Capture the screenshot and write a UTC sidecar
This Node.js example records the screenshot start time immediately before capture. It saves the image and a JSON manifest beside it, including the source URL and a timestamp label. Install Playwright in your project and install its Chromium browser before running the script.

}The start and completion values are separate because screenshot capture takes time. If only one timestamp is needed, keep the one that matches your purpose and label it accordingly. The example uses fullPage: true; omit that option to capture the current viewport instead. Playwright documents saving screenshots to a path and full-page capture in its Screenshots guide, while JavaScript’s toISOString() documentation describes its UTC representation.

Choose what the timestamp means
new Date().toISOString() returns a UTC date-time string with a Z suffix and millisecond precision, for example 2026-10-03T12:34:56.789Z. Record the timestamp in the manifest rather than relying on a filename alone. A filename can help organize files, but the sidecar can also preserve the original URL and capture settings.

page.screenshot(). This example includes that value ascaptureStartedAt. - Capture completion: record after the screenshot promise resolves, as
captureCompletedAtdoes. - Navigation time: if you also need to document when navigation finished, add a separately named field after
page.goto(); do not describe it as the image capture time.
For repeatability, consider recording the browser name and version, Playwright version, viewport, device scale factor, screenshot options, and any navigation errors. Those are useful workflow metadata; Playwright does not automatically create this preservation manifest for you.
Pick the screenshot scope and output deliberately
Viewport or full page
Without fullPage: true, Playwright captures the current viewport. With it, the screenshot covers the full scrollable page. To capture a particular element rather than the whole page, use a locator’s screenshot method, such as await page.locator('main').screenshot({ path: 'main.png' }). Make sure the selector identifies the intended element on the target page.
Image bytes or a file
Supplying path writes the screenshot to a file. Calling page.screenshot() without a path returns image bytes, which you can pass to your own storage or processing code. In either case, save the metadata alongside the resulting image so the timestamp and source remain associated with it.

Format, scale, and repeatability
Playwright supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP output, along with options including scale, clipping, masking, caret visibility, and animation handling. Choose the format and options to fit the evidence you need, and include relevant settings in the manifest if another person must reproduce the capture. A timestamp in a sidecar is workflow metadata, not text burned into the screenshot; adding visible timestamp text changes the captured image.
Understand what a screenshot archive preserves
A screenshot is a visual record of what was rendered at capture time. On its own, it does not preserve the site’s underlying resources, network responses, interactive state, or behavior for later replay. A page may also depend on authenticated or externally hosted content that is not represented fully in a single image.
For web preservation rather than a visual record alone, the Library of Congress identifies WARC as its preferred web-archive format. WARC packages web resources and related information; its records include required date, type, and length fields. The Library also notes that current web capture tools may not preserve streaming media, deep-web content, or databases. A screenshot and a WARC capture therefore serve different purposes, and neither should be described as preserving content beyond its actual scope. Troubleshooting
The script cannot find Playwright or Chromium
Install the Playwright package in the project where the script runs and install the browser binary for it. A package installation alone may not have downloaded Chromium. Also confirm your Node.js setup supports the script’s ES module imports.
Navigation fails or the screenshot is incomplete
Check the rejected navigation promise and any page errors rather than writing metadata that implies a successful capture. waitUntil: 'load' waits for the page load event; it does not establish that every delayed or externally loaded element is ready. If a target element appears later, wait for that element explicitly before capturing it, and record the wait or any failure in your manifest.

The UTC time seems different from the computer’s local time
toISOString() intentionally produces UTC, regardless of the machine’s local timezone. The trailing Z indicates UTC; do not append a local timezone label or convert the value again.
The timestamp is absent from the image
That is expected: the example stores it in capture.json. If you need visible text in the pixels, you must deliberately alter or annotate the image, which changes the visual evidence. Keep the original screenshot as well if that distinction matters.
The full-page image is unusually large
A full-page screenshot covers the scrollable document and may be much taller than the viewport. Use viewport capture or a locator screenshot when those match the evidence you need, and choose image format and scale intentionally.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Z in an ISO timestamp mean UTC?
Yes. In a value produced by JavaScript’s toISOString(), the trailing Z identifies UTC.
Is a timestamped screenshot a WARC archive?
No. A screenshot is a visual record; WARC is intended to package web resources and associated information for web archiving.
