To audit an AI assistant’s profile of you, check more than the conversation list: saved memories, chat or activity history, connected apps, imported data, and account-level privacy controls can be separate. Export anything you want to keep, remove both the remembered fact and its source where needed, then review settings for future activity or model-improvement use. The exact controls—and what remains after deletion—depend on the service and whether your account is personal or managed by work or school.
What to check before deleting anything
First identify the assistant, the account you used, and the devices or connected apps involved. A work or school account may be governed by an administrator, so personal-account instructions may not apply. If you want a record, export your data before removing it: an export is a copy, not a deletion.

Audit these categories separately; a visible chat list is not necessarily a complete view of information associated with your account:

- Chats and activity: conversation history, prompts, shared files or media, and other activity logs.
- Connected apps and imported data: information that may still be available through an app connection or import even after a chat is removed.
- Files, shared links, and account records: separate items that may have their own controls.
- Future-use preferences: activity retention and model-improvement settings. These controls generally do not erase existing data.
Audit and remove data in ChatGPT
Inspect, export, and manage controls
For an eligible personal ChatGPT account, open Settings > Data Controls to find controls for data export, model improvement, shared links, and account deletion. Open the memory or personalization settings separately to review and manage saved information. Available controls can depend on the account and workspace; managed-workspace users should contact their administrator about export or deletion options. OpenAI’s Data Controls guidance describes these distinctions.

Delete saved memories and chats separately
Removing a conversation does not necessarily remove a saved memory drawn from it. Delete the relevant memory through memory controls and delete the source conversation if you also want it removed from chat history. OpenAI’s Memory FAQ says turning off reference to chat history schedules remembered information from past chats for deletion within 30 days; that setting is distinct from deleting individual memories or chats.
Turning off Improve the model for everyone affects new conversations; it does not remove those conversations from chat history. OpenAI’s Privacy Center is the route for requests about inaccurate or unwanted personal information in ChatGPT responses. OpenAI says it assesses such requests case by case, balancing privacy rights with other considerations, including freedom of expression and public interest.
Audit and remove data in Gemini
Review activity and export a copy
For Gemini Apps, review and delete activity and adjust Keep Activity in Gemini Apps Activity. Activity may include prompts and shared files or media; Google’s privacy hub also describes connected app and device information and imported chats. To keep a copy, export Gemini Apps data through Google Takeout. Google cautions that downloading activity does not delete it from its servers; see its Takeout instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRemove remembered information and its source
Use Gemini’s memory-of-past-chats controls to manage personalization. Google’s help instructs users to delete chats containing the information Gemini remembers and, if it came from a connected app, disconnect that app as well. Removing only the chat or only the connection may leave another route through which the information is available. See Gemini Apps Help.
Understand Keep Activity and retention
With Keep Activity off, future chats do not appear in Activity and are not used to train Google AI unless you send feedback. Google says some chats may nevertheless be kept for up to 72 hours for service provision, feedback, and safety; some connected apps are unavailable when the setting is off. Work or school accounts may have activity settings administered by the organization. These conditions are described in Google’s Gemini Apps Help.
Google describes 18 months as the auto-delete default for Gemini Apps Activity, with choices of 3 months, 36 months, or indefinite. It also says activity previously reviewed by human reviewers may not be removed when account activity is deleted and may be retained for up to three years. These are Google’s stated policy periods and exceptions, not a guarantee that every copy is erased on a particular schedule. See the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.
Audit and remove data in Microsoft Copilot
For Copilot used with a personal Microsoft Account, Microsoft’s privacy controls page describes deleting individual memories and managing overall Copilot chat activity history through Microsoft account privacy controls: Copilot privacy controls. Do not assume these steps apply to work or school Copilot deployments; those may use different organization-managed settings.

What deletion and opt-outs do—and do not—mean
Deleting visible history, deleting saved memory, turning off future activity, opting out of model improvement, and deleting an account are different actions. A provider may also retain some data temporarily or under legal, security, safety, or other stated exceptions. For example, OpenAI’s US privacy policy says selected personal data is removed within 30 days, subject to stated exceptions; it also says already de-identified and disassociated data may no longer be linked to an account for deletion. That is OpenAI’s policy statement, not a universal promise about every copy or AI service: OpenAI Privacy Policy.

- No more exposed information in unprotected notary journals. This product shields clients' confidential information from prying eyes. It allows the Notary Public to keep the journal open during the transaction, as NO prior client information is viewable.
- Shields clients' AND Notary Publics' confidential information
- GLBA and HIPAA require non-disclosure policies and procedures. Notary Privacy Guard is a compliance tool for the professional Notary Public.
- Decreases Notary Public's liability from exposing client information
- Journal column headers are printed on the Notary Privacy Guard, no having to peek underneath to complete the journal entry. Becomes part of the journal and also acts as a place marker.
Do not assume a setting change removes information already retained by a provider, or that deletion guarantees removal of information incorporated into model weights. The provider-specific sources cited here do not establish a universal guarantee on that point.
Quick Recap
A practical audit-and-delete sequence
- Identify the service and account. Note whether it is a personal account or managed by work or school, and which connected apps or devices you used.
- Export first if a copy matters. Use the service’s export route. Downloading does not delete provider-held data.
- Inspect each category. Check memory or personalization, chats and activity, connected apps, imported data, files or shared links, and future-use settings.
- Remove the fact and its sources. Use the dedicated memory control, delete relevant chats or activity, and disconnect a connected app if it supplied the information.
- Set future-use preferences separately. Review activity retention and model-improvement controls; do not treat an opt-out as a deletion of prior data.
- Use the official privacy channel for anything settings do not cover. Describe the personal information and where it appears, and request access, correction, or removal as appropriate. Rights and provider review vary by jurisdiction and case.
- Verify the result. Revisit the memory or activity panel and try a neutral prompt to check whether personalization changes. Treat the assistant’s answer as a clue, not as a complete provider export or proof of deletion.
