r2modman can update a Thunderstore profile, but it is not a guaranteed headless updater for an unattended V Rising server. The dependable approach is to maintain a named server profile, stop the server, back up its BepInEx folder, configuration and saves, update only compatible packages, copy the resulting files into the server’s BepInEx tree, then restart and inspect the log before players reconnect.

For unattended operation, place that sequence inside a platform-specific scheduled job—such as a systemd timer, Windows Task Scheduler task, Docker entrypoint or hosting-panel task. There is no single platform-neutral V Rising update command established for every installation, so the stop, backup, deployment and verification stages must be adapted to your host.

What “auto-update” means for a V Rising server
People use “auto-update” to describe two different jobs:
- Profile maintenance: a desktop mod manager checks Thunderstore packages, downloads newer versions and updates a profile.
- Unattended server deployment: a scheduled process stops the dedicated server, creates a rollback copy, installs approved files, starts the server and reports failures.
r2modman is designed for the first job. Its documented workflow covers browsing, installing and updating Thunderstore packages in profiles. That does not make it a server daemon that can safely replace files in a running, remote V Rising instance. Treat the profile as the source of truth, and use a separate deployment routine for the server.

An update can also be technically successful while making the server unusable: a package may target clients only, a dependency may change, or a V Rising patch may make the current BepInEx and plugin combination incompatible. Automation should therefore remove repetitive copying, not remove compatibility checks or rollback protection.
Filter packages before you automate anything
Thunderstore’s V Rising catalog separates packages into Client, Server and Tools categories. Use those tags as your first compatibility filter.

A package marked for the server belongs in the dedicated server’s BepInEx plugin and configuration structure, subject to its own installation instructions. These are the packages an automated server deployment may install.
Client packages
A client-only package belongs in each player’s game installation, not on the dedicated server. Copying every file from a desktop profile to the server can load an inappropriate assembly or create confusing startup errors.
Packages for both sides
Some functionality requires matching components on the server and clients. Keep the package name, version and dependency set aligned. Updating one side while leaving the other on an older release is a common cause of connection failures or missing features.

Tools and loaders
Tools are not automatically server plugins. BepInExPack V Rising supplies the loader foundation, while tools such as ServerLaunchFix address particular launch arrangements, including enabling server mods in a client installation. Follow the package’s stated target rather than inferring it from its name.
Create separate, reproducible profiles
Start with profiles that make the intended deployment unambiguous. A single mixed profile is difficult to audit and easy to copy incorrectly.
- Open r2modman and select V Rising.
- Create a dedicated profile with a descriptive name such as
vrising-server-production. Record the profile name and the V Rising build it is intended to support. - Install the exact server packages and their dependencies. Do not add client-only packages to this profile.
- When players need client components, create a second profile such as
vrising-client-production. Add only the client or shared packages required by the server setup. - Record every package version before the first deployment. Export or otherwise preserve the profile’s manifest using the facilities available in your manager and host.
The profile is a versioned input, not a live mirror of the server. Keep the server’s deployed files and configuration under a dated backup scheme so you can identify which profile revision produced a particular installation.
Prepare the server before the first automated update
Confirm the loader and directory layout
Install BepInExPack V Rising according to the V Rising installation guidance for your server type. On first boot, BepInEx may take time to generate its folders and configuration files. Do not assume an empty directory means the installation failed; allow that initial generation to finish and inspect the log.
Locate the server’s BepInEx directory, its configuration files and its save-data directory. The exact paths vary with the operating system, hosting panel and installation method. Your automation should use those confirmed paths rather than a hard-coded path copied from another host.

Establish a safe backup target
Before changing packages, create a dated rollback set containing:
- The complete BepInEx directory, including plugins, configuration and generated files.
- The server’s configuration files outside BepInEx, if your installation keeps any there.
- All V Rising save data and world files.
- The package-version record or profile manifest used for the deployment.
Store the rollback copy outside the live server directory. A generic “copy all updated files” operation is not a backup: it can overwrite the only known-good files and leave no clean point to restore.
Test a manual cycle first
Run one update by hand before scheduling it. This exposes incorrect paths, permissions and stop/start behavior while you can watch the console. Only automate after you can demonstrate that the server stops fully, files are replaced in the intended BepInEx tree, the server starts once and the log reaches a normal ready state.
Safe update procedure
Use this sequence for every package update, whether started manually or by a scheduler.
- Announce or schedule downtime. Updating plugins requires the server to be offline. Choose a maintenance window long enough for backup, file transfer, first-boot generation and verification.
- Prevent concurrent runs. Acquire a lock, use the scheduler’s single-instance option or apply an equivalent host control. Two jobs must never update the same directory simultaneously.
- Stop V Rising completely. Wait for the process to exit and for the host to release open files. A restart command that returns before shutdown is complete is not sufficient.
- Create the dated rollback copy. Back up BepInEx, configuration and saves before downloading or copying new packages. Include the profile/version record in the same backup set.
- Review available updates in the server profile. Update packages tagged for the server or for both client and server. Exclude client-only packages. Read dependency changes rather than accepting an indiscriminate “update all” operation.
- Resolve the profile on a controlled machine. Let r2modman download the selected package versions and dependencies. Keep the resulting plugin and configuration files separate from save data.
- Deploy only the required files. Transfer the resolved plugin and configuration files into the server’s BepInEx tree using your host’s file-transfer method. Do not copy the entire desktop profile over the server and never replace saves with profile contents.
- Start the server once. Allow BepInEx time to generate or validate files, especially after a loader installation or structural change.
- Inspect the startup log. Look for loader initialization, each expected plugin loading, dependency-resolution errors and exceptions. Do not reopen the server to players until the log is clean enough for your normal acceptance criteria.
- Run a controlled session. Connect with the matching client profile, exercise the mod features that matter to your community and keep the rollback copy until that session completes successfully.
Turn the procedure into an unattended job
The scheduler is only an orchestrator. It should call host-specific actions for stopping the server, backing up files, obtaining the approved profile output, deploying it, starting the server and checking the result.

Required stages
- Acquire a lock so a second invocation exits without touching the installation.
- Confirm the server process is running or in an expected state, then issue the host’s stop action.
- Wait for a real process exit, with a timeout and an alert path if shutdown hangs.
- Create a uniquely dated backup and verify that the backup contains BepInEx, configuration and saves.
- Run the profile update step on the machine that has r2modman or another approved package-resolution method.
- Transfer only the selected plugin and configuration files to the confirmed BepInEx destination.
- Start the server and wait for the normal startup period.
- Scan the log for loader, dependency and plugin exceptions. Mark the run failed if critical errors appear.
- Release the lock and notify the operator with the package versions, backup location and startup result.
Adapting it to common hosts
On Linux, a systemd timer can invoke a wrapper that controls the service and records output. On Windows, Task Scheduler can launch an equivalent wrapper under an account with access to the server files. A container deployment can place the workflow in an entrypoint, while a hosting panel may provide separate scheduled, backup and restart tasks. The labels and commands differ by platform; do not paste a command intended for one host into another without checking its process, volume and permission model.
Schedule the job outside active play, and make failure visible. A task that silently exits after downloading packages can leave the server stopped or partially updated. Preserve the wrapper’s output and the server log for each run so you can correlate a package change with a startup error.

After updating a package used on both sides, distribute the matching profile or a precise package/version list to players. Tell players which profile revision to select and when to update it. Do not ask them to “update everything” independently: that can pull a newer dependency than the server has approved.
For client-only features, update the client profile without copying those files to the server. For shared features, treat the server profile and client profile as a coordinated release. If the server starts normally but clients cannot connect, compare package names, versions and dependencies before changing unrelated files.
Pause automation after a V Rising patch
A game update can invalidate a previously working BepInEx and mod combination. When V Rising itself patches:
- Disable the scheduled deployment temporarily.
- Keep the last known-good server backup and profile unchanged.
- Check that the loader and critical server packages support the new game build.
- Test the updated combination while the server remains closed to normal players.
- Re-enable scheduled updates only after one successful test session.
This pause is important even when Thunderstore reports package updates. A newer package may still depend on a loader or game API that the new V Rising build does not provide.

Choose manual maintenance when updates are infrequent and you want direct oversight. Choose a scripted deployment when you can test and maintain the host automation. Managed hosting is appropriate when scheduled jobs, backups and restart controls matter more than low-level server access; confirm that its panel can stop the instance, preserve saves and expose logs before committing to it.
