To get a useful answer from an AI, state what you want it to do, give the relevant context, and specify the kind of response you can use. Then check the result and clarify what needs changing. You do not need a long prompt for every question: include only details that could affect the answer.
What to include in an AI prompt
A prompt is simply the request you give an AI assistant. Rather than entering a few broad keywords, describe the task and the outcome you need in ordinary language. OpenAI recommends focusing on the objective and using goal-driven language in its ChatGPT prompting guidance.

1. Name the task and desired outcome
Say what the assistant should do and what a successful result would help you accomplish. For example, “Draft a short, friendly email asking to reschedule a dentist appointment” is more actionable than “dentist appointment email.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2. Add relevant context
Include details that change what a good answer looks like: who it is for, the situation, important constraints, or source material the assistant should use. Google’s Gemini prompt-writing guidance recommends adding context and specific keywords. OpenAI Academy likewise recommends relevant context, while cautioning that unrelated information can make a response less helpful.

For instance, if you need a message to a landlord, mention the issue, what you have already tried, and the outcome you want. Avoid adding personal background that has no bearing on the message.
3. Specify the answer’s format, audience, or tone
When presentation matters, say so: “Give me three options in a table, each under 50 words, for a nontechnical reader.” You can ask for a list, table, step-by-step explanation, brief summary, or a particular tone. OpenAI Academy’s ChatGPT basics guide recommends guiding tone and format.

4. Give an example when words are not enough
If you have a specific style or structure in mind, include a short example or describe what to imitate. An example can make an unclear preference concrete; it is optional, not a required ingredient in every prompt.
A reusable prompt template
Use this as a starting point, leaving out anything that does not matter:

Help me [task or outcome]. This is for [audience or situation]. Keep in mind [relevant context and constraints]. Return it as [format, length, or tone]. If something important is missing, ask me.
For a simple everyday question, a single clear sentence may be enough. Add detail when it helps the assistant tailor the response; piling on unrelated instructions can make the request harder to answer well. Meta’s consumer AI guidance also cautions that an overly broad or overloaded request can lead to a scattered response.

How to improve an answer that misses the mark
Read the reply against your actual need. If it is too vague, too long, or aimed at the wrong audience, identify the specific gap and request a focused revision instead of starting over with a completely different prompt.
- Point out what is missing. For example: “You explained the options, but not their main trade-offs.”
- Give a precise adjustment. Try: “Compare the two choices in a table, focusing on cost and ease of use.”
- Check the revision. If it still does not fit, clarify the remaining issue or narrow the request further.
OpenAI’s guidance on asking ChatGPT questions describes prompting as a conversation: refine requests based on initial answers and keep experimenting. Google similarly recommends fine-tuning prompts when results do not meet expectations, as reported in the Associated Press’s 2025 explainer on Google’s Gemini guide.

What a well-written prompt can—and cannot—do
Clear instructions help an AI tailor its response to your task, but no universal prompt formula guarantees an accurate or suitable answer across different models and questions. Treat the response as something to assess: check whether it addresses the request, respects your constraints, and is fit for how you plan to use it. If an important detail is missing, provide it and ask again.
