To take photos through binoculars, focus the binoculars first, secure a phone adapter to one eyepiece, then center the phone’s active camera over that eyepiece while watching the camera preview. Tighten the alignment control only after the full optical view appears, and refocus the binoculars if needed.
How do I attach my phone to binoculars?
- Focus the binoculars first. Look through them and adjust their focus until the view is sharp. Celestron’s September 2024 instructions for model 81035 recommend doing this before attaching a phone. Celestron manual
- Clamp the adapter to one eyepiece. Open the eyepiece clamp, place it around the eyepiece, and tighten it securely. Use a section of the eyepiece barrel that does not rotate freely. For Celestron model 81035, lower the eyecup before fitting the clamp.
- Seat the phone in its holder. Position it flat and make sure the case does not prevent it from sitting correctly. With Celestron model 81035, raised grips, stands, rings, and folio-style cases can obstruct placement; other adapters may have different requirements.
- Open the phone’s camera preview. Loosen the adapter’s alignment control and move the phone until the active camera is centered over the binocular eyepiece and the preview shows the optical view. Tighten the control once the view is centered.
- Confirm which phone camera is active. ZEISS recommends using the main camera; on most phones, the standard 1× setting indicates it. Some phones may switch lenses automatically. If that happens, ZEISS suggests closing and restarting the camera app with the adapter mounted. Disabling a focus enhancer may help on some phones. See the ZEISS adapter manual.
- Refocus the binoculars if needed. With the phone aligned, adjust the binocular focus again until the image in the preview is sharp.
Remove the phone adapter before carrying the binoculars. Celestron warns that an attached adapter can be bumped off during transport and damage the phone.

How do I line up my phone camera with the binocular eyepiece?
Use the live preview rather than judging alignment by eye from outside the holder. Move the phone slowly with the alignment control loosened. The goal is for the eyepiece’s optical image to fill the preview, rather than appearing as a small circle or being clipped to one side. Once the image is centered, tighten the control without shifting the phone.

Why are my photos through binoculars blurry or dark?
- The image is soft: Focus the binoculars while looking through them before attaching the phone, then adjust focus again after alignment. Also make sure the phone has not shifted while you tightened the adapter.
- The preview is dark or shows only part of the view: Loosen the alignment control, reposition the phone camera over the eyepiece, and center the optical image in the preview before tightening it.
- The phone appears to use the wrong view or lens: Select the main camera, usually the 1× view, and check whether the phone switched lenses automatically. Restarting the camera app with the adapter mounted may help; ZEISS also notes that disabling a focus enhancer may help on some phones.
- The adapter will not sit securely: Check that the eyecup is positioned as the adapter manual specifies, the clamp is on a non-rotating part of the barrel, and the phone lies flat in its holder. Confirm that the eyepiece diameter and phone fit are within the adapter’s stated limits, and remove or account for case features that interfere with placement.
Check fit before choosing a smartphone binocular adapter
Adapter compatibility depends on the particular model: verify both the binocular eyepiece dimensions and the phone-and-case fit against the adapter’s specifications. For example, Celestron lists a 29–45 mm eyepiece-diameter range for its Smartphone Adapter DX Kit and explicitly includes binoculars among compatible optics. That range applies to that product, not to adapters generally. See the Celestron DX Kit product page.
An adjustable clamp can hold and center a phone over an eyepiece, but it cannot guarantee sharper pictures by itself. Focus, steady mounting, available light, the phone’s camera behavior, and the binoculars’ optical quality also affect the result. When comparing adapters, check:
