Use both a screenshot and a web-archive capture when you need to preserve an e-commerce product page: the screenshot records what it looked like, while an HTML-based capture with associated resources can retain page structure and support replay. Neither guarantees a complete record of a dynamic retailer site. Save the original URL, capture date and time, and the method used alongside both files.
What each capture preserves

For a preservation-oriented capture, retain associated files such as images rather than only an HTML page that points to them. The National Archives transfer guidance calls for complete content and associated files (National Archives guidance).

Choose a capture approach
Use a screenshot for a quick visual reference
A screenshot is easy to inspect and can record visible details such as the displayed price, product title, selected variant, and page layout. It is not a substitute for a web capture when you need links, structure, or associated resources.
Use a WARC or WACZ web archive when replay matters
WARC is a digital file format used to aggregate web resources and capture-related record information. The Library of Congress recommends it for web archives; its guidance also recognizes WACZ, used by the Webrecorder project, as an acceptable web-archive format (Library of Congress recommended formats; WARC format description). These are file formats, not products or capture guarantees.

Consider local browser capture for an interactive page
ArchiveWeb.page documents a workflow for capturing while browsing, keeping data locally unless you share it, viewing captures offline, and exporting WARC or WACZ. Those are vendor-described capabilities, not independent test results; do not assume any retailer page will be captured faithfully. See ArchiveWeb.page for its current product information.
Capture the product page and document its context
- Open the exact product URL. Record the URL as displayed in the browser, including relevant query parameters if they identify a variant or campaign. Note whether the page required an account, region selection, or other session state.
- Set the visible state you want to document. Select the relevant size, color, or other variant; expand any details that matter; and note whether price, stock, or shipping information is tied to a selected location or account.
- Capture the page in both forms. Take a screenshot for visual inspection, then use a web-archive capture workflow that records the page and associated resources. For browser-based capture, ArchiveWeb.page describes capturing during browsing and exporting WARC or WACZ (product documentation).
- Check what was actually captured. Open the screenshot and, where possible, replay the archive. Verify product images, selected options, links, and interactive areas rather than assuming they survived capture.
- Save provenance with the files. Keep the original URL, capture date and time, and a short note describing the selected product state and capture method. The Library of Congress recommends identifying the archiving institution and capture date and time, and distinguishing archive functionality from the live site (recommended formats guidance).
What may be missing from a replay
Web capture is not guaranteed to preserve all content. The Library of Congress identifies multimedia-rich content, streaming media, deep-web content, and databases as difficult or unpreservable areas (web-archive quality factors). On a product page, gallery images, variant selectors, inventory indicators, or personalized pricing may depend on scripts, a session, user interaction, or data fetched after the initial load. Inspect the resulting capture for those specific elements.

When sharing or later consulting an archive, distinguish what the captured page can do from what the retailer’s live site can do. Frequently Asked Questions
Does a screenshot alone count as a web archive?
It is a visual record, but it does not retain the page’s hypertext functionality. The National Archives’ statement concerns its records-transfer context, not whether a screenshot can be useful for other purposes.
Does WARC guarantee that a product page will replay exactly as it appeared?
No. WARC can package web resources and capture-related information, but dynamic or inaccessible content may not be preserved or replay correctly.
