A small church can keep a YouTube Live feed running by sending recorded sermons through an encoder. The simplest do-it-yourself option is OBS on a church computer; the computer and internet connection must stay available. A cloud service can play uploaded recordings without leaving a church computer on. Either way, first confirm the channel can livestream, make sure the church has rebroadcast rights, and test the complete program before relying on it.
Can you loop recorded sermons on YouTube Live?
Yes. YouTube Live receives a live feed from an encoder; it is not the same as uploading an ordinary sermon video. An encoder can send a prerecorded file or playlist as the channel’s live program, including repeatedly. For a continuous feed, decide how viewers will find individual sermons and how the church will preserve them separately: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, so do not count on one complete archive for an uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours. YouTube’s encoder livestream guide explains stream setup and archiving.

What to prepare before going live
Confirm livestream access
The channel must be verified and must not have had livestreaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time livestream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned launch. YouTube’s requirements can change; check the channel and current guidance when setting up.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck permissions for every part of the recording
Confirm the church has permission to rebroadcast each sermon recording and all included material, such as music, images, or readings. Having a copy of a recording does not by itself establish permission to stream it. A rights issue can lead to a claim, interruption, or other platform action, so resolve uncertain permissions before broadcasting.

Choose the program and archive plan
Decide whether to repeat one sermon or play several in sequence, how often the sequence should repeat, and who will check the feed. If viewers need access to individual sermons later, keep the original files and upload or organize them as separate videos rather than relying on an over-12-hour live archive.
Set up YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and open Go Live.
- Create or schedule the livestream and set its title, visibility, and other watch-page details.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the encoder. The key is a credential: share it only with the person configuring the encoder, and do not publish it. Anyone with access may be able to send a feed to the channel.
- Keep the stream’s YouTube preview or Live Control Room available during setup so you can confirm that the incoming video and audio are correct before relying on the broadcast.
Option 1: Loop sermons locally with OBS
This path uses a computer at the church, the sermon files stored on it, OBS, power, and a sufficiently stable internet connection. YouTube notes that expensive equipment is not necessary to get started, so first check whether the church already has a suitable computer and connection.

Connect OBS to the YouTube stream
- Install and open OBS Studio on the computer that will run the feed.
- In OBS, open Settings and then Stream. Choose YouTube as the service and enter the stream key, or use the connection method shown in your OBS and YouTube setup. Keep the key private.
- Set up a scene with the sermon video and audio. Make sure the image fills the intended frame and that the sermon audio is routed through OBS.
Loop one sermon
- In the scene’s Sources box, select + and add a Media Source.
- Choose the sermon video file and enable Loop in the source properties. OBS describes this control as specifying whether the file plays again once playback has completed. Its controls are documented in the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Check that the file plays with sound and returns to the start as expected. Avoid adding unrelated desktop audio or notifications to the broadcast.
Loop a playlist of sermons
- For a sequence of files, add a VLC Video source in OBS and select the sermon files for its playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist in the source settings, then verify the order, transitions, and restart behavior in OBS’s preview.
- Keep the source files available at the paths OBS uses. Moving or renaming them can break the playlist.
Start and check the feed
- Use OBS’s Start Streaming control.
- In YouTube’s live dashboard, wait for the incoming preview and check stream health before making the event public or treating it as operational.
- Listen to the audio on another device and watch enough of the program to confirm the sermon is framed properly and the playlist advances or loops correctly.
With this arrangement, OBS and the sermon files run locally. The computer must remain powered on, OBS must stay connected, and the church’s internet connection must continue carrying the stream.

Choose video and network settings that your connection can sustain
YouTube’s current encoder guide supports RTMP/RTMPS workflows. Its settings guidance lists H.264 for RTMP video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Settings depend on the chosen resolution and frame rate; YouTube’s table recommends a 2 Mbps video bitrate for 720p at 30 fps. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guide for the applicable table and current instructions.

Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.
- Choose a resolution and bitrate the church’s sustained upload can support; a higher setting is not better if the connection cannot carry it steadily.
- YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving upload headroom, with 20% recommended. Test the actual stream rather than assuming the advertised connection speed is available continuously.
- Check YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators during a test. Listen for clear, continuous audio and look for freezes, dropped frames, or a picture that does not match the audio.
Option 2: Use a cloud service instead of a church computer
A cloud continuous-streaming service plays uploaded recordings on a remote server and sends the feed to YouTube. This avoids depending on a church computer staying on, but the church then depends on the provider, the uploaded files, valid YouTube credentials, and the internet for setup and management. For example, Looping Stream describes a workflow of uploading videos, arranging a playlist, and broadcasting continuously from its service; that is the provider’s description, not an independent uptime or performance guarantee. Check any service’s current terms, limits, and pricing before choosing it.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping a channel live from uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera feed. Upload the sermon recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing needs to stay running at the church. Each slot streams uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers; it includes 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are supported in India; card checkout is available worldwide. The same product is included on every plan; only the billing length changes. Review the service details and terms before choosing a provider.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test, monitor, and recover from problems
Before launch
- Run a test with the same type of sermon video and audio planned for the public feed.
- Check the YouTube preview, stream health, sound level, picture framing, and playlist behavior.
- Confirm the public watch page opens as intended and that the correct stream is being sent to the correct channel.
- Assign someone to check the live dashboard periodically and respond if the feed stops or quality falls.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| No incoming signal in YouTube | OBS is not streaming, the stream key is wrong, or the channel’s livestream setup is not ready. | Check OBS’s streaming status and destination, verify the key in the correct channel’s settings, and confirm livestream access is enabled. |
| Video freezes, buffers, or loses quality | The upload connection cannot sustain the selected output or is unstable. | Check YouTube stream health, test the sustained upload, lower the output resolution or bitrate, and leave the recommended upload headroom. |
| Video plays but sermon audio is missing or unclear | The source or OBS audio routing is incorrect, or the source itself has an audio problem. | Check the Media Source’s audio and OBS mixer meters, then listen to the YouTube preview from another device before continuing. |
| A sermon does not repeat or the playlist stops | The loop setting is off, the playlist is not configured to repeat, or a media file has moved or become unavailable. | Check Loop for a single Media Source or Loop Playlist for a VLC Video source, and confirm all files remain accessible. |
| The stream ends when nobody is at church | The local computer, OBS, power, or internet connection stopped. | Restore power or connectivity and restart the encoder. If avoiding an always-on local computer is essential, compare a cloud workflow and its provider dependencies. |
| A stream archive is incomplete or unavailable as one video | The continuous stream exceeded YouTube’s automatic-archive duration. | Plan separate sermon uploads or other preservation; do not assume a stream longer than 12 hours will become one complete archive. |
Costs and operating trade-offs
The local OBS route does not inherently require buying encoder hardware if the church already has a suitable computer, but it uses that computer, power, and internet connection for the duration. A cloud service avoids that local always-on requirement but has provider pricing and service terms to assess. There is no universal cheapest or most reliable choice: compare the equipment and connection the church already has with the provider’s current price, storage limits, and operating terms.
