To automate a login page with Selenium WebDriver, open the authorized test site, wait for its username and password fields, enter test-only credentials, click the login button, and wait for a reliable sign that authentication succeeded. The selectors and success condition must match your application; there is no universal login-page selector.
What Selenium login automation should verify
Selenium WebDriver controls a browser through a language binding and a browser-specific driver. Its workflow is useful when a test needs to exercise the user-facing authentication path—not merely begin with an already authenticated session.

- For an authentication test, cover the form interaction and a meaningful result such as an account menu, authenticated-page element, or expected navigation.
- Use test-environment credentials stored through your project’s approved secret or configuration mechanism. Do not put real user credentials in shared source code or logs.
- Use a distinct success condition from the login button itself. A successful click only proves that Selenium clicked; it does not establish that the application authenticated the user.
Install and prepare the test
Install the Selenium binding for your language, a supported browser, and the corresponding driver implementation. These are separate setup components: the driver communicates between Selenium and the browser. Use an authorized test environment and credentials reserved for it.

Adapt the selectors to the actual DOM
By.NAME works only if the controls have matching name attributes. Other common locator choices include an element ID or a CSS selector. Prefer stable attributes intended for tests, such as a dedicated test ID, over fragile selectors tied to styling or page layout.
The example waits for the submit button to be clickable, then clicks it. Click the application’s actual login control; do not assume every form uses a button with type='submit'. After clicking, replace the sample account-menu selector with a condition that is specific to the authenticated state being tested.
Make cleanup unconditional
The finally block quits the browser even if a wait or assertion fails. This prevents a failed test from leaving its WebDriver session running.

Wait for the right state
A navigation command finishing does not guarantee that a JavaScript-driven page has rendered its interactive controls. The document’s readyState describes document loading; an application can still add or reveal elements afterward.
Use explicit waits for the condition needed at each step. Selenium’s expected conditions can wait for element presence or visibility, visible text, a title, or clickability. For a login flow, that commonly means waiting for visible fields before typing and a stable authenticated indicator after submitting.
- Avoid fixed sleeps as the main strategy. A sleep that is too short can still fail; one that is too long slows every run.
- Do not mix implicit and explicit waits. Their combined timing can lead to unpredictable timeouts. Choose explicit waits for the states your test needs.
- Choose a meaningful post-login signal. Prefer a stable element or expected destination that indicates the application accepted the login, rather than simply waiting for the submit control to disappear.
When to use UI login—and when not to
Drive the browser through login when the test is about authentication behavior: for example, form validation, redirects, or a user-visible login flow. If a test only needs an authenticated starting state to test some other feature, prepare that state through another mechanism, such as an API login followed by setting the appropriate cookie. Selenium recommends avoiding repeated UI login as generic test setup because establishing application state another way can improve test speed and stability.

Troubleshoot common failures
Timed out waiting for a field
Check the current page and DOM first: confirm navigation reached the expected login page, the locator matches the rendered control, and the field is visible. If the page renders asynchronously, wait for visibility rather than assuming navigation completion means the form is ready.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Confirm the element is visible and enabled, then verify that the locator selects the intended control rather than a hidden duplicate. If the form is inside a frame, switch WebDriver to the correct browsing context before locating or interacting with its controls.
The click succeeds but the test times out after login
Check whether the application rejected the credentials, requires an additional authentication step, or redirects to a different destination. Then update the post-submit wait to match a real, stable success state in that flow; a button click by itself is not proof of authentication.

The run is slow or has inconsistent timeouts
Replace arbitrary sleeps with explicit condition-based waits and avoid combining implicit and explicit waits. If login is only setup for an unrelated test, use an approved programmatic state-setup path instead of repeating the browser flow.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Selenium bypass a CAPTCHA or multi-factor authentication step?
This example does not bypass either. Use an authorized test flow and an application-provided test arrangement for any additional authentication step.
Does this Python example work unchanged with every browser or login page?
No. It uses Chrome and illustrative selectors; the browser setup, field locators, and authenticated-state check must match your environment.
