For a new computer, 8 GB is a reasonable baseline for light everyday use, while 16 GB is a safer choice for multitasking and longer-term use. Editing, gaming, and other demanding projects may call for more. These are recommendations, not guarantees: the right amount depends on your operating system, apps, and how you use them. Before buying or upgrading, check the exact computer’s supported memory and whether it can be upgraded.
What RAM does—and why the amount matters
RAM is temporary working memory that holds the apps and data a computer is using. It is cleared when the computer shuts down or restarts. With more available memory, a device can keep more work active at once; Microsoft puts it this way: “The more memory a device has, the more it can do at the same time without slowdowns in performance.”

More RAM is not automatically a speed upgrade. It helps when your active workload is constrained by memory. If memory is not the bottleneck, adding capacity may make little noticeable difference.
How much RAM to choose for your workload
There is no single amount that suits everyone. The figures below are vendor recommendations, not a universal standard or a guarantee of performance.
#1 Best Overall
- Boosts System Performance: 32GB DDR5 RAM laptop memory kit (2x16GB) that operates at 5600MHz, 5200MHz, or 4800MHz to improve multitasking and system responsiveness for smoother performance
- Accelerated gaming performance: Every millisecond gained in fast-paced gameplay counts—power through heavy workloads and benefit from versatile downclocking and higher frame rates
- Optimized DDR5 compatibility: Best for 12th Gen Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000 Series processors — Intel XMP 3.0 and AMD EXPO also supported on the same RAM module
- Trusted Micron Quality: Backed by 42 years of memory expertise, this DDR5 RAM is rigorously tested at both component and module levels, ensuring top performance and reliability
- ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8
| Use | Amount to consider | Basis and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Light browsing, documents, or streaming | At least 4 GB for basic use; 8 GB for a longer-term choice | Microsoft’s consumer guidance. The 4 GB figure is a basic-use suggestion, not a comfort guarantee. |
| Everyday use, study, or remote work | 8 GB as a baseline; consider 16 GB | Microsoft recommends 8 GB for longer-term use. HP’s 2026 buyer guide recommends 16 GB for everyday users, students, and remote workers. |
| Gaming | Consider 16–32 GB | HP’s 2026 buyer guide; actual needs depend on the game and the rest of the system. |
| Photo or video editing and other creative work | 16 GB or more; HP suggests 32–64 GB for creative workloads | Microsoft says 16 GB or more may suit editing or high-performance projects. HP’s 2026 buyer guide gives the higher range for creative work. |
For Windows 11, Microsoft lists 4 GB as the minimum memory requirement. That is an installation minimum, not a promise that demanding or modern multitasking will feel comfortable. Check the requirements for the particular applications you plan to run, especially for games, editing software, 3D work, and local AI tools.

Windows: inspect memory in Task Manager
Open Task Manager > Performance > Memory. Kingston’s February 2024 guide says this view reports installed capacity, slots, form factor, speed, and current usage. Use it as a starting point, then verify the supported configuration for your exact computer model before purchasing memory.

Mac: look at Memory Pressure in Activity Monitor
Open Activity Monitor > Memory and review Memory Pressure while using your usual apps. Apple explains that the view includes physical memory, app and wired memory, compression, cached files, and swap used. Green pressure indicates efficient use; yellow suggests the Mac may eventually need more memory; red indicates it needs more RAM. Apple also cautions: “When you have free or unused memory, your computer performance does not necessarily improve.” A high-looking usage number on its own is not enough to establish that an upgrade will help.
Verify compatibility before buying RAM
Memory is not a one-size-fits-all purchase. A computer may have a limit on total capacity, a specific memory generation or form factor, a fixed number of slots, or soldered memory that cannot be replaced. Confirm all of the following for the exact model and configuration:
Rank #3
- Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.
- G.SKILL Flare X5 Series DDR5 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F5-6000J3636F16GX2-FX5
- Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
- Includes JEDEC default profile, and AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 memory overclock profile
- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
- Whether the memory is upgradeable or soldered.
- Supported memory type, maximum capacity, and speed.
- Available slots and whether existing modules must be replaced.
- Form factor and any channel or module requirements.
Consult the computer maker’s model-specific specifications or maintenance guide. A compatible upgrade kit is appropriate only after confirming both upgradeability and a match for the system’s supported specifications. Kingston’s February 2024 guide covers checking a current configuration; HP’s 2026 guide advises checking the exact model’s maintenance documentation and notes that some laptops use soldered memory.

If you are choosing a configuration at purchase, consider how many demanding apps you keep open together and whether your workload is likely to grow. More memory can provide headroom, but paying for capacity your workload cannot use is not inherently beneficial. The trade-off matters especially on computers whose memory cannot be upgraded later: a fixed configuration that is just adequate today may be restrictive if your apps or habits change.

There is no independent population study in the cited sources establishing one amount as right for the “typical user.” Microsoft’s consumer guidance and HP’s buyer guide offer useful starting points, but your software requirements and the computer’s design should decide the final choice.
