To find out who accessed or downloaded a file, first identify the storage service and check that its data-level request logging was enabled for the right resource and time period. General account activity history may not record individual object reads. The steps and gaps differ across Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage, and Azure Blob Storage, so a missing event is not proof that a file was never accessed.
First identify the storage service and audit scope
“Cloud storage account” can mean an object-storage service such as Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage, or Azure Blob Storage. This guide covers those services; consumer sync and collaboration products can have different audit tools and licensing.

Before searching, write down the provider, account or project, bucket or container, object name or relevant prefix, and incident time window. Include the access route if known: browser, API, signed URL or SAS, or public access. These details help you choose the right logs and interpret the identity fields without assuming every request is attributed to a named person.

Confirm that the relevant logging control was active for the resource and period, that it included read operations, and that logs were sent to a destination you can access and query. Check the configuration’s scope, selectors or categories, destination, retention settings, and your permission to view the resulting logs.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Turning logging on now does not establish what happened before it was enabled.
- Account-level management history may not include data-plane requests such as reading an object.
- Note when the configuration became active and any gaps in the period. Do not treat an empty search as evidence of no access unless you have established that the relevant events were being collected and retained.
Choose the read-event source for your provider
| Provider and log source | What it can show | Setup and key distinction | Coverage caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon S3 CloudTrail data events | Object operations such as GetObject, plus other object actions. Events can include who made a request, source IP, time, and additional details. |
Configure S3 object data events for the bucket or objects in scope. Data events are not recorded by default, and AWS says they incur additional charges. CloudTrail Event history does not contain these data events. AWS recommends CloudTrail for bucket-level and object-level actions. Amazon S3 logging options; S3 CloudTrail events; Logging S3 API calls with CloudTrail | Check that selectors cover the relevant bucket, objects, and period. A search in Event history alone will not find S3 data events. |
| Amazon S3 server access logging | Request records for bucket and object requests; it can supplement analysis of requests. | It must be enabled. Logs can be delivered to S3 or CloudWatch Logs, with query options depending on destination. Logging requests with server access logging; S3 server access log format | Delivery is best-effort; AWS says completeness and timeliness are not guaranteed, although most logs arrive within a few hours. |
| Google Cloud Storage Cloud Audit Logs | Data Access DATA_READ events cover getting object data, getting object metadata, and listing objects. |
Enable Data Access audit logs, including DATA_READ, for the relevant project and query the resulting logs. They are disabled by default. Cloud Audit Logs with Cloud Storage |
Public object access is not tracked. For authenticated browser downloads outside the Cloud Console, principal email and caller IP may be redacted. |
| Google Cloud Storage usage logs | Bucket request records that can help with public-resource requests or when request size, latency, full URL path, or query parameters matter. | Consider these alongside audit logs when their request-level details address a specific gap. Usage logs and storage logs | Delivery can be delayed; completeness and timeliness are not guaranteed. |
| Azure Blob Storage resource logs | Request-level resource logs, including successful and failed authenticated requests. | Create a diagnostic setting that routes the relevant resource logs to a destination before expecting them to be saved or queryable. Monitor Azure Blob Storage | Requests are logged on a best-effort basis. |
These mechanisms differ in event coverage, identity and request details, filtering scope, delivery, query options, and charges. The sources above do not establish a uniform cost comparison across providers.
Search for reads, then widen the investigation
- Start with the exact object and time window. Filter on the object key or path and the incident interval, using the time zone recorded by the log system.
- Select read-related operations. In S3 CloudTrail, look for object data events such as
GetObject. In Cloud Storage, includeDATA_READ, which also covers metadata reads and object listings. In Azure, use the resource logs routed by the diagnostic setting. - Include both successful and failed requests. A denied request may show probing or an attempted access even when it did not return the object. Confirm how the selected provider’s event schema represents operation and result.
- Widen carefully if the exact-object search is inconclusive. Expand to related prefixes, nearby time periods, relevant principals or roles, source addresses where available, and surrounding list or read operations.
For each candidate event, inspect the operation, object, timestamp, principal or role, caller address when present, status or error, request ID, and any useful request or response attributes. The available fields and how identity is represented vary by provider and access route.

Interpret an event without overstating what it proves
A service log records a request; it does not by itself prove that a complete file reached a device or that a person opened it. A request can fail, and a recorded read request is not the same as independent evidence of end-to-end receipt. Keep the conclusion tied to what the event actually records: for example, that a read request was recorded for a particular object at a particular time, with a reported result and the identity details available in that log.
Absence of a matching event is also inconclusive if logging was disabled, the resource or operation fell outside the configured scope, the relevant destination or retention window is unavailable, or the provider’s logging has a stated coverage limitation. In particular, account for S3 server access log delivery being best-effort, Cloud Storage audit-log exclusions and redactions, Cloud Storage usage-log delivery limits, and Azure resource logs being best-effort.

Preserve the evidence and document its limits
- Save the relevant events or export, including event identifiers or request IDs where available.
- Record the log source, resource scope, active configuration and destination, query filters, and time zone.
- Note missing fields, known exclusions, delivery caveats, and any period that was not covered.
- Restrict access to audit logs and retain them according to your organization’s policy and applicable requirements. Retention depends on account configuration and requirements; there is no universal duration established here.
