Website compliance monitoring is a recurring process: identify the rules and commitments that apply to your organization, map them to the site’s features and data flows, assign owners, check controls and evidence, fix problems, and verify the fixes. The exact obligations depend on where you operate and serve people, your sector, services, and actual data practices. A general checklist can reveal gaps, but it cannot determine every legal duty for your business.
How do I monitor my website for compliance?
Use an operational loop, not a one-time launch checklist. Start with what your organization is required or has committed to do; connect each obligation to the relevant site feature, data, vendor, and person; then set a review schedule and a way to verify remediation. Keep dated records so you can show what was checked, what was found, and what changed.

- Define scope. Record where the business operates and serves customers, whether it is public or private, its sector, the online services it provides, and the personal or sensitive information it collects.
- Map the site and its data flows. Inventory forms, checkout, accounts, analytics, advertising tags, cookies, embedded media, support tools, and integrations. Note what each collects, why, where it goes, who can access it, and how long it is kept.
- Identify applicable obligations. Separate legal requirements from contractual commitments, voluntary standards, and internal policies. Applicability can depend on jurisdiction, audience, processing, and business category; get qualified legal or compliance advice when needed.
- Assign owners and proof. For each obligation, name an accountable owner, review interval, evidence location, escalation route, and remediation deadline.
- Check, record, and fix. Run relevant reviews, log findings with risk and ownership, remediate, and retest. Keep the dated evidence and closure record.
- Repeat on schedule and after change. Reassess when a site feature, vendor, data practice, audience, or relevant rule changes—not only during an annual review.
This approach reflects the accountability and review principles in GDPR Articles 24 and 32 for organizations and processing within the regulation’s scope: appropriate measures should be demonstrable, reviewed and updated as necessary, and security effectiveness regularly tested or evaluated. GDPR does not apply to every business merely because it has a website.

Start with what the site actually does rather than a generic compliance checklist. For each collection point and service, document the purpose, data involved, access, storage, safeguards, retention and deletion, vendors, and incident response arrangements.
#1 Best Overall
- Forms and accounts: What fields are collected, whether they are necessary, who can see submissions, and how records are deleted when no longer needed.
- Checkout and payments: What information passes through the site, which provider handles it, what contractual and security responsibilities are assigned, and who responds to an incident.
- Cookies, analytics, and advertising: Which tags and embedded services load, what information they collect or share, and whether the public-facing privacy information matches actual practice.
- Hosting and administration: Software maintenance, patching, TLS, backups and recovery, administrative access, multi-factor authentication availability, and security contacts.
- Accessibility: Whether people with disabilities can use important content and services, and how users can report an access problem.
- Vendors and integrations: What each provider can access, relevant contractual commitments, security evidence, change notifications, and incident escalation arrangements.
FTC small-business guidance recommends collecting only what is needed, securing it, and disposing of it securely. It also suggests checking whether the host includes current TLS, keeping software patched, and reviewing SPF, DKIM, and DMARC when using the business email domain. These are useful security checks, not a complete legal inventory for every company.
Does my business website have to meet WCAG?
Do not treat one WCAG answer or deadline as universal. In its Title III guidance, the U.S. Department of Justice says the ADA applies to goods and services businesses offer online to the public, while also noting that it has not issued detailed technical standards for private businesses. The guidance describes flexibility in how organizations ensure their online services are accessible; it does not mean the accessibility obligation disappears. DOJ identifies WCAG and Section 508 as helpful references and gives examples such as sufficient color contrast, not relying on color alone to convey meaning, and providing a way to report accessibility issues.
For covered state and local government content and apps, the separate ADA Title II rule specifies WCAG 2.1 Level AA. DOJ’s guide, following the April 20, 2026 interim final rule, reports these compliance dates:

| Covered public entity | Reported deadline |
|---|---|
| State and local government entities with populations of 50,000 or more | April 26, 2027 |
| Smaller public entities and special districts | April 26, 2028 |
These Title II dates do not apply to private businesses. The DOJ Title III resource is agency guidance and says it does not have the force of law; use it to understand DOJ’s interpretation and practical recommendations, not as a substitute for applicable law or legal advice. A scan can help find technical issues, but a scan alone does not establish that a site is accessible or legally compliant. Include user feedback and appropriate manual review in the monitoring process.
How often should I check my website’s compliance?
Set intervals according to the obligation, risk, and pace of change. Some checks belong in routine operational maintenance; others should be triggered by a new feature, vendor, or data flow. GDPR Articles 24 and 32 call for review and updates as necessary and regular testing or evaluation of security measures where the regulation applies, but they do not provide one universal website audit interval for every organization.
- At a planned cadence: Review access permissions, vendor records, retention practices, security controls, policies, accessibility issues, and open remediation items at intervals appropriate to their risk.
- After material changes: Repeat relevant checks when adding a tracking tag or integration, changing forms or checkout, redesigning a site, moving hosts, changing data retention, or serving a new audience.
- After an incident or significant finding: Review the affected control, escalation process, and evidence; then verify that corrective actions work.
- When obligations change: Reassess scope and deadlines when a relevant law, regulation, contract, or organizational commitment changes.
Write down the actual schedule and the trigger events. “We check periodically” is difficult to operate or demonstrate; an owner, due date, evidence location, and escalation path make the review actionable.
What should I ask my web host about security?
Ask questions that connect the host’s responsibilities to your own site and data. Record the answers and any supporting evidence rather than treating a vendor’s general security claim as proof that all of your obligations are met.
- Who maintains the site software and applies security patches, and how are maintenance responsibilities divided?
- Does the hosting service include current TLS? How is data stored and protected, and who can access it?
- Are backups available, how are they protected, and how would restoration work if the site or data were lost?
- Is multi-factor authentication available for administrator accounts, and how should access be reviewed?
- Who should we contact about suspicious activity or a possible incident, and how is that issue escalated?
- How will the host notify us of changes that affect our security responsibilities or the services we rely on?
Also review email authentication for the business domain—SPF, DKIM, and DMARC—if you use it for business email. The FTC guidance recommends checking these practices, but the answers needed for a particular business depend on its systems, data, and risk.
How should I monitor vendors and website changes?
Keep a current list of hosting, payment, analytics, advertising, email, customer-support, and accessibility vendors. For each one, record its role, what data or systems it can access, relevant contractual commitments, security evidence, how changes are communicated, and how incidents are escalated.
Rank #4
Revisit the entry when the vendor changes its service or access, and whenever your site adds or alters a tag, integration, checkout, form, or data-retention practice. A redesign or host migration is also a useful trigger to confirm that the inventory still matches the live site. Assign a person to update the record; otherwise a list can become stale while the site’s data flows change.

Preserve dated records that show both the check and what happened next. Evidence should be organized so an owner can retrieve it and connect it to a requirement or control.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Current and prior versions of relevant policies and notices.
- Access reviews, security checks, accessibility test results, and vendor or host security questionnaires.
- Incident records, decisions, escalation steps, and remediation tickets.
- For each finding: the issue, risk, accountable owner, due date, mitigation, retest result, and closure date.
A dated screenshot can help preserve what a page looked like at a particular moment, but it cannot by itself show whether the underlying data practices are accurate, whether a service is accessible to all users, or whether legal requirements are met. Treat visual captures as supporting evidence alongside the relevant records and tests.

If you need a dated visual capture as one part of your evidence, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF from one API request. For example, this cURL request saves a capture of the target page as a WebP file. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
Equivalent Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Equivalent Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and other MCP clients. It is a capture tool, not a compliance assessment: use it to retain visual evidence, not to certify legal compliance.
There are 1,000 screenshots per month on the free plan with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Learn about ScreenshotNeo or sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
How do I choose monitoring tools and close findings?
Choose tools around the work they support, not the label “compliance.” Compare the areas covered—accessibility, privacy, security, records, or vendors—the review frequency and change triggers, whether checks are automated or manual, how evidence and remediation are handled, fit with your actual obligations, and the staffing and cost required.
Automated tools can flag issues and help repeat checks, but they cannot decide whether a law applies to your organization, resolve every contextual question, or replace appropriate manual and expert review. Buying software or a service does not itself establish compliance.
For each finding, record its risk, owner, due date, mitigation, and verification. Escalate issues that affect access to critical services, sensitive information, or legal deadlines. Retest after a fix and retain the proof of closure. Monitoring reduces blind spots and helps an organization correct problems; it is not a guarantee that the business is “fully compliant.”
Which requirements are category-specific?
Some rules apply only to particular kinds of organizations or incidents. For example, the FTC Safeguards Rule covers certain financial institutions under FTC jurisdiction, not every small business with a website. The FTC’s breach-reporting amendments for certain incidents took effect in May 2024. Check the rule and determine coverage before treating it as an obligation for your business. Similarly, GDPR applicability depends on the organization’s territorial and processing circumstances, and the examples here do not enumerate every U.S. state privacy law, sector-specific law, national implementation, or exception.
