Turn off and unplug your KitchenAid stand mixer, then follow the steps for its head style: tilt-head or bowl-lift. The drive assembly faces a different way on each. Once the bowl, dasher, and drive assembly are secure and engaged, start the mixer at speed one before adding the ice cream base.
Before you attach the ice cream maker
Check that the attachment matches your mixer model. KitchenAid’s product listing identifies the Ice Cream Maker Attachment as model KICA0WH and says it fits household KitchenAid stand mixers except the Artisan Mini 3.5 Quart. KitchenAid’s setup article separately names the KPM5 bowl-lift mixer as an exception. Confirm your mixer’s exact model and the attachment version before setup.

The attachment includes a freeze bowl, dasher, and drive assembly. KitchenAid also describes an optional freeze bowl adaptor ring for select models. Its product page lists capacity of up to 2 quarts; that is the stated product capacity, not an independent performance measure.

Freeze the bowl before assembly. KitchenAid’s setup article says at least 15 hours, while its current Product Help instructions say at least 16 hours. Follow the instructions supplied with your particular attachment. The bowl starts thawing when removed from the freezer, so use it promptly.

Attach it to a tilt-head mixer
- Turn the mixer off and unplug it. Tilt the motor head back and remove the mixing bowl.
- Place the dasher inside the freeze bowl, then set the freeze bowl on the bowl-clamping plate.
- Position the drive assembly on the motor head with side A closest to the beater shaft. Slide it into place, center its curved edges on the head, and press upward until secure.
- Lower the motor head so the drive assembly engages the dasher. If they do not engage, slide the drive assembly forward or back until they do.
- Lower the head fully and move the locking lever to LOCK. Check that the head cannot be raised, then plug in the mixer.
Attach it to a bowl-lift mixer
- Turn the mixer off and unplug it. Lower the bowl-lift handle and remove the mixing bowl.
- Fit the freeze bowl over the locating pins and press the rear bowl pin into the spring latch. If it does not fit, remove and rotate the bowl so the other pin faces the latch, as KitchenAid directs.
- Place the dasher inside the freeze bowl.
- Set the drive assembly on the dasher with side B closest to the beater shaft. Slide it into place and check that it is centered and secure.
- Raise the bowl to engage the dasher and drive assembly. Plug in the mixer after assembly.
Start the mixer before adding the base
Do not pour in the ice cream base until every part is assembled and the mixer is running. KitchenAid warns that adding batter before starting can make it freeze prematurely and lock the dasher or attachment, which may cause breakage. Set the mixer to speed one first, then slowly add the base.
Replacement part
If you need a replacement dasher, KitchenAid lists part 9707758G as fitting attachment model KICA0WH. Check the attachment model before ordering.
