Vanilla Left 4 Dead 2 cannot permanently pin a specific survivor to a specific player. To assign models by player, run SourceMod on the server and add a survivor-model plugin. The most direct administrative command is sm_setmodel <player> <survivor name>, but the commonly circulated Set Survivor Models plugin is old and has been reported not to compile on newer or beta SourceMod branches. Test compatibility on a staging server before using it in production.

What you can and cannot do without a plugin
The stock game handles survivor selection itself. Server administrators do not get a built-in command that binds one Steam player to one survivor model across campaigns. Any method that appears to do this on an unmodified server is generally changing a temporary game state rather than adding a durable per-player assignment system.
SourceMod supplies the server-side extension layer, while a plugin supplies the model-selection logic. The plugin decides whether an administrator, an ordinary player, or both can select a model; whether the choice is remembered; and how the assignment is reapplied when the game changes state. Those behaviors are plugin-specific, so read the plugin’s own command and configuration output instead of assuming that one plugin’s settings apply to another.

For a small private server where only an administrator needs to assign models, start by evaluating Set Survivor Models, but be prepared to switch if it will not compile. For public play, Survivor Chat Select 2 is the clearer fit when player choice, forced models, and admin restrictions are all required.
Prerequisites before installing anything
- A dedicated Left 4 Dead 2 server on which you can install SourceMod extensions and restart or change the map.
- A working SourceMod installation that matches the server’s current build and operating system.
- Server-console or RCON access for checking plugin load status and running administrative commands.
- A backup of the existing
addons/sourcemoddirectory and configuration files. - A staging instance or an empty test server. Model plugins can conflict with survivor identity, campaign transitions, or other gameplay plugins.
Record your exact SourceMod version before testing. A plugin that worked on an older stable branch may fail to compile, fail to load, or expose different commands on a newer branch. A successful file copy is not proof that the plugin is active.
Install and verify a model plugin
- Obtain the plugin package from its current project page. Prefer a compiled release that explicitly identifies its supported SourceMod branch. If only source code is available, compile it with the same SourceMod toolchain used by your server.
- Back up the server. Copy the existing SourceMod plugins and configuration directories so you can remove the model plugin without losing unrelated settings.
- Place the compiled plugin. Copy the
.smxfile into the server’saddons/sourcemod/pluginsdirectory. Copy any configuration file, include, extension, or dependency only where the plugin’s package specifies; do not guess at filenames. - Restart the server or change the map. A full restart is the safest first load because it also reloads dependencies. Changing the map can be sufficient for a simple plugin, but it can leave a failed dependency hidden until the next restart.
- Check the load result. From the server console, run
sm plugins list. Confirm that the plugin appears as running rather than failed. If it is listed as “error” or missing, inspect the SourceMod error log before trying commands. - Read the plugin’s command list. Use the plugin’s documented help command or SourceMod’s command listing. Confirm the exact spelling, argument order, permission flag, and any cvar that controls player access.
- Test with one player on a private map. Apply one model, observe the result, then test a second player. Test a round restart, a team change, and a campaign or map transition before inviting others.
Remove the .smx and restart if the plugin causes crashes, repeated error-log entries, invisible models, or conflicts with another survivor-management plugin. Do not leave a broken plugin enabled while troubleshooting a different one.

sm_setmodel <player> <survivor name>
Replace <player> with the target syntax accepted by your SourceMod installation and replace <survivor name> with the survivor identifier shown by the plugin’s help. Do not assume that a display name, a nickname, and an internal model name are interchangeable. If the command returns an argument or target error, run the plugin’s help output and copy its accepted values exactly.
The command requires the SourceMod CHEATS flag. That is an administrative permission requirement, not the same thing as enabling the game’s global sv_cheats setting. Grant only the minimum admin access needed, then verify the command with a test account before giving it to moderators.

The plugin also exposes sm_setmymodel. Whether ordinary players can use it is controlled by a cvar. Because the cvar name and default can differ between releases, inspect the plugin’s generated configuration file or help output after the first load. Set the cvar deliberately, restart or reload the plugin as directed, and test with a non-admin account.
Player self-selection and administrator assignment are separate controls. Enabling the player command does not necessarily remove an administrator’s ability to force a model, and disabling it does not prevent an administrator from using sm_setmodel.

What to test after an assignment
- The target’s visible model changes immediately or at the next state transition, as specified by the plugin.
- Other players see the same model, not only the person who issued the command.
- The assignment behaves as expected after death, respawn, a team switch, and a map change.
- Two players assigned different survivors do not overwrite one another.
- The server log does not report missing files, invalid entities, or repeated errors.
If a model reverts during one of these tests, that is evidence that another plugin or a game transition is resetting the survivor identity. Capture the exact transition and inspect the plugin documentation before changing several settings at once.
Using Survivor Chat Select 2
Survivor Chat Select 2 is designed around in-game model selection rather than a single administrator-only command. It supports player choice, administrator restrictions, and forced models without cookies. “Without cookies” means the selection does not depend on a client-side preference cookie being present; it does not guarantee that every choice survives every campaign or plugin reset.

- Install and load the plugin, then confirm it appears as running in
sm plugins list. - Use the chat or menu command documented by the current release to open survivor selection. Do not infer the trigger from a different version.
- Choose a survivor and verify the result from another connected player’s viewpoint.
- Repeat after a round restart and map transition so you know whether the plugin reapplies or clears the choice.
Forced models and restrictions
Administrators can restrict who may open the selector and can force a model for a player or slot. The exact admin flag and command names are release-specific, so use the plugin’s own configuration and help text. On a public server, begin with selection restricted to trusted flags; unrestricted model changes can create duplicate-looking teams or interfere with a ruleset that expects fixed survivor identities.
Campaign survivor counts
The plugin advertises support for eight survivors in Left 4 Dead 2 campaigns and four survivors in Left 4 Dead 1 campaigns. Test both campaign types if your server rotates them. A setup that works with eight available choices in a Left 4 Dead 2 map should not be assumed to expose the same menu or slot behavior in a Left 4 Dead 1 campaign.

Custom and workshop survivor models
Changing a stock survivor assignment and loading a custom model are different tasks. Survivor Chat Select 2 notes that most Left 4 Dead 2 workshop models must be recompiled before use. A workshop subscription or downloaded archive alone is therefore not evidence that the model is compatible with a server-side assignment plugin.
Before enabling a custom model
- Confirm that the model package is intended for Left 4 Dead 2 and includes the files required by the plugin.
- Check whether the model author provides a recompiled version or build instructions.
- Test the model on a private server with one survivor and one client first.
- Look for missing-texture, invisible-body, animation, ragdoll, or hitbox problems from both first-person and third-person viewpoints.
- Remove the custom asset if it produces errors; restore the stock survivor model to separate an asset problem from a plugin problem.
Do not describe a custom model as supported merely because it appears in a menu. The meaningful test is whether all connected clients see the intended model without errors through the transitions your server uses.

Compatibility and dependency checks
Compatibility is the main risk with these plugins. The available information does not establish a current SourceMod version for every option, and the Set Survivor Models source has been reported as no longer compiling on newer or beta branches. Treat every release as something to validate against your actual server rather than as a universal drop-in.
Signs of a version or dependency problem
- The plugin is absent from
sm plugins listafter a restart. - SourceMod reports a load error, missing extension, or invalid native.
- A command is unknown even though the file is present.
- The command appears but rejects every target or survivor name.
- The model changes briefly and then reverts when another plugin runs.
- Only custom models fail while stock survivor models work.
For L4D2Tools-related setups, the reported pairing with l4d_survivor_identity_fix and Left4DHooks is not confirmed here. Install such dependencies only when the current plugin documentation explicitly lists them, and verify each dependency independently in the plugin list and error log.
Troubleshooting by symptom
“Unknown command”
Confirm that the plugin is listed as running, not merely present on disk. Check the command spelling and whether the plugin uses a chat trigger instead of a console command. If the plugin failed to compile or load, reinstalling the same binary will not fix the issue; obtain a build compatible with your SourceMod branch or choose a maintained alternative.
“You do not have access”
The Set Survivor Models administrative command requires the CHEATS flag. Verify the account’s SourceMod admin assignment and reconnect after changing permissions. For player self-selection, inspect the cvar that controls sm_setmymodel; an administrator’s access does not prove that ordinary players are allowed to use it.

The model name is rejected
Use the exact survivor identifiers exposed by the plugin’s help output. Try a stock survivor before testing a custom name. A display label shown in a menu may not be the token accepted by a console command.
The model is invisible, distorted, or missing textures
Restore a stock model to establish whether the assignment mechanism works. If stock models are correct, rebuild or replace the custom asset as required by the plugin. Test from another client because a local cache can hide a download or rendering problem.
The model resets after a transition
Record whether the reset occurs on death, respawn, team change, round restart, or map change. Then check for a second survivor, identity, or campaign-management plugin that may be writing the model afterward. Change one plugin or setting at a time and repeat the same transition test.
Set Survivor Models will not compile
This failure has been reported for newer or beta SourceMod branches. Do not publish an incompatible binary or disable compiler warnings to force a build. Either use a SourceMod branch supported by the plugin, obtain a maintained update, or evaluate Survivor Chat Select 2 instead.

- Keep a written record of the SourceMod version, plugin filename, dependencies, cvars, and admin flags.
- Use a staging server for plugin updates and campaign rotation tests.
- Give model-changing permissions to a narrow admin group rather than every moderator.
- Keep a known-good stock-model configuration so you can roll back quickly.
- Review error logs after every update and after adding a custom model.
- Tell players which choices are cosmetic and which are restricted by campaign or server rules.
Practical decision
Use SourceMod plus a plugin; there is no vanilla per-player survivor binding. Choose Set Survivor Models only after confirming that its old code compiles and loads on your current server, and use its sm_setmodel command with the required CHEATS permission. Choose Survivor Chat Select 2 when you need an in-game selector, forced models, and admin restrictions, while planning for workshop-model recompilation and separate testing of Left 4 Dead 2 and Left 4 Dead 1 campaigns. Treat the Jackzmc collection and the L4D2Tools combination as unverified until their current contents and dependencies are confirmed on your installation.
