To attribute checkout costs to feature-flag variants, capture each user’s evaluated flag and variant, record the checkout outcome against the same stable user or evaluation context, and join the two records. Compare variants only after defining what “cost” means for the experiment: an order total, shipping charged, payment processing expense, or another measure are not interchangeable.
Define the cost measure before starting the experiment
Write down the exact outcome you intend to compare before assigning users to variants. Checkout telemetry can contain order and shipping amounts, but those example fields do not establish an accounting definition. A customer-paid order total, shipping charged to the customer, payment processing cost, and infrastructure cost answer different questions.

Specify the metric’s unit and currency, which charges or components it includes, the event that qualifies as a checkout, the measurement window, and how failed, cancelled, refunded, or duplicate checkouts are treated. If the measure is a customer-facing amount, do not describe it as an internal cost unless that is actually the metric being studied.
Keep cohort assignment identifiable and stable
Use a stable user ID or evaluation-context key for targeting and sticky bucketing. Record the flag key, the variant actually evaluated, and the ruleset or flag version so that historical assignments can be interpreted. The OpenTelemetry feature-flag attribute conventions include context, key, provider, result, variant, set, and version; the current specification page labels these attributes Release Candidate, so check their status and retain version context when implementing them: OpenTelemetry feature flag attributes.
Google Cloud’s example uses a 50/50 allocation and a user ID for sticky bucketing. Treat that split as an illustration, not a default requirement: choose the allocation that fits the experiment and keep it fixed during the comparison. Changing allocation percentages or the bucketing key can disrupt cohort consistency. See Google Cloud’s feature-flag experimentation guide.
Record exposure and completed checkout separately
A flag evaluation or exposure says which variant a context was assigned or shown; it does not prove that the user completed checkout. Emit an exposure record and a separate named outcome event when the checkout outcome occurs. Both records need a consistent user or evaluation-context identifier so they can be joined later.
The GO Feature Flag Tracking API supports recording an outcome against an evaluation context, including optional amount, currency, and custom details. Its documentation describes exposure and tracking events as separate streams that can be associated for analysis: GO Feature Flag Tracking API (v1.53.0). Include the flag, evaluated variant, and relevant version information in the exposure data; put the defined outcome and its value and currency, where applicable, in the checkout event.

OpenTelemetry’s checkout examples and manual span attributes illustrate fields such as order ID and amount, shipping amount, item count, payment transaction ID, payment amount and charged status, currency, user ID, session ID, and cart total or size. These are possible instrumentation fields, not a requirement to collect all of them. Select only what is needed to calculate the agreed metric and investigate records.

- Use a stable identifier with the same meaning in assignment, exposure, and checkout records.
- Record the order or transaction identifier if it helps identify duplicate or related events.
- Keep numeric amounts paired with their currency; do not aggregate unlike currencies as if they were one unit.
- Preserve event time and payment status so the defined checkout window and qualifying outcome can be applied consistently.
For concrete field examples, see OpenTelemetry’s Checkout Service and Manual Span Attributes.
Join the records and compare variants
- Export exposure and checkout outcome events to a warehouse or analytics destination.
- Join each outcome to the relevant exposure using the stable user or evaluation-context key. Confirm that both sides use the same identifier semantics and that the flag and variant are available for the analysis.
- Apply the pre-defined checkout event window, currency handling, and inclusion rules to calculate the cost measure.
- Compare that measure across variants under the same assignment and measurement rules.
GO Feature Flag’s A/B testing documentation explains the distinction between exposure and outcome streams and joining them for variation-level analysis: A/B testing with feature flags. Stable deterministic assignment helps make the cohorts interpretable; unstable keys or changing splits can undermine that consistency.

What this comparison can—and cannot—establish
Consistent assignment and correctly joined events are prerequisites for a useful comparison, not proof that the flag caused a cost difference. The technical guidance cited here explains assignment and event mechanics; it does not prescribe a statistical power target, confidence threshold, cost-accounting policy, or causal estimator. Those choices depend on the organization’s experiment and analysis standards. Keep the outcome definition, time window, currency or unit, and cohort rules identical across variants, and interpret results within those stated limits.
