuration.
Protect the stream key in your FFmpeg setup
The stream key is a credential: anyone with the associated ingest URL and key may be able to send video to that event. Avoid pasting the real value into a command that will remain in shell history or into a file accessible to other users. Restrict configuration-file permissions, keep secrets out of shared logs, and rotate the key in Live Control Room if it is disclosed.
When constructing the final FFmpeg command, use the exact RTMPS URL and key format expected by the event and encoder. YouTube’s instructions show where to retrieve them; because keys and ingest details are event-specific, this article does not supply a reusable real destination or key.

YouTube advises upload capacity at least 20% above the total bitrate of the stream, and recommends testing the upload bitrate before launch. If you send more than one feed, account for the total. Higher-resolution or higher-frame-rate output usually requires a higher selected bitrate, which in turn requires more sustained upload capacity. - Run an upload speed test on the same connection and at a time representative of normal use. YouTube Help says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.”
- Start with a private or otherwise appropriate test event if you need to validate settings without broadcasting publicly.
- Check the Live Control Room preview for audio, picture, and stream-health messages before relying on the stream.
- Watch the stream long enough to check loop boundaries and confirm that the host can sustain the selected output rather than merely start it.
- Confirm that the intended event is reachable by viewers and that your monitoring can alert you if the process or connection stops.
Plan for recovery, not just looping
-stream_loop -1 tells FFmpeg to repeat an input; it does not restart FFmpeg after a crash or repair a failed host, power loss, network outage, expired or reset key, or YouTube ingest problem. A process manager with a restart policy can help restart a failed local process, but it cannot by itself resolve those other failures. Plan separately for logs, alerts, process recovery, host and network reliability, and checking the YouTube preview after a reconnect.
The available YouTube guidance does not establish an uptime percentage or a guaranteed recovery time for a Debian radio stream. Test your own end-to-end setup and treat monitoring and recovery as operational requirements rather than assuming a loop is an uptime solution.
Will YouTube archive a 24/7 stream?
YouTube’s encoder workflow documentation says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that an uninterrupted broadcast lasting 24 hours or longer will become one complete archive. If an archive matters, plan a separate recording or shorter event segments and verify the resulting recordings instead of relying on one continuous event.
