What “AI Mode in Chrome” does with your tabs
AI Mode in Chrome is Google Search’s AI search experience. You select recent tabs to include with a query, and AI Mode can use those sources to answer and provide links. On desktop, links opened from AI Mode appear beside it, so you can inspect a page and continue asking questions while the search context stays visible. Google announced this workflow on April 16, 2026.

This is not the same feature name as Gemini in Chrome. Google describes Gemini in Chrome separately as a browsing assistant, with its own tab-sharing controls and capabilities. The products overlap in some ways, but their names and controls are not interchangeable. Google’s Gemini in Chrome announcement describes that separate experience.

How to add tabs to an AI Mode query
On a computer
- Open a Chrome New Tab page and enter AI Mode.
- Choose the add-context or plus control, then select recent tabs. Google’s help says “Find most recent tabs” can show tabs open in the window; choose “Show more” to see additional tabs.
- Enter your question. AI Mode opens the response, and on desktop you can open linked pages beside it and ask follow-up questions.
The same add-context menu may offer files and images. For the documented side-by-side tab and file workflow, Google says you must be signed in to Chrome and not in Incognito mode. See Google Chrome Help: Use AI to search & ask about your tabs.

On Android or iPhone
Google documents AI Mode entry points on Android and iOS, with a menu that can add the current tab, multiple tabs, files, images, and other inputs. The exact controls can vary with platform and rollout, so use the options visible in your Chrome version rather than expecting an identical menu on every device. Questions that work well across selected tabs
Ask a focused question that tells AI Mode what to extract or compare. Google’s examples include combining open pages about local hiking trails and asking for similar kid-friendly trails elsewhere, or using class notes, lecture slides, and academic papers to ask for more examples of a statistics concept. Those are examples Google gives, not independently tested outcomes. Google’s announcement provides both.

A practical extension is to select several product or research pages and ask for a comparison against criteria you specify. Treat the response as a starting point, not a guaranteed comparison format: open the linked pages and confirm important specifications or claims directly.
Availability and requirements
AI Mode in Chrome is not available to everyone or on every device. Google says the rollout is gradual outside the U.S. and for non-English languages; the April 2026 announcement said its described updates were then available in the U.S., with broader expansion planned. Whether the controls appear depends on factors such as account, device, language, and region, and rollout details may change. Check your own Chrome interface for availability. - Do not use Incognito mode for that workflow.
What Google says about tab data and privacy
Google Chrome Help says temporary data such as screenshots, Lens selections, and PDF captures lasts only for the session and is not saved. It also says titles and URLs of tabs added to a thread are kept for a specific number of months to support returning to conversations; the help text cited here does not specify the duration.
Google further says raw data from public and private URLs is not used for human review, personalization, ad targeting, or training AI models. These statements describe the AI Mode tab workflow covered by that help page; they should not be read as a policy description for every Google AI feature or other browser data. Check important answers against their sources
Google warns that “AI responses may include mistakes.” Follow the links in an answer and verify consequential details on the original pages, especially when accuracy matters. Google Chrome Help.
