Capture the page as soon as you see it, preserve the original files unchanged, and keep the capture with records that connect it to your transaction and complaint. Save the full URL, note the date, time and time zone, and capture the relevant wording with enough surrounding page context to identify it. A screenshot can help document what you observed, but it does not by itself establish when the page first appeared or guarantee that it will be admitted as evidence.
Capture the webpage before it changes
Start with the exact page where the disputed statement appears: for example, a product listing, advertised price, refund promise, warranty term, delivery claim or response to a complaint. A homepage or search-result snippet may not show the wording or context you need.

- Record the full URL. Copy it into a note, including the specific product, offer or policy path. If the page is behind an account or changes by location, record that context and the steps you used to reach it.
- Write down the capture time. Note the date, time and time zone in a separate file. Do not rely only on the device clock or the file’s metadata as proof of when the page existed.
- Capture the page in context. Include the seller or site identity, heading, complete relevant wording and any price or promise at issue. Capture enough surrounding content to identify what the statement refers to. For a long page, make overlapping screenshots or save a complete PDF rather than keeping only a cropped excerpt.
- Save a page copy where practical. In a desktop browser, use its print function and choose “Save as PDF.” You can also use the browser’s “Save page” function, but a saved webpage may not preserve dynamic or account-specific content faithfully. Keep the screenshot and PDF as separate files.
- Keep the originals untouched. Do not crop, annotate, convert or overwrite your only copy. If you need labels or explanations, make them on a clearly marked working copy and retain the original capture.
For a full-page capture in Chrome, one option is to open the page, open DevTools, choose the DevTools menu, select “Run command,” and search for “Capture full size screenshot.” Browser interfaces can change; if that command is unavailable in your version, use the browser’s print-to-PDF function or capture overlapping screenshots. Do not assume that a browser-generated image or PDF proves the page’s publication date.
Keep an index alongside the files
Use consistent file names and a simple index so you can locate each item and explain what it shows. For example:

These are naming examples, not an official prescribed format. Keep an untouched archive of original files separate from any copies prepared for filing. Back up the archive in a second location. An optional USB flash drive can provide an offline copy, but removable storage does not establish authenticity or capture time and is not, by itself, a legal requirement identified here.
Preserve the records that connect the page to your dispute
A webpage is easier to understand alongside the transaction and complaint history. Keep relevant records together, in their original form where possible:

If a page is interactive, changes according to account or location, or cannot be saved faithfully, write down how you viewed it and the account or device context. Prepare an indexed bundle for an online consumer complaint
The Government’s e-Jagriti portal says that e-Daakhil, OCMS, CMS and Confonet were subsumed into e-Jagriti, which was made available from 1 January 2025. Start at the e-Jagriti portal and consult its current help documents rather than relying on an older e-Daakhil guide without checking whether it has been superseded.

The e-Jagriti consumer-complaint filing guide lists an index; a proforma for filing a consumer complaint; a synopsis with a list of dates and events; a memo of parties; a consumer complaint with a notarised affidavit; and options for adding annexures or documents and for applications or a vakalatnama. The portal’s screens and requirements may change, and filing requirements can depend on the filing type. Check the live help material and the relevant commission’s instructions before submitting.
- Prepare the complaint documents in the order and format requested by the current portal instructions.
- Give each supporting item a clear, consistent annexure number and include it in your index.
- Make the filed copy readable and legible; keep your untouched original archive separately.
- Check that the index, annexure labels and uploaded files agree, and retain the filing records and any acknowledgement.
The Department of Consumer Affairs describes online filing before the commission with jurisdiction over the consumer’s residence or work, irrespective of where the transaction occurred, and provides for virtual hearings. Check current official guidance for the process that applies to your complaint.

Understand what a screenshot can and cannot establish
Preserving a page and proving the legal status of an electronic record are different tasks. A screenshot may help show the wording you observed, but its file timestamp alone does not prove when that content first appeared, that it was continuously available, or that the image has not been altered.
The Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023 has been in force since 1 July 2024, according to India Code. Section 61 addresses electronic or digital records and says they are not to be denied admissibility solely because they are electronic, subject to section 63. Section 63 describes conditions for computer outputs; subsection (4) requires a certificate to accompany the electronic record at each instance when it is submitted for admission under that provision.

Those statutory provisions do not mean that every consumer filing always needs the same certificate, or that an informal screenshot automatically satisfies every requirement. The official material does not settle how the requirements apply in every consumer-commission case. If the record is central to a live dispute, seek current legal advice or ask the relevant commission about its instructions for your filing.

Common capture problems and practical fixes
- The screenshot cuts off relevant wording. Capture the full page or take overlapping screenshots, and save a complete PDF when practical. Keep enough context to identify the site, heading and statement.
- The page changes by account, location or interaction. Record the steps, account or device context used to view it, and capture the page after reaching the relevant state. Do not imply that a later reconstruction is an original capture made at an earlier time.
- The PDF or saved page omits dynamic content. Keep a screenshot as well, and note what the browser displayed and what the saved copy omitted. A saved-page file is not necessarily a faithful record of interactive content.
- You need to explain or highlight a detail. Add annotations to a clearly labeled working copy. Preserve the unmarked original separately.
- You cannot locate an item in the complaint bundle. Add a descriptive filename and index entry with its capture time, source URL and a short note of what it shows; make the annexure numbering consistent across the index and copies.

Do not include passwords or unnecessary sensitive credentials. Keep relevant account context in your private notes, and prepare filing copies carefully so unrelated personal or financial information is not exposed.
