Let Proxmox VE schedule and run the backups. Use Home Assistant as the optional orchestration, monitoring, and notification layer rather than as the backup engine. Proxmox already provides scheduled VM and LXC jobs, retention rules, storage targets, and restore workflows; Home Assistant can show their state and coordinate an external trigger when you have a specific reason to do so.
This design keeps long-running backup work inside the platform that owns the guests while still allowing automations such as “alert me when the nightly job fails” or “start a backup after a maintenance event.”

What the automation should look like
A dependable installation separates four responsibilities:
- Proxmox VE: selects guests, creates backups, applies schedules, and enforces retention.
- Backup storage: receives the files, whether that is configured NFS/file storage or a Proxmox Backup Server datastore.
- Home Assistant: observes Proxmox entities, exposes status in dashboards, sends alerts, and optionally starts a task through a documented REST or SSH bridge.
- You: verify failures and periodically prove that a backup can be restored.
Proxmox describes its integrated vzdump backups as full backups containing the virtual machine or container configuration and all data. That statement applies to the integrated Proxmox backup facility; Proxmox Backup Server (PBS) uses incremental transfers after the initial data has been sent.

Prerequisites
Proxmox and guests
- A reachable Proxmox VE node or cluster with the VMs and LXC containers you want to protect.
- A list of guest IDs and a decision about whether every guest or only selected guests belongs in the job.
- Current Proxmox documentation for the release you run, especially the API viewer and access-control pages if Home Assistant will initiate tasks.
Backup destination
Add and test a backup-capable storage target before creating a schedule. Proxmox supports file-oriented storage such as NFS and can integrate with PBS. A destination must have enough capacity for the retention policy and the change rate of your guests. A separate PBS host can add incremental transfers, optional client-side encryption, and live restore, but it also introduces a datastore and another system to operate.
Home Assistant access
For monitoring, install the built-in Proxmox VE integration and create a dedicated Home Assistant account in the Proxmox VE realm. Grant only the permissions required for the nodes, guests, and actions you intend to expose. The integration polls Proxmox data every 60 seconds, so its entities are suitable for state display and alerting rather than second-by-second progress control.
Configure the native Proxmox backup schedule
Start here even if you ultimately want Home Assistant involved. Native scheduling removes a dependency on Home Assistant being online at the exact minute a backup is due.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- In the Proxmox web interface, open Datacenter → Backup.
- Choose Add to create a job. Select the node or cluster scope, the storage target, and the guests to include. Use an explicit guest list when only certain VMs or containers should be protected.
- Set the calendar schedule. Choose a time when guest activity and storage traffic are acceptable, and avoid overlapping several large jobs on a small destination.
- Select the backup mode after considering each guest’s workload. Proxmox documents snapshot, suspend, and stop modes; their trade-offs are described below.
- Configure notification behavior and the retention fields that match your recovery objectives.
- Save the job, run a test backup, and inspect the task log and resulting archive on the destination.
The same class of jobs is represented by Proxmox’s /cluster/backup API endpoint. The scheduler executes configured jobs; it is not necessary to have Home Assistant call that endpoint for ordinary unattended operation. Proxmox also documents an option to repeat missed jobs when a node was offline or the scheduler was disabled at the planned time. Enable and test that behavior if a missed window must be recovered automatically.
Choose a backup mode deliberately
| Mode | Downtime | Consistency and use |
|---|---|---|
| Snapshot | Lowest downtime | Recommended general approach in Proxmox documentation, but application-level inconsistency remains possible for actively changing data. |
| Suspend | Guest is paused during the relevant phase | Described by Proxmox as a compatibility mode; evaluate the guest’s behavior before selecting it. |
| Stop | Guest is shut down for the backup | Highest consistency potential, at the cost of planned downtime. |
Database servers, transactional applications, and services with their own quiescing tools may need application-aware preparation in addition to the Proxmox mode. A successful task log proves that Proxmox wrote an archive; it does not prove that every application can recover to a transactionally ideal point.

Set retention rules that match recovery goals
Proxmox provides keep-last, keep-hourly, keep-daily, keep-weekly, keep-monthly, and keep-yearly settings. Rules are processed in order. Each subsequent rule applies to older backups that have not already been covered by an earlier rule, so the order changes the resulting set.
Design the policy from actual recovery questions: how many recent restore points are needed for an accidental deletion, how far back a corruption event might be discovered, and how much storage the destination can sustain. Then calculate the expected number of full archives for integrated vzdump backups, or the changed-data growth for PBS. Keep at least one backup outside the failure domain of the Proxmox host; a destination mounted on the same physical disk does not protect against that disk failing.

The Proxmox VE integration exposes nodes, VMs, and containers as Home Assistant entities and documents permission-gated control actions. It does not advertise a first-class “start backup job” action. Treat it as a visibility and permitted-control integration, not as a replacement for the Proxmox scheduler.
Useful dashboard information
- Whether each Proxmox node is available.
- Power and reachability state for the VMs and LXC containers in the backup set.
- The timestamp or state entity you use to represent the most recent successful backup, if your integration and version expose it.
- A separate indicator for the last failure, task error, or stale-backup condition gathered through your chosen bridge.
Because the integration refreshes about every 60 seconds and does not expose every storage type or every data field from the Proxmox API, build alerts around a reasonable freshness window rather than expecting instant completion events. A nightly job that has not produced a new success by the next morning is a more useful condition than a notification for every intermediate task phase.
When an external Home Assistant trigger is justified
Use a bridge only when timing must coordinate with something outside Proxmox: for example, a maintenance workflow, a home-energy event, or a single “backup now” control on a protected internal dashboard. The bridge should request a Proxmox task and then let Proxmox perform the long-running work.

RESTful Command
Home Assistant’s RESTful Command integration can send HTTP methods including POST and make the returned HTTP status and content available to an automation. This is a generic capability. The exact Proxmox request body, authentication method, privilege requirements, and endpoint for your release must be confirmed in the Proxmox API viewer and access-control documentation before you deploy it. Do not copy an unverified payload into production.
Design the automation as two phases:
- Send the short request that creates or starts the Proxmox task.
- Record the returned task identifier, then poll the appropriate task-status endpoint or consume a separately exposed status signal until the task succeeds or fails.
Set explicit timeouts, treat non-success HTTP responses as failures, and avoid assuming that an accepted request means the backup completed. A response can indicate that Proxmox accepted a task while the archive is still being written.
Shell Command and SSH
Home Assistant’s Shell Command integration can run a local command or an SSH-based bridge. Each process is terminated after 60 seconds, so it must not wait synchronously for a full backup. On Home Assistant OS, the command runs inside the homeassistant container, not as the host system’s root account.
If you use SSH, store persistent keys under /config/.ssh, verify the Proxmox host key, and restrict the remote account. Invoke a short script that requests the Proxmox task, writes the task ID to a controlled location or returns it, and exits. A second automation can poll status. Never use an unrestricted root key merely because it makes the first test easier.
Track asynchronous jobs correctly
A backup can run for minutes or hours depending on guest size, changed data, compression, storage throughput, and contention. Home Assistant should not block while waiting. A robust flow records:

Furthermore, the D2-320 incorporates a brand new Push-lock unique design from TerraMaster, which automatically locks the hard drive tray when you insert the hard drive, preventing the hard drive from falling out or disconnecting
- The guest or job requested.
- The request time and returned Proxmox task identifier.
- The HTTP or SSH request result.
- The final task state and error text.
- The timestamp of the newest verified archive.
Use a timeout longer than the expected polling interval but finite enough to alert on a stuck task. If polling stops because Home Assistant restarts, recover by querying Proxmox for the task or by checking the job log and destination rather than launching a duplicate backup immediately.
Storage choices and their trade-offs
| Destination or approach | Best fit | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Proxmox scheduled job to configured file storage | Regular unattended VM and LXC backups with few moving parts | Native scheduling and retention are built in; resilience depends on the file storage and its failure domain. |
| Home Assistant Proxmox integration | Dashboards, guest visibility, and documented permission-gated control | Convenient entity access, but no documented backup-job action and incomplete exposure of some storage data. |
| Home Assistant REST or SSH bridge | Custom timing or cross-system orchestration | Requires version-specific API validation, least-privilege credentials, asynchronous task tracking, and failure handling; Shell Command has a 60-second limit. |
| Proxmox Backup Server | Dedicated backup infrastructure and efficient repeat transfers | Requires a PBS host and datastore to configure and maintain; offers incremental transfers, optional client-side encryption, and VM live restore. |
PBS live restore can start a VM while the remaining data continues copying in the background. That can shorten service recovery time, but you still need to validate application behavior while blocks are being fetched and to protect the PBS datastore itself.

Alert on explicit task failures
Send a high-priority notification when the Proxmox task ends in an error. Include the guest, job, task ID, destination, and error text so that the message is actionable. Do not clear the alert merely because the next scheduled run is queued.
Alert on missed freshness
Define a maximum acceptable age for each backup set. If no successful result appears inside that window, notify even when Proxmox reports that the node is online. This catches disabled jobs, full destinations, broken mounts, permission changes, and silent notification failures.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAlert on infrastructure symptoms
Watch for a destination becoming unavailable, a PBS datastore approaching capacity, a Proxmox node going offline, or a guest being excluded from the job after a configuration change. These checks complement, rather than replace, reading the task log.

Security safeguards
- Create a dedicated Proxmox identity for Home Assistant and grant only the node, guest, storage, and task permissions it actually needs.
- Prefer API tokens or narrowly scoped accounts where supported by your Proxmox release; do not embed a broad root password in Home Assistant configuration.
- Keep the Proxmox API on a trusted network. Do not expose it directly to the public internet.
- Use HTTPS with certificate verification for REST calls. Treat disabling verification as a temporary diagnostic action, not a design.
- Protect Home Assistant secrets, SSH private keys, and returned task data with the same care as Proxmox credentials.
- Limit an SSH bridge’s command set and destination host. Verify known-host keys instead of accepting any host key.
- Review permissions after adding guests, nodes, or storage so an account does not silently gain more access than intended.
Test the complete recovery path
- Run a native Proxmox backup manually and confirm the archive appears on the intended destination.
- Run the Home Assistant notification or bridge path with a harmless test, confirming that credentials, network reachability, and response handling work.
- Allow a scheduled run to complete and verify that the recorded success reflects the final task state, not merely an accepted request.
- Perform a restore of a non-production VM or container into an isolated name or network. Check boot, disks, network configuration, services, and application data.
- Document the restore steps, required credentials, destination availability, and the person responsible for responding to an alert.
- Repeat restore testing after major Proxmox, PBS, storage, or guest changes.
A backup policy is incomplete until someone can restore under pressure. For critical services, record how to recover when the original Proxmox node is unavailable and when Home Assistant is unavailable; neither system should be a single point of failure for access to the archives.
Common design mistakes
Using Home Assistant as the scheduler
An automation that fires at a time and waits for completion adds dependencies without improving the backup engine. Keep the recurring schedule in Datacenter → Backup unless an external event genuinely determines timing.
Assuming the integration has a backup button
The documented integration exposes Proxmox entities and permission-gated controls, but it does not document a first-class start-backup action. Use a validated REST or SSH bridge only when needed.
Waiting for completion inside Shell Command
The 60-second process limit makes this unreliable for large guests. Return immediately after task creation and poll the Proxmox task separately.
Choosing snapshot mode without checking applications
Low downtime is valuable, but a filesystem-consistent snapshot is not automatically application-consistent. Test restore behavior for databases and other stateful services.
Keeping every archive forever
Retention rules should express recovery objectives and available capacity. Processed in order, they can retain a useful mix of recent and historical points without uncontrolled growth.
Testing only the “green” notification
Simulate a failed destination, invalid credential, or stopped node and confirm that Home Assistant reports the failure. Then restore an archive rather than stopping at a successful task log.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A practical operating pattern
- Configure and test a Proxmox native job for each backup set.
- Choose snapshot, suspend, or stop per workload, documenting the downtime decision.
- Apply ordered retention rules and place the destination outside the Proxmox host’s primary failure domain.
- Install the Home Assistant Proxmox integration with a dedicated least-privilege account for dashboards and basic visibility.
- Create a stale-backup alert based on the last verified success and a separate alert for task failures.
- Add a RESTful Command or SSH bridge only for a defined cross-system trigger; validate its exact endpoint and permissions against the installed Proxmox version.
- Poll asynchronous tasks, preserve task IDs and error text, and never interpret an accepted request as completion.
- Exercise a restore on a schedule and update the runbook when infrastructure or guest versions change.
This arrangement gives Proxmox responsibility for reliable backup execution while Home Assistant adds the context, notifications, and cross-system control that a homelab or small private cloud may need.
