What a feature flag audit should tell you
A feature flag can alter application behavior at runtime, without a new code deployment. Teams use flags for canary releases and experiments, and to disable or degrade functionality during an outage. That makes a configuration edit operationally significant: an audit should let someone reconstruct what changed and assess its effect. The OpenFeature overview describes runtime evaluation, flag-management systems, and these use cases.

Keep the change record distinct from evaluation telemetry. A change history answers, “Who changed this configuration, and from what to what?” Evaluation tracking answers questions such as, “Which value did a subject receive, and what happened afterward?” OpenFeature documents management-system audit trails separately from its tracking API. Exposure or evaluation events are not a substitute for an attributable configuration-change log.

A useful record identifies the flag and environment and includes the actor, timestamp, change type, and old and new values. Add a reason, approval reference, or related incident or change request when your process captures that context. CloudBees’ governance guide documents records with before-and-after state, timestamp, user, change type, application, and environment; that is a product example, not a universal audit schema.

Choose where the authoritative history lives
There are two practical approaches, and they can be combined. A flag-management platform may centralize edits and history; a version-controlled manifest makes configuration changes reviewable as diffs in a repository. OpenFeature describes providers connecting a common evaluation API to management systems, while its CLI and GitHub Action documentation describe manifest and comparison workflows. The OpenFeature API standard itself should not be mistaken for a complete audit store.

In either approach, decide and document the source of truth for each environment. If a console is authoritative, confirm that its audit history covers the entities and edits you need to review. If the repository is authoritative, define how approved changes are synchronized to the management service and how out-of-band edits are detected and resolved.

Set up a repeatable audit workflow
- Inventory flags and owners. Record each flag’s stable identifier, owning service or team, and the environments where it exists. Use clear descriptions. The OpenFeature CLI manifest model includes a unique flag key, description, type, and default value.
- Define the source of truth per environment. State whether changes begin in the management service or the repository, and document how the two are reconciled. OpenFeature CLI documentation describes manifest synchronization, while the OpenFeature GitHub Action describes local-to-remote comparisons.
- Require context appropriate to the risk. For consequential changes, capture intent, affected environment, expected rollout, and a related incident or change request. Define when approval is required, who reviews, what criteria apply, and expected response times. CloudBees’ governance guide recommends approval criteria, assigned reviewer responsibilities, documented rationale, and coordination with deployment processes.
- Review the diff before applying or syncing. Use a CLI dry run or pull-request comparison where available to expose unintended edits before they reach remote configuration. The OpenFeature CLI documents dry-run previewing; the GitHub Action documents pull-request validation and remote comparison.
- Protect and test access to history. Retain history under your organization’s policy, using appropriate access controls. Test whether reviewers can retrieve the relevant old and new states during an incident. The sources describe historical review but do not establish a universal retention period or guarantee of tamper resistance; set retention and integrity requirements according to organizational policy and applicable obligations.
- Reconcile environments periodically. Compare approved manifests with remote configuration, investigate mismatches, and record who resolved each discrepancy and why. The OpenFeature GitHub Action documentation describes remote comparison and environment-consistency checks.
Use drift checks to catch changes outside review
A repository diff shows what was proposed or committed there; it does not, by itself, prove that live configuration matches. Likewise, a management-platform history may show edits without showing whether every environment is aligned with the reviewed version. Compare the two states and define a response for mismatches: determine which state is authoritative, review the discrepancy, restore or approve the intended configuration, and record the resolution.
The OpenFeature GitHub Action documents pull-request validation, comparison with remote configuration, and environment consistency checks. The CLI documentation describes pulling and pushing manifests and previewing a change with a dry run. These tools illustrate useful workflows; confirm that any chosen tool and platform cover your actual flags, environments, and review controls.

Keep evaluation tracking separate
If you need to know which value a subject received and what followed, instrument evaluation or tracking data separately from the configuration audit. OpenFeature’s tracking specification describes associating evaluations with subsequent actions or application states. Handle that data under suitable privacy and retention practices; it answers a different question from who edited a flag.

CloudBees Unify documents centralized audit history filterable by application, entity type, entity name, environment, and date range, along with a flag-scoped audit view. Its guide describes expanded records with side-by-side before-and-after states and metadata such as timestamp, user, and change type. It also states that changes to application or environment names are not captured as dedicated audit-history records, although renamed values can appear in flag records. This is a CloudBees-specific documented limitation; verify current product behavior before relying on it, and check comparable coverage in any platform you use.
