How Do Radio Telescopes Detect Jets From Supermassive Black Holes?

Radio telescopes detect black-hole jets through radio emission from energetic plasma. Interferometry and VLBI combine widely separated antennas to resolve the jet base, while repeated observations reveal brightness changes, polarization, apparent motion and interactions with surrounding gas.

Radio telescopes detect supermassive-black-hole jets by recording radio waves from the jets’ energetic plasma, then combining measurements from separated antennas to reconstruct structures far too small for one dish to resolve. Very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) can link observatories hundreds or thousands of kilometres apart, producing an Earth-sized virtual telescope. By repeating those observations, astronomers can measure changes in brightness and polarization, follow apparent motion, and identify places where a jet interacts with surrounding gas.

What a radio telescope is actually detecting

A supermassive black hole is not observed as a glowing ball. The radio signal comes from energetic plasma in the region around an active black hole and along the narrow outflow known as a jet. The telescope records the radio emission; astronomers then infer the jet’s shape, direction, changing activity and relationship to the black hole from that signal.

This distinction matters because a radio image is a map of emitted radiation, not a conventional photograph of the black hole. Compact, bright radio features can mark the jet’s base, while fainter emission farther out traces the flow as it leaves the central region. The closer the observations can get to the launch site, the more directly they test how the outflow begins.

As Ru-Sen Lu, lead author of the 2023 M87 study, put it: “We know that jets are ejected from the region surrounding black holes, but we still do not fully understand how this actually happens. To study this directly we need to observe the origin of the jet as close as possible to the black hole.”

How separate antennas become one high-resolution instrument

1. Each station collects the target’s radio waves

A radio observatory points its dish or dishes at the target and records the incoming signal. A single antenna can measure the source’s radio brightness, but its resolving power is limited by the dish’s size and the observing wavelength. The compact region at the base of a distant jet is usually too small to separate from nearby emission with one facility.

2. Stations observe together and preserve timing information

Interferometry solves that size problem by having multiple antennas observe the same source at the same time. The stations preserve accurately timed recordings, which can be correlated after the observing session when the facilities are widely separated. Combining the signals allows the array to measure how the radio waves arrive at different locations.

3. Long baselines provide finer angular detail

The distance between two antennas is a baseline. Arrays with baselines hundreds or thousands of kilometres long sample much finer angular structure than a single dish. Very-long-baseline interferometry, or VLBI, extends this idea across countries and continents. The resulting instrument is a virtual telescope whose effective dimensions are set by the separation of its stations rather than by one physical dish.

4. Many baselines build a more complete picture

Every pair of stations supplies a different baseline length and orientation. Those measurements sample different spatial scales and directions in the source. A broad geographic spread and a larger number of useful baselines generally make it easier to reconstruct structure without gaps or ambiguity. The reconstruction is therefore shaped not only by maximum baseline length, but also by how evenly the array covers orientations and by how sensitive each facility is.

5. Correlation and imaging turn measurements into structure

After the recordings are combined, imaging algorithms use the interferometric measurements to estimate where the radio emission is located. The output can show a compact core, a widening or bending jet, knots of enhanced brightness, or ring-like emission around the black hole’s shadow. It is a data-based reconstruction whose detail depends on baseline coverage, sensitivity, calibration and the observing wavelength.

Why VLBI is essential near a black hole

Jets begin in a region that is tiny compared with the distance to their host galaxy. Even a large conventional dish cannot normally distinguish the launch zone from the surrounding radio source. VLBI supplies the angular resolution needed to isolate that compact region and compare it with emission farther along the jet.

Resolution is only one requirement. A very long baseline can provide fine detail but still miss faint structures if the participating stations do not collect enough signal. Sensitivity, collecting area and the distribution of antennas must therefore be considered together. In the M87 campaign, the southern location and sensitivity of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) helped the team see the black-hole shadow and probe deeper into the jet emission than the other facilities could have done alone.

Different observing wavelengths also emphasize different parts of the radio-emitting region. Using more than one wavelength can help distinguish a compact, optically thick-looking core from emission that becomes visible farther downstream, although the exact region sampled depends on the source and the observing setup.

What astronomers learn from repeated radio observations

A single image gives a structure at one moment. Monitoring adds the information needed to determine whether a feature is stationary, moving, brightening, fading or changing its magnetic-field signature.

Brightness changes

The NRAO MOJAVE program monitors radio-brightness variations in jets associated with active galaxies. A sudden increase can mark a disturbance moving through the flow or a change in how the emitting plasma is beamed toward Earth. Comparing images made at multiple dates lets astronomers separate a persistent core from transient knots.

Polarization changes

MOJAVE also produces full-polarization VLBA images at wavelengths of 7 millimetres, 1.3 centimetres and 2 centimetres. Polarization supplies information that total brightness cannot: its direction and degree can change as the magnetic field and emitting plasma evolve. The program reports angular resolution better than 1 milliarcsecond for these observations, allowing polarization patterns to be compared across compact jet features.

Apparent motion

By measuring the position of a bright feature in images from different dates, astronomers can estimate its apparent speed. Some jets show apparent superluminal motion: a geometric and relativistic viewing effect in which plasma moving nearly toward the observer appears to cross the sky faster than light. The apparent speed does not mean matter has exceeded the universal speed limit; it indicates a flow directed close to our line of sight and moving at a very high fraction of light speed.

Interactions with the environment

Time-domain observations can reveal events that are invisible in a static outline. An NRAO report covering 16 months of VLBA observations associated radio flickering at one jet location with a cloud of gas apparently being struck by the jet. Such a change can identify where the outflow transfers energy to material around the host galaxy.

The M87 example: seeing the shadow and jet together

M87 is about 55 million light-years away, and its central black hole has a mass of roughly 6.5 billion Suns, according to the European Southern Observatory (ESO). In observations made in 2018, the Global Millimeter VLBI Array (GMVA), ALMA and the Greenland Telescope were linked to produce an image showing the black-hole shadow and the jet at the same time.

ESO describes the GMVA contribution as involving 14 radio telescopes in Europe and North America, with ALMA and the Greenland Telescope added to the network. The result was important because it placed the jet’s base in context: researchers could examine the outflow alongside the matter and radio-emitting region immediately surrounding the black hole, rather than studying the jet only after it had travelled farther away.

NRAO’s account emphasizes the complementary roles of the facilities. The Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) supplied a view containing both the jet and the black hole; ALMA resolved the bright radio core; and the Green Bank Telescope’s sensitivity helped resolve ring structure on multiple scales. No single instrument provided that complete combination of field of view, sensitivity and resolution.

Jae-Young Kim of Kyungpook National University and the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy described the significance this way: “This new image completes the picture by showing the region around the black hole and the jet at the same time.”

How observing setups are chosen

There is no universal “best” radio array. The useful configuration depends on the target, frequency, desired angular scale and whether the priority is a faint extended jet, the compact launch region or rapid variability.

Design factor What it controls Why it matters for jets
Baseline length and angular resolution The smallest separations the array can distinguish Long VLBI baselines are needed to isolate the jet base near the black hole.
Sensitivity and collecting area How faint a radio feature can be detected reliably Higher sensitivity helps recover weak jet emission and ring structure.
Observing wavelength or frequency Which portions of the radio-emitting region are emphasized Different wavelengths can probe different depths and scales in the source.
Geographic baseline coverage How many spatial directions and scales are sampled More complete coverage supports a more faithful image reconstruction.
Time cadence How quickly changes can be tracked Frequent observations can reveal moving knots, flickering and interactions.
Polarization capability Whether magnetic-field-related information is measured Full-polarization images add information beyond total radio brightness.

The published sources do not provide one apples-to-apples numerical performance table for every facility involved in these campaigns. Actual sensitivity and resolvability vary with array configuration, frequency, target brightness, weather and observing details, so a quoted result should always be tied to the specific experiment that produced it.

A typical jet-imaging workflow

  1. Select the target and scientific question. The team decides whether it needs the highest possible resolution at the launch point, a wider view of the downstream jet, polarization, or measurements on a particular time scale.
  2. Choose stations and wavelengths. Facilities are selected for baseline geography, sensitivity, collecting area and frequency coverage. Adding a sensitive southern station, for example, can improve access to particular structures in a southern or low-declination target.
  3. Synchronize the observing run. All participating antennas observe the source during coordinated sessions while recording timing information with their radio data.
  4. Correlate the recordings. The separately recorded signals are combined after the observation so that measurements from each antenna pair can be compared.
  5. Construct images at the required scales. The array data are reconstructed into maps of compact and extended radio emission. Additional baselines can improve fidelity, while missing orientations can leave some structures less certain.
  6. Measure physical changes. Teams compare brightness, polarization and feature positions across wavelengths and dates. Motion estimates require identifying corresponding features rather than assuming every bright knot is the same object.
  7. Compare the radio map with other evidence. In M87, the combined radio image was especially valuable because it connected the jet base to the shadow and surrounding matter. The same principle can be applied when interpreting a different active galaxy.

What radio observations can—and cannot—establish

  • They can show where radio-emitting plasma is concentrated. Compact cores, knots, bends and rings can be mapped when the array has suitable resolution and sensitivity.
  • They can test how a jet changes. Multi-epoch data reveal variability, apparent motion, polarization evolution and localized interactions with surrounding gas.
  • They can connect the jet to its launch environment. M87 demonstrates that coordinated global observations can place the jet base beside the black-hole shadow in one reconstructed view.
  • They do not have one universal detection threshold. The minimum detectable brightness and the smallest resolvable feature depend on the array, frequency, target and observing setup.
  • They do not make every part of a jet equally visible. A faint or poorly sampled feature may be absent from a map because of sensitivity or incomplete baseline coverage, not because no plasma exists there.

The central idea is therefore a chain of measurements: radio emission reveals the energetic plasma; interferometry combines separated antennas; VLBI supplies the angular resolution; and repeated, multi-wavelength observations turn a static radio map into evidence about motion, magnetic structure and interactions. That combination is how astronomers investigate jets launched close to supermassive black holes even when the galaxies themselves are millions of light-years away.
