To archive a webpage as one HTML file with its images and other resources, use the free, open-source SingleFile browser extension. Open the page, wait for it to finish loading, then click the SingleFile toolbar button. A plain HTML-only save is not the same thing: Firefox’s “Web page, HTML only” option saves the markup without pictures.
Save a webpage as one resource-inclusive HTML file
- Install SingleFile from the official browser store for your browser. The project lists versions for Firefox, Firefox for Android, Chrome, Safari, and Microsoft Edge; current availability and interface details can vary by browser.
- Open the webpage you want to keep and wait for it to finish loading. This gives the extension a chance to capture the page as displayed.
- Click the SingleFile toolbar button. It processes the page and saves an HTML file intended to include resources such as CSS, images, fonts, and frames.
- Choose an identifiable location for the downloaded file, then open it locally in a browser to check the result. This check is practical advice: the extension’s stated purpose does not guarantee that every site or feature will be reproduced perfectly.
SingleFile can also save selected content or a frame through its context-menu options. If images or iframes appear to be missing because they load only as you scroll, try the extension’s documented option to load deferred images or iframes before capture. If you only need the main article, saving a selection can reduce the captured material.

What “one HTML file” does—and does not—mean
A resource-inclusive archive embeds page resources in the saved file; it is different from saving only the original HTML markup. A snapshot is also different from a working copy of the live site: it does not archive every page linked from the current one, and interactive or dynamically generated features may not behave the same offline. The SingleFile documentation describes saving pages and resources but does not promise universal fidelity for authenticated content, streamed media, or every site-specific interaction.
Compare the main save formats
| Format | Output and intended use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Firefox “Web page, HTML only” | One HTML file with the original page markup. | Mozilla says it saves the original page without pictures. |
| Firefox “Web page, complete” | An HTML file plus a directory for pictures and other necessary files. | Not a single-file archive; Mozilla notes the original link structure may not be retained. |
| SingleFile HTML | One HTML file intended to contain the page’s resources. | The project’s format comparison says it can be viewed without an extension and without running JavaScript; check the particular saved page locally. |
| MHTML | A single-file archive format. | The project comparison indicates extension-free viewing in Chromium-based browsers and Internet Explorer. |
| Safari Webarchive | A single-file archive format. | The project comparison identifies extension-free viewing in Safari. |
| Self-extracting ZIP or HTML plus folder | Alternative ways to package page resources. | Choose these when extraction or separate resource files matter more than having one ordinary HTML document. |
The format compatibility notes above come from the SingleFile project’s comparison, not independent testing. Pick based on whether resources need to be embedded, where you will open the saved copy, and whether your goal is offline reading or preserving behavior.

Use the browser’s built-in save option
Firefox
Firefox’s save menu offers “Web page, HTML only” and “Web page, complete.” Choose HTML only if a single file matters more than pictures; choose complete if you want separate resource files alongside the page. Mozilla’s support article, last updated August 11, 2023, documents this distinction.
Chrome
Chrome Help documents this desktop path: More → More tools → Save page as, then choose a location and save. The help page does not specify a particular single-file output format, so do not assume that this route produces a resource-inclusive one-file archive.

For a screenshot or PDF snapshot rather than an HTML archive, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request API. It does not produce a standalone HTML file, so use SingleFile when you need an HTML archive. For a screenshot, the request below saves the result as WebP:
Recommended Free Tools
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Before a screenshot, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a saved HTML archive update when the live page changes?
No. It is a snapshot of what was captured; later changes to the website are not reflected in the saved file.
Can one HTML file archive every page linked from a website?
No. The described SingleFile workflow saves the current page or selected content, not a crawl of all outbound links.
