Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Then review temporal continuity—such as what happens when the character is occluded and reappears—and report the affected frame or shot with an explanation. No single similarity score proves that identity is correct: treat scores as screening signals, calibrate thresholds for the content you make, and send uncertain results to a human reviewer.
What should a frame-by-frame character audit measure?
“Consistency” can mean more than one thing. A character may look different from its reference, change appearance between two shots, or appear to jump abruptly between states. These are related problems, but they are not interchangeable measurements.

- Reference similarity: Does each observed appearance match the chosen character reference on the attributes meant to remain stable?
- Sequence stability: Does the character look like the same entity across its appearances in the video, including across shot changes?
- Temporal continuity: Do identity and relevant states remain coherent over time, especially through occlusion, disappearance and reappearance, or interaction?
- Visual or motion defects: Are there abrupt visual changes or discontinuities that warrant inspection, even if identity remains recognizable?
ViStoryBench describes both cross-similarity to a reference and self-similarity within a sequence. Its metrics page describes an ensemble of face-feature models for realistic subjects and CLIP for stylized characters; that makes it a useful example of why a method may vary by visual style, not independent proof that those approaches are accurate for every production. A frame-level resemblance measure cannot by itself establish temporal identity. TOC-Bench evaluates video-language reasoning using per-frame object tracks and a temporal event timeline, including cases involving occlusion, reappearance, state changes and interaction. The authors report that identity-sensitive temporal reasoning remains a weakness even when systems perform well on general video-understanding benchmarks. How do the available audit approaches differ?
These options address different parts of the problem. Their scores are not on a shared scale, so do not compare a number from one system directly with a number from another as if both used the same calibration.
| Approach | What it can contribute | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Reference and sequence similarity | Measures resemblance to an anchor and stability within a sequence. ViStoryBench describes both comparison directions. | Appearance embeddings can respond to pose, lighting, framing, occlusion and stylization as well as identity. A benchmark metric description is not a general accuracy validation. Source |
| Local clip-scoring tool | ContinuityGuard documents a local command-line workflow using same-named-character crops and MobileNetV2 embeddings, plus a separate frame-difference motion heuristic. Its project describes human-readable and JSON output. | The project says its character score is best validated on photorealistic content and that performance on stylized or anime-adjacent designs is unverified. Its motion check is a heuristic, not a physics simulator; sample fixture scores come from synthetic fixtures, not independent real-footage testing. ContinuityGuard documentation |
| Temporal video benchmark | TOC-Bench tests identity, state and continuity across events using object tracks and temporal event timelines. | It evaluates video-language-model reasoning; it is not a turnkey production frame-by-frame character checker. TOC-Bench preprint |
| Multi-aspect score with commentary | AIGVE-MACS is presented as a model that combines numerical scores with language comments across multiple AI-generated-video evaluation dimensions. | Broad video evaluation is not proof of robust character-identity grading in every domain. AIGVE-BENCH 2, associated with the paper, comprises 2,500 AI-generated videos and 22,500 human-annotated detailed comments and numerical scores across nine evaluation aspects; these are dataset construction figures, not a character-auditor accuracy result. AIGVE-MACS paper page |
| Task-specific rubric | Explicit criteria and structured grader outputs can make judgments easier to inspect. OpenAI’s image-evaluation guidance includes examples involving identity preservation and artifact severity. | The guidance concerns image generation and editing. Applying it to video requires video-specific criteria and validation; it does not supply a ready-made temporal consistency standard. Image Evals for Image Generation and Editing Use Cases |
How can you design an inspectable audit?
Use a layered workflow so that a visual mismatch, a missing observation and a genuine identity change do not all become the same kind of failure. The following is a practical synthesis of the evaluation patterns described by the sources, not a standardized protocol.

- Define the identity anchor. Choose the reference image or approved set of references. Specify which traits should persist—for example, facial features or markings, silhouette, clothing, or palette. Mark story-driven changes, such as an intentional costume change, as allowed rather than treating them as drift.
- Find the character in the sequence. Detect or crop the subject and associate its appearances across frames or shots. Preserve low-confidence detections and uncertain associations as uncertainty; do not silently turn a missed detection into an identity change.
- Compare in both directions. Compare each usable appearance with the reference, then compare appearances with one another. The first catches departure from the anchor; the second can reveal sequence changes that a single reference comparison may not describe clearly.
- Account for viewing conditions. Record occlusion, viewpoint changes, lighting, framing and shot cuts. When there is not enough visible evidence for a reliable comparison, report “not enough evidence” rather than a confident drift judgment.
- Run a separate temporal pass. Inspect continuity through disappearance and reappearance, changes of state, and interactions. A still-image resemblance score does not establish that a character’s identity or state was tracked correctly across time.
- Make every flag actionable. Include the frame or time range and shot, the comparison or metric used, its threshold and calibration context, and a concise reason. Send ambiguous, stylized or high-impact flags to a person for review.
How should you choose and interpret a threshold?
The cited sources do not establish a universal pass score. A threshold that works for one visual style, camera setup or use case may misclassify another. For example, changes in pose, occlusion or lighting can affect appearance comparisons without proving that the character changed; stylized designs also need validation specific to their visual features.

ContinuityGuard’s documentation describes a local-first CLI that decodes clips with ffmpeg and reports character-consistency and motion-discontinuity flags. The project says its implementation runs on CPU without a GPU and requires a separate system ffmpeg installation; these are project-specific implementation claims, not universal hardware requirements. Its documented fixture examples are synthetic, and the project cautions that stylized-character results should prompt human review. ContinuityGuard project documentation

Benchmarks can show that temporal reasoning is being tested systematically, but their dataset sizes should not be mistaken for the accuracy of a production checker. TOC-Bench reports a human-verified benchmark of 2,323 question-answer pairs over 1,951 videos. It also reports that its temporal-necessity filtering removed 60.7% of candidate question-answer pairs and that the retained pool contains 17,900 temporally dependent items across 10 diagnostic dimensions. Those figures describe benchmark construction, not a character-consistency system’s pass rate. TOC-Bench preprint

The authors summarize the remaining challenge this way: “Experiments on representative Video-LLMs show that temporal object consistency remains a major unsolved challenge, with notable weaknesses in event counting, event ordering, identity-sensitive reasoning, and hallucination-aware verification, even when models perform well on general video understanding benchmarks.” TOC-Bench authors

A report should let a reviewer reproduce the reasoning behind a flag instead of presenting an unexplained grade. At minimum, include:
- The character reference and the traits considered stable or intentionally changeable.
- The affected frame, time range or shot, plus the relevant crop or track when available.
- Whether the result came from reference similarity, sequence similarity, temporal review or a separate motion heuristic.
- The score and threshold, with the visual domain and calibration context that give them meaning.
- A plain-language reason and a confidence or “not enough evidence” outcome where comparison is unreliable.
- Whether the result needs human review and, if reviewed, the disposition.
Numerical grading paired with language explanation is also the broad direction described for AIGVE-MACS, but comments do not eliminate the need to validate the underlying identity judgments for the specific content being audited. AIGVE-MACS paper page
