Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAt a 320 CSS-pixel viewport, check whether the page fits without unintended horizontal scrolling, clipped content, or unreadable text. In Chrome DevTools, set the responsive viewport to 320px and run a short Console check comparing the document’s scrollable width with its visible width. A positive result is a clue to investigate—not, by itself, an accessibility verdict.
Set the viewport to 320px in Chrome DevTools
-
Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools. Turn on Device Mode using the device toolbar button or the Toggle device toolbar command.

In the device toolbar, choose the responsive option and set the viewport width to
320CSS pixels. Chrome also documents a Mobile S preset at 320px; the responsive controls let you enter custom dimensions. See Chrome’s Device Mode guide.Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Keep the page’s execution context selected in the Console, then run this illustrative check:

({ viewport: document.documentElement.clientWidth, page: document.documentElement.scrollWidth, overflows: document.documentElement.scrollWidth > document.documentElement.clientWidth })
The result reports the document element’s client width, its scrollable width, and whether the latter is greater. If overflows is true, the page has a wider scrollable area than its visible document width at that moment. This expression is a convenient diagnostic, not a command prescribed by Chrome or a complete test of every element.
Find out what is making the page wider
Use the result to begin an inspection, not to declare a defect automatically. Look for content extending past the viewport: a fixed-width container, a long unbroken string, an oversized image, or another component whose layout does not adapt. web.dev explains that fixed-width content can cause horizontal scrolling and recommends flexible layouts; for images, it gives max-width: 100% as a way to keep them within their containing element. See web.dev’s responsive design basics.

Check the page visually as well as in the Console. Text should remain readable, the layout should remain usable, and content should not be clipped or require page-wide horizontal scrolling. Some components—such as a data table or map—may need two-dimensional presentation and their own horizontal scrolling. Assess whether that movement belongs to the component rather than treating every horizontal scroll as a page failure. The UK Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) describes this distinction in its responsive design testing guidance.

Inspect responsive breakpoints
In DevTools, inspect the page’s media-query breakpoints rather than assuming a single narrow-width screenshot tells the whole story. Chrome’s Device Mode documentation explains how to display breakpoint bars and jump from a breakpoint to the relevant CSS declaration. See the Device Mode guide.

Test orientation and text size
Check the layout in both portrait and landscape, and test text resizing up to 200%. The DWP manual also recommends checking with a larger browser font setting. These checks can reveal problems that a width comparison alone cannot identify, such as text becoming difficult to read or a layout breaking after text grows. See DWP’s responsive design testing guidance.
Confirm important cases on a physical phone
Chrome Device Mode is useful for setting repeatable viewport dimensions and inspecting responsive behavior, but it is an approximation: it does not run the page on a physical mobile device. If the page’s behavior on phones matters, confirm important cases on an actual device as well. Chrome documents the distinction in its Device Mode guide.

Fix the cause instead of hiding the symptom
When an element causes unintended overflow, adjust its layout so it can fit the available space. Flexible Grid or Flexbox layouts can adapt more readily than fixed widths; images can be constrained to their container. Avoid merely clipping or hiding the offending content to make the Console comparison pass: that can conceal information rather than make the page work at a narrow viewport. For background on flexible layouts, image sizing, and common overflow causes, see web.dev’s responsive design basics.
