Choose what belongs in folders and what belongs in properties
Folders are useful when a note’s location should determine where it lives. Properties are better for information you may want to filter or query across different locations, such as a note type, status, date, or tags. Keeping those roles distinct makes automation easier to reason about: a folder can be a reliable rule input, while properties describe the note.

Obsidian supports text, list, number, checkbox, date, date-and-time, and tag property types. Property types are associated with property names across a vault, which helps keep the same field consistent from note to note. Templates can add properties to a new note, and Obsidian merges template properties with properties already present rather than simply discarding the note’s existing properties. Use a template when a note type repeatedly needs the same fields—for example, a meeting note that always needs a date and attendees, or a project note with a status. This handles repeatable structure without requiring a plugin or putting every note into a rigid folder scheme.
Apply metadata automatically when folder location is meaningful
Folder Auto Properties applies configured frontmatter to new Markdown notes created in a chosen folder. Rules can be configured from a folder’s context menu or in the plugin settings, and nested subfolder rules are supported. The listing says list and tag values are merged rather than replacing existing values; check how other property types behave before relying on them to preserve existing data.

Its documentation gives conflicting compatibility information: the instructions state a minimum of Obsidian v1.1.1, while the compatibility field lists Obsidian 1.12.7+. The directory page reported plugin version 2.0.4 and an update three months before October 11, 2026. Check the current plugin listing and your installed Obsidian version before installing or depending on a rule.

MetaEdit is aimed at editing metadata values, including reusable values entered through prompts and bulk changes to a folder or selection of notes. Its documentation describes explicit skip, merge, or overwrite handling, as well as tag editing and automation helpers for task counts and Kanban cards. These are plugin-documented capabilities, not independently tested results.

The MetaEdit documentation says Obsidian 1.12.7 or newer is required and describes the plugin as free and open source. Its page was last updated July 4, 2026. Review its documentation and choose the batch handling option deliberately: skip avoids changing an existing value, merge combines values where supported, and overwrite replaces them.
Order frontmatter when you maintain notes
Property Organizer applies a per-folder property order to matching Markdown files, including files in subfolders. Properties named in the order move to the front; unlisted properties remain afterward in their existing relative order. This is for maintaining frontmatter order, not sorting notes into folders.

It does not sort live when a note is created, edited, renamed, or moved. Processing is on demand or can be configured at vault startup. The listing also warns that malformed YAML is skipped and that rewriting YAML can normalize formatting or fail to preserve comments inside frontmatter. The directory page reports version 1.3.0 and compatibility with Obsidian 1.13.0+. Check the current Property Organizer listing before use, especially if your frontmatter contains comments or unusual formatting.

Advanced Note Mover can route files using criteria such as tags, frontmatter properties, filenames, dates, and links. Its listing describes destination previews, move history with undo, and optional movement of attachments while preserving relative paths. These safeguards are useful when a rule affects existing notes, but a preview should still be checked for the actual destinations you intend.
The plugin supports on-edit and periodic triggers, both disabled by default. Keep them off while defining and checking rules; enable them only when you understand how destinations and attachment movement will behave. Put the pieces together cautiously
- Define the structure. Decide which information should be properties and which folder locations have a dependable meaning. Keep the initial schema small enough to use consistently.
- Make templates for recurring note types. Use native templates to establish fields for notes you create repeatedly, and confirm that the merged properties suit your existing capture habits.
- Add folder rules only where location is a reliable signal. Test Folder Auto Properties on new notes in a limited set of folders, checking that existing list and tag values are preserved as intended.
- Clean up older metadata in batches. Use MetaEdit on a selection or folder and choose skip, merge, or overwrite based on the existing values. Inspect the result before widening the change.
- Separate property order from file placement. Use Property Organizer if consistent frontmatter order matters; use a mover only when files need to go to different folders.
- Preview move rules before enabling automation. Start with a small group, check each destination and attachment behavior, and review move history. Turn on on-edit or periodic triggers only after the rules behave as intended.
