How the workflow works
- Authenticate with the site, using its browser login flow or a suitable supported authentication API.
- Confirm login succeeded by checking a reliable signed-in indicator or destination URL.
- Save Playwright’s browser state to a protected file.
- Have the scheduled job create a browser context using that state, open the page to capture, and take the screenshot.
- Protect the state file and screenshot according to the sensitivity of the account and page.
Playwright documents saving authentication state after login and reusing it in later contexts. The exact state a site needs depends on its authentication implementation; it may involve cookies, local storage, IndexedDB, or other supported state. Choose how to authenticate
Sign in through the UI
Use UI automation when you need to follow the site’s actual browser login flow. Selectors and steps are site-specific, so replace the example selectors in your script with stable locators for the target site. If the login requires an interaction that cannot safely run unattended, do not assume a saved state will make that step disappear.

Playwright also describes authenticating through an API request when the application provides a suitable endpoint, then saving and reusing that state. Use only an endpoint intended for this purpose and confirm the resulting state works in a browser context. This can avoid brittle UI steps, but it is not an option for every site.

Runnable Playwright example
The following Node.js example separates setup from the scheduled capture. Run the setup command interactively once to create the state file; the scheduled command reuses it. Install Playwright with npm install -D playwright and install the browser with npx playwright install chromium.
1. Save state after successful login
Create save-auth.mjs and adapt the URL, selectors, and success check to the site. The sample uses UI login; retrieve the password from your environment or an approved secret store rather than writing it into the script.

Create capture.mjs. The scheduled run opens a new context with the saved state, checks that authentication still holds, then saves a full-page PNG.

await browser.close();Change the path and heading check to match the target page. A destination URL alone may not prove that protected content loaded; combine it with a stable signed-in signal when practical.
3. Keep the state out of Git
Add the authentication directory to .gitignore before creating state:
playwright/.auth/Playwright specifically recommends keeping generated authentication state in an ignored directory. Do not commit it, print it into logs, or treat it as harmless because it contains no plaintext password.
Schedule the capture safely
A scheduler must invoke node capture.mjs at the required time, but the appropriate scheduler, secret store, filesystem permissions, and retention policy depend on where the job runs. Configure that environment to provide only the access the job needs and restrict access to both the state file and screenshot. Do not put passwords or tokens in command-line arguments if your environment records process arguments.

The authentication setup and capture are separate from scheduling: choose a host-specific scheduler only after deciding where the browser will run. If the scheduled task cannot access the saved state securely, use an approved environment-specific mechanism rather than copying the file into source control or a broadly accessible workspace.
Capture options that affect the result
Playwright’s Page screenshot API supports a file path and options that change the image. Choose them to match what the scheduled report needs:
- Viewport or full page: omit
fullPagefor the current viewport; setfullPage: trueto capture the full scrollable page. - Format and scale: select the documented image type and scale when file size or pixel density matters.
- Masking: mask selected locators if specific on-page details should not appear. Masking works only when the correct elements are selected; it is not a general guarantee that private data has been redacted.
- Styling: a screenshot stylesheet can alter or hide dynamic content during capture. Use this only when changing the rendered page is acceptable for the intended record.
A screenshot can expose private information even when no password is present. Store outputs somewhere access-controlled and set retention to fit the page’s sensitivity.

Saved state is a credential in practice
Playwright warns: “The browser state file may contain sensitive cookies and headers that could be used to impersonate you or your test account.” Treat the file as account access, limit who and what can read it, and use an appropriately limited account where possible.

Sessions can expire
Stored state may stop working and need to be regenerated. The job should detect a login redirect or missing signed-in signal, report failure, and avoid publishing a login-page image as a successful capture. The refresh procedure depends on the site’s authentication rules.
Unattended login is not guaranteed
MFA, passkeys, bot controls, federated identity, session expiry, or site terms can change the workflow or make unattended capture unsuitable. Playwright’s storage-state API describes support for virtual WebAuthn credentials, but that does not prove a particular site’s passkey flow will work on a schedule. Confirm the site’s permitted authentication method and test the specific account and runtime.
Budget for operational failure modes
The browser must launch, reach the site, retain a valid session, and load the target content before capture. A timeout or failed signed-in check should be treated as a failed job—not as a valid screenshot. The reviewed Playwright documentation describes browser authentication and screenshot functions, not a particular scheduler, secret vault, uptime guarantee, or retention period; choose those controls for the deployment you operate.
