For a quick, shareable snapshot, submit the exact page URL to the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine using Save Page Now, then open and check the timestamped archive link it returns. Save a separate local copy as well if the page matters: a public snapshot is not a complete website backup, and it may omit assets or interactive features.
Save a page to the Wayback Machine
- Copy the full URL of the specific webpage you need—not just the site’s homepage.
- Open the Wayback Machine and choose Save Page Now.
- Paste the URL and submit it. Wait for the result page; submitting the form alone does not confirm that a capture succeeded.
- Copy the timestamped archived URL. Open it in a separate tab and check the text and any images, charts, tables, or other details you need to preserve.
Internet Archive describes the result as a permanent URL, but Save Page Now captures a single page—not multiple pages, a directory, or an entire site. It may capture images and CSS, but not outlinks. Keep a local copy you control
A local file gives you a copy you can keep even if the public archive does not capture everything. While the page still loads, use your browser’s save-page option or print-to-PDF feature. Choose a useful filename, and record the original URL and the date you saved it alongside the file.
A PDF is convenient for reading and reference, but it can flatten or omit interactive elements. A saved webpage may retain more of the page’s structure, but it is still not a guaranteed, fully functioning copy of the original site. If an exact visual record matters, consider keeping a screenshot too.

What an archived page may not preserve
A remote archive is a snapshot of what its crawler could access, not a full working copy of a site. Internet Archive says pages may be missing when crawlers did not discover them, when they are password-protected, blocked by robots.txt, otherwise inaccessible, or excluded at an owner’s request. JavaScript-driven behavior can be difficult to capture, and missing assets can leave broken images. An incomplete replay may use a closest-date capture or reach for the live page, so inspect the archived URL rather than assuming it is complete. The UK Government Web Archive likewise cautions that a remote snapshot may not preserve interactive features; some links, including links inside documents, may fail or lead to the live web. If the capture fails or is incomplete
- Try the local save or print-to-PDF method while the page is still accessible.
- Check that you submitted the specific page URL and that the returned archive link opens.
- If an element is missing, preserve it separately—for example, save the relevant chart or document where permitted.
- For another public snapshot, try a second archive service, but do not assume a different crawler will capture every asset or interaction.
Preserve context and cite the archive
Keep the original URL, the archived URL, the capture date, and—when relevant—the date you accessed the archived page. Internet Archive’s citation guidance recommends citing the webpage as usual and adding Wayback Machine information. How to cite the Wayback Machine
For records where context and completeness matter, retain useful surrounding information as well as the page itself. Do not treat a snapshot as a certified record or site backup
A Wayback capture can be useful evidence of what a public page showed at a particular time, but it should not automatically be treated as a legally authenticated record. Internet Archive says the Wayback Machine was not expressly designed for legal use and directs people seeking certified records to its affidavit request process. Likewise, one saved page is not a restorable copy of a website. If you need recurring preservation of a collection, assess a managed crawl such as Archive-It; if you need only one page, save that page and keep a local copy.
